Although it is important to identify where we are now, it is not enough to stop there. We need to reflect upon how we can develop the skills where we are less confident and how we can transfer the skills in which we are confident and competent.

Complete the audit below, using the information from the table above.

Part B – Activity 1

Recognition/ Reflection Action
What helps my learning? How can I utilise this?
Example: “Discussing the topic with others” ·         Set up a study group of like-minded peers·         Engage with the online community
Reading my work aloud Doing this on a regular basis and possibly having people read things out to me?
Having someone spell/grammar check my work Set up a group with peers to do this regularly
Having regular breaks to think about what I’ve read make time for lunch and dinner and reflect on reading then
Re writing lecture and tutorial notes Have notebooks prepared and ready for me to rewrite the note as often as I like

Recognition/Reflection Action
What hinders my learning? How can I address this factor?
Example: “I’m easily distracted” ·         Study in a place where distractions are minimal·         Read lecture notes before the lecture and then take notes lectures to keep me focused
Noise in the background Going to the library to study in the quiet areas or putting earplugs in
Not organised Write a list of things that need to be done in order to not miss anything out?
Not understanding what to do Ask a lecturer or teacher questions before it’s too late and I’ve failed
Not getting enough sleep Being tired stops me taking in as much information as I need so I have to make sure I get a good nights sleep

My Placement Goals

I have many goals as a student teacher which I would like to complete during my first placement practice. My main one has to be behavior management.

Know how and when to seek the advice of colleagues in managing behavior.

I have always felt that I need more training in how to effectively carry out behavior management. I feel that giving positive praise is something that I can do but I need new and fresh ideas on how to carry this out and not sound patronizing towards children. I also want to learn techniques for dealing with negative behavior in the classroom which, even having experience working in a nursery, I personally feel that I do need more to be an effective practitioner.

Plan appropriately for effective teaching and in order to meet the needs of all learners, including learning in literacy, numeracy, health and well being and skills for learning, life and work.

I want to learn how to do lesson plans in a classroom setting. Planning and time management per class is something I need practice with so feel that this would be a very relevant goal because I will have to use lesson plans on a daily basis as a primary teacher.

develop tasks and set pace of work to meet the needs of learners, providing effective support and challenge, seeking advice appropriately

Something I feel nervous about is taking a whole class of older than nursery aged pupils. I think having experience with this will be a huge responsibility and because of my reservations about it, has to be one of my 3 goals. I’m really looking forward to placement and working on these 3 goals to become an effective practitioner.
