The children worked together to create one big ocean to celebrate ‘Oceans Day’. We spoke about what it means to have a clean ocean and why this is important. The children used a variety of resources and materials to create their ocean design.

To begin our morning staff welcomed families to the event. Staff were giving out free dog poo bags to the community. Julie read the story ‘The Life of a Little Plastic Bottle’ before we all headed out onto the beach to begin our clean up mission. Throughout the morning ‘Cycling Without Age’ provided rides along the sea front. Beat the Street provided a bonus beat box for our event and the children loved receiving some goodies during the event. To end the morning children selected a piece of fruit from our donation basket from Morrisons and also visited Beachcombers to receive a free ice cream for all their hard work 😃.
We would like to thank all our families who came out this morning to support us with our beach clean – what a wonderful turnout it was.
We would also like to extend our thanks to:
🌟 Cycling Without Age for coming and providing free rides along the prom for our children.
🌟 Morrisons in Largs for providing free fruit for all the children.
🌟Beachcombers Largs for kindly donating a free ice cream to each of our nursery children.
🌟 Streetscene who provided us with litter pickers, bags and vests.
🌟Beat the Street Active Nation representatives who came out and kindly brought lots of freebies for the children as well as raffle prizes.
🌟 Councillor Alan David Hill for coming along to support our beach clean.
All the support is very much appreciated. A special thanks and well done to all our children for working so hard this morning to make sure our Largs beach is clean and safe ♻️.
Team LEYC 🌈
Throughout the month of April the children were learning about:
Health and Well-Being – Healthy foods, what foods come from animals and which from plants, life cycles, what plants need to grow and survive.
Numeracy and Mathematics – Using measuring language.
Literacy and English – Using props to retell parts of a story.
Largs EYC is excited to join in a 6 week exercise challenge across North Ayrshire. Gaining points by walking, running, cycling, wheeling and scooting to different beat boxes across the town. Let’s get moving 😃.

Our new story of the month is ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. The children voted for this at home using an online poll vote. Last week we had our caterpillars arrive and we are excited to watch their growth and learn about life cycles.
Throughout the month of April we had a focus on ‘Earth Day’ linking with the UNCRC Articles 6 ‘The right to life, survival and development’ and 24 ‘The right to food, water, health and environment’.
Some experiences we carried out to support this were:
Abigail’s dad Donald kindly donated 100+ lettuce plants to Largs EYC families to grow at home.
Over the last 4 weeks our planning within the room has focused on the following outcomes:
Health and Well-being – I am aware of and able to express my feelings and I am developing the ability to talk about them. I am learning ways to manage my emotions.
Numeracy and Mathematics – I can match objects and sort using my own and others criteria.
I can share out a group of objects and can split a whole object into smaller parts.
Literacy and English – I describe an object/picture using suitable vocabulary/ I know the difference between numbers and letters/I explore letter sounds.
Here are some experiences the children have been joining in with to support their learning:
Today we had a very special visit from the ‘Cycling Without Age’ team. The children each had a turn on Gordon’s three-wheel cycle with a passenger cab at the front that is motor assisted. Gordon made this a fun experience shouting out directions, going fast then slow as well as asking the children to shout ‘stop’ and the ‘go’ when they were ready.
The Cycling Without Age team help people to get out into nature and regain social connection. Their work also helps to build bridges between generations and reinforces trust, respect and community. The volunteers and passengers alike enjoy the physical and emotional well-being benefits.
