Post you answers below………..

  1. Discussions initially included the difference between natural and artificial materials and choosing suitable materials for different things e.g. being waterproof. We discovered that materials are made of very small particles called atoms containing neutrons, protons and electrons. All ‘stuff’ in everyday life is called a ‘material’ because it takes up space, even water and air. Further work would be focused on chemical changes and a deeper look at properties of materials and classification of solids, liquid and gases!

  2. Don’t forget to share any examples or resources from future lessons on chemical changes. The question seems to have sparked some interesting discussions which have led to a possible responsive approach to the next steps in learning.

  3. You can read the “Big ideas” section to check your answer Mrs Lightfoot. Thanks for replying – now to answer November’s question!

  4. I have posted this for my P4 class this week and it has sparked lots of interesting discussion. The children have initially written what they think the answer is on a post-it. They have been allowed a few days to change or add to or read each others comments before we reveal the answer on Friday. The children have been really enthused by this and can’t wait for Friday.

  5. What a fantastic idea – delighted the question has sparked lots of discussion. Would love if you could take a picture of the post -it notes and your science mentor could upload it onto our blog site.

  6. I’ve been doing a bit of reading as I wasn’t 100% sure of this answer myself. I’m becoming more and more intrigued about all the new research emerging about dark matter. A bit too advanced for my class at this stage but it would be a brilliant discussion topic for older classes.

    1. Glad that the question managed to provoke some extra reading. It’s good to raise the profile and thinking behind these “Big ideas” in science.

  7. Materials in the universe are made up of very small particles! Had a look at the helpful facts on the big idea page! Very helpful!

  8. Good to see a new focus in Science for the primary school. Although teaching this at primary one would be difficult I think they would understand that the world is madeupof very small particles. Very basic but enough for primary 1.
