Why do slugs and snails need slime?
What you need
- Water
- Plastic tub and a teaspoon
- Cornflour
Try it!
Work in pairs. Complete your workbook as you do the experiment.
- Put 4 teaspoons of cornflour into the bowl. Add a little water bit by bit, stirring constantly until it gets ‘gloopy’ – you need to stir slowly.
- Gently tip the bowl from side to side to see what the mixture is like at ‘rest’.
- Move the spoon quickly through the mixture. Now move it slowly.
- Pick some up in your hands and squeeze hard, and then release.
- Experiment with the mixture in other ways, tap it prod it…
Put the mixture into the bin.
- Repeat the steps above with water instead of cornflour.
Now wash your hands!
