‘Action at a distance’ is a term used most often in the context of early theories of gravity and electromagnetism to describe how an object responds to the influence of distant objects. For example, Coulomb’s law and the law of universal gravitation are such early theories.

I had a chat about some interesting every day uses of magnets with my class. Here are some of the coolest that we could find ….
1. When vets want to remove metal objects out of an animals stomach.
2. When scrap yard operators want to lift heavy objects like cars and fridges.
3. When ships are navigating through the sea, they can use magnets.
4. When rollercoasters want to slow down.
5. Some magicians use magnets to trick people.
Wow – that is a cool list of uses for magnets. Well done to the class for coming up with those ideas.
When researching this area, I found out about the ‘field of force’ between objects like magnets. Also light can be seen from the sun which has travelled from far away, and light bulbs or a flame which is close by. The light is then detected when it reaches our eyes. Another area you could explore is gravity (objects affecting other objects without touching them) e.g. making things fall to earth!
From the top of my head magnets, and when your hair is static with a balloon! Will definitely see what the class can come up with for this question.
Whilst finding out about the Sun, Moon and Stars they children showed an understanding of how they can see light in their eyes from the sun which is far away and how the sun can burn you even though it is so far away.
