Course Outline

The course consists of four compulsory units. These are summarised below, although for an exhaustive list of course content pupils should consult their class teacher or the SQA Course Specification.

Software Design and Development

In this unit you will be required to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • Data representation
  • Computer Architecture
  • Software Development Methodologies (Rapid Application and Agile methods inclusive)
  • Algorithm design and implementation with refinements and structure of SQA reference language for Higher.

Database Design and Development

In this unit you will be required to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

    • Database design and implementation

Web Design and Development

  • Website design and implementation

Computer Systems

  • The legal, security and environmental issues linked to Information and Computing systems.
  • The technical requirements for Software Systems

Assessment

The course involves a number of SQA assessments

  • Assignment (worth 30% of final award)
  • External exam (worth 70% of final award)

Both unit assessments must be passed before a pupil is presented for the SQA examination in this subject.
