Young Leaders of Learning

What is the Young Leaders of Learning programme?
The Young Leaders of Learning programme was developed by Education Scotland to give children and young people an increasing say in their education and their schools. The programme supports the empowered system and also the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (articles 12 and 13).
At King’s Oak Primary, the Young Leaders of Learning programme has helped children from P5 and 6 to be more actively involved in helping to improve King’s Oak by:
- Creating a new school library for the whole school to use in the ICT suite.
- Ensured that all libraries in the school are welcoming and accessible to all children.
- Planning events to foster a culture of reading for enjoyment within the school.
- Leading different competitions throughout the school year to promote reading for enjoyment.
- Working towards set criteria to become a “Reading School”.
Presently, the committee is made up of eight children from P5 and 6 and is supported by Mrs Crerar. The committee meets every Friday and presently are looking at setting up a reading club at lunchtime, as well as thinking of ways to get children to read for enjoyment. All this work will help us work towards achieving reading school status.
