Term 3…it was busy!

Term 3, our penultimate term at Primary School, was a busy one!

In Mathematics we learned about measure. This involved us carrying out calculations to convert units of measure, read scales and accurately weigh items, measure distance and calculate capacity. We also learned how to measure area, volume and perimeter. We linked our learning to real life situations.

In Writing we needed to use our reading skills to gather information then write reports on animals in the rainforest. We also did some personal, reflective writing.

We started to learn about the rainforest and we will continue this at the start of term 4. So far we have learned where rainforests are and what the conditions are like, the tribe people who live there and the layers of a rainforest. We compared our lives to the tribe people.

Some of us have signed up to the Children’s University. This is a system that can be used to recognise our wider achievements. Several of us have volunteered to be ambassadors, which means we support younger pupils with their online passport as well as promoting Children’s University.

Some of us attended school camp at Dalguise. We had a great time, taking part in many activities we have never experienced before. Many of us conquered our biggest fears! Others stayed in school during camp week and took part in science experiments, cycled, baked and visited the High School several times.

We now have the small matter of our last ever time in Primary School. We have a trip to Amazonia to look forward to, our prom, graduation and our P6/7 School Show ‘Hairspray’.

Mandarin Lessons

Every Thursday afternoon P7 are lucky enough to have Miss Young come in and teach us Mandarin. This is a language which is spoken in China. She has been teaching us songs called ‘Looking for my friend’ and ‘Chinese Greetings’.  We have also been learning some Mandarin vocabulary. ‘ni hao!’ means hello. This Thursday we will be able to show what we have learned to our Chinese visitors.

P7 Girls Football Team

Our P7 Girls Football team have recently played in 2 tournaments with other Midlothian School teams. We are very proud of our girls, who battled very cold and rainy weather on both occasions. Their team spirit and perseverance helped them to win many games. They were such good sports and enjoyed the opportunity to practise their skills. We look forward to the next round of tournaments starting in March 2017.

P7 WWII Homestudy

This term P7 pupils have been asked to complete a home study on an aspect of World War II. After 5 weeks they will present their findings to their classmates. We will be spending 1 hour per week in school on this, as well as working on key listening and talking skills. Attached is the letter which was sent home on Friday.

Parent Partnerships

P7 would like to say a huge thank you to our parent helpers who have come in to support our reading. Mrs Neil, Mrs Sime, Mrs Doig and Mrs Kane have supported our learners by taking part in valuable dialogue linked to our reading books and this is appreciated by the teachers and our learners. We look forward to continuing to work with you.

Democracy Topic

During term 1, Primary 7 learned about Democracy. We learned about leadership styles, elections and voting, parties and their leaders and the Scottish Parliament. We also took part in House Captain Elections, as well as working in teams across P7 to establish our own political parties. We had to create an advertising campaign, manifestos and a catchy name. To consolidate our work we visited the Scottish Parliament last week. We were able to see a debate taking place, interview an MP and meet the Presiding Officer. We really enjoyed our day. Our next topic is World War II and we can’t wait to get started!
