We have been embedding the UNCRC into everyday practice in the centre. Do you feel your child has developed their understanding of their rights? If yes, how do they show this/share their knowledge?
“Yes definitely. P will frequently talk about her rights, especially her right to decide or choose in certain situations”.
“Yes. He is always keen to share what rights he has been learning about. He has particularly enjoyed Abigail having a list of activities that each child has chosen to do at group time. He enjoys coming home and telling us what his friends have chosen and why they like it”.
“They have great understanding of their rights and they show me this by playing together safely outside, helping me in the kitchen prepare healthy and nutritious food. They love to read their books and have access to their crafts which they look after with respect. They also let me know if they wish to be involved in decision making and let me know if I’m doing something that makes them feel they aren’t able to advocate for themselves”
“Absolutely, they have a deeper understanding of their rights from their experiences within the centre. They know when they’re not being respected , what is fair/unfair, how to show respect to others during play & other social situations. They have a strong sense of agency of which the everyday practices in the centre have undoubtedly contributed towards developing. Since starting at Largs Early Years, his sense of belonging & identity also developed further”.
Family engagement is a key aspect of our centre. We strive to offer a variety of experiences to support this e.g. workshops, stay and play, beach clean, multi agency support groups – NEST etc. Have you taken part in any activities and what impact have they had on you and your child?
“Yes, I have taken part in various activities. They’ve had a positive impact on us both as it helps enable there to be crossovers between home & the early years centre in terms of the topics discussed and skill development leading up to starting primary school. Moreover, my child is very receptive to me participating in such experiences, I feel it contributes positively to his overall experience in early years, he always has as sense of joy in sharing a par of his world with me”.
“I participated in the numeracy workshop and found this really helpful in terms of giving me more ideas for play based games to enhance learning. As well as learning the correct terminology to use”.
“We’ve been fortunate to join Stay and Play which has been great! I love that my child is given ownership to share the playroom and show where she loves. We’d love to join more but we work and its difficult to get away. I think the variety of workshops is really good and staff are eager to have you join sessions. They provide timeous reminders of upcoming sessions”.
“Yes – I will always try my best to attend all events where possible as I find they give great insight into how she is learning, what type of activities she is exposed to etc. and most importantly how are home this can be supported/encourage etc also.”
“We took part in the beach clean which highlighted taking responsibility for their actions and impact on the environment. They learned the concept of volunteering and how their individual actions can contribute to the greater good”.
The aim of the curriculum is to develop Successful Learners, Effective Contributors, Confident Individuals and Responsible Citizens. Do you feel experiences offered at LEYC contribute and support these characteristics in your child? Can you give any examples?
“My daughter is provided with a wide variety of learning experiences which she can engage with to develop the four capacities. Personalisation and choice are at the forefront of the experiences provided by staff. Abigail, in particular knows our daughter’s interests and uses this to motivate her to engage with activities whist challenge her to interact with new learning”.
“She has been exploring using her voice and being confident in situations involving strangers”.
“Yes. Has become more engaged in learning. Loves helping at home and has much more confidence making friends. She is able to take her own initiative to do stuff at home and has become extremely independent”.
“My child is more independent and will do things for himself that I used to always do for him. He is making friends and understands about sharing and being kind. He is more confident speaking since starting nursery and is growing in confidence at leaving his family members to go to nursery each day. This is down to the work of all LEYC workers but his keyworker in particular is amazing and allows him to grow whilst being nurtured. Through allowing children to help at meal times, STEM pay and messy art children are getting amazing experiences every day”.
“Yes. He can tell me about his responsibility to the planet and being eco conscious/friendly. He has successfully engaged in activities designed to help him achieve his milestones and progress. His growing confidence is encouraged and celebrated using the proud cloud”.
“Yes to all. The variety of activities available for the children to participate in aid their learning, my son thrives with the play-based approach in which the activities are delivered. He is often the helper during group time & contributes regularly in group activities. Activities such as the beach clean really helped to solidify the concept of being a responsible citizen”.
We pride ourselves on being an inclusive setting where every child feels valued and respected. We use a range of strategies to reduce barriers to learning and promote communication e.g. Makaton, Communication group, targeted small groups. Does your child benefit from accessing using any of these?
“Currently not applicable to us personally however, these opportunities are communicated well by the nursery and T does enjoy the Makaton despite having good communication personally. I do feel this is great though as always her to learn different communication techniques so she can connect with all her peers and start understanding everyone is unique”.
“My daughter loves using Makaton. She has become more aware of everyone’s needs since joining LEYC and I am delighted with the way she sees each child’s individuality. She is encouraged to be inclusive”.
“He doesn’t directly require such strategies, however, he is aware of them & I feel it is benefited him in understanding diversity & inclusivity”.
“I think P has benefited a lot from exposure to these sorts of strategies, even if she hasn’t necessarily needed them in a targeted way. It is good for her to see that everyone is different, with different needs and different ways of communication, to help her understand how important being inclusive and understanding of others is”.
