BGE – 3rd Level, 4th Level

The BGE course focuses on the development of reading through the detailed study of appropriate texts, involving pupils in note-taking and the planning and writing of Critical Essays. Shorter texts are also used to refine Close Reading skills in preparation for Standardised Testing and National Qualification courses. Imaginative, Personal and Functional writing skills are developed in class and through homework tasks.  Underpinning success in this area is the need for technical accuracy. Pupils are also given opportunities for group discussion and Solo Talk. Private reading is particularly encouraged as a means of developing confidence and independence of thought.

National 4 – BBC Bitesize

The National 4 course aims to develop an understanding and competency in the four main skills in English: Reading, Writing, Listening and Talking. Through study of fiction and non-fiction texts, pupils will gain extensive skills in Understanding, Evaluation, Comparison and Analysis. All work is internally assessed.

National 5 – BBC Bitesize

The National 5 course is literature focused, with a specific element of the course concentrated on great works of Scottish writers. Pupils will study a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts to develop their analytical skills, and an appreciation of literature. Pupils will also gain extensive skills in Understanding, Evaluation, Comparison and Analysis.  They carry out close examination of texts, making reference to material they have studied earlier.  Pupils develop their ability to express themselves in a sophisticated fashion in a variety of forms.

Higher – BBC Bitesize

The Higher course immerses pupils in literature.  Pupils develop an understanding of the great works of writing in English – from various cultures – and be encouraged to study these independently.
Pupils gain extensive skills in Understanding, Evaluation, Comparison and Analysis.  They carry out close examination of texts, making reference to material they have studied earlier.  Pupils develop their ability to express themselves in a sophisticated fashion in a variety of forms.

Advanced Higher

The Advanced Higher course enables pupils to specialise in various areas of study.  Pupils are given the opportunity to closely study some of the great works of English literature. Pupils gain considerable ability in thinking and working independently, and develop the sophistication of their language and analytical skills.
