Here are some ways we explored our story of the month:

Children and their families have voted ‘Room on the Broom’ as our new story of the month in the 3-5 room. Check out the results below 🙂

🍁Adventure in the woods🍁
This morning we had a lovely walk to the woods to collect some autumn treasures. We used a checklist to see what woodland wonders we could find, all of the children were able to find leaves and we all enjoyed watching them fall off of trees.
During our scavenger hunt we came across a QR code, after scanning the code we were provided with information on taking notice of your surroundings and ‘grounding’ yourself. This was supported by SAMH (Scottish Action for Mental Health) Most of the children were able to answer and identify at least one sight, sound or smell within the woods. This experience gave us time and space to think about our surroundings, gather thoughts and create a calming environment.
Working in line with our story of the month, we set up an experience for the children to sit on a log just like the broomstick, and listen to our story of the month “Room on the Broom”, some of the children joined in and finished some of the sentences and identified which item the witch would lose.

As today is world mental health day 😀 we have been discussing different strategies that can clear your mind. We explored different types of exercise such as bike rides, climbing, running and some children went out on a wellbeing walk. We have also used digital technology to encourage physical activities such as dancing and yoga. By exploring these different methods gives children more of an understanding about how important mental health is, which supports our UNCRC monthly focus. This also links in with our Eco monthly focus on transport emissions, where children are aware of alternative ways to travel to nursery or school.

🟢🚶🏻♂️➡️Beat the Street🚶🏻♀️🟢
We took part in North Ayrshire’s Beat the Street back in May. We were lucky enough to win some amazing vouchers after coming 1st on the total points leaderboard with 51,640 points and 3rd on the average points leaderboard ⭐️
Over the last week we have been consulting with the children on how to spend our vouchers for Decathlon & Scotia Books. Using the iPads to look at the websites and creating a mind map, lots of the children were able to have their say on what they thought we should buy. We are excited to be ordering new bike helmets, footballs and goals from Decathlon ⚽️🚴🏻♀️ The children also chose their favourite ‘Orchard Toys’ games from Scotia Books and these have been ordered as well ❤️
A big thank you once again to everyone that took part and joined in with ‘Beat the Street’ to allow us to win these fabulous vouchers! You can also see our winning certificates and trophy displayed in the cabinet within the corridor 🏆
Team Largs EYC x

Our new Story of the Month is ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’, this was the clear winner from our voting form sent out to our families. We look forward to implementing some activities linked to the story throughout March/April.
Some of the children created their own ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ set up yesterday. The children asked for this again today, so we created another area and provided the children with dressing up items so they could perform their own dances to the judging panel and audience. The children were provided with paper or a whiteboard and pens to write their score of the performances. All children were great at applauding the performances and joining in with clapping throughout the performance 🤩.
Well Done Everyone 👏
🟠 Expressive Arts 0-02a – I have experienced the energy and excitement of performing in front of an audience.
🟠 Expressive Arts 0-10a – I have opportunities to enjoy taking part in dance experiences .
UNCRC:
Article 24 – I have the right to be as healthy as possible. (Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week – I can say thank you and support my friends for their talents)
Article 29 – I have the right to an education which develops my personality, talents and abilities.

For the month of January our UNCRC focus has been ‘Online Safety Awareness’ linking with Articles 19 – The right to be protected from harm, Article 17 – The right to reliable information and Article 34 – Protection from exploitation. Here is some activities the children have joined in to learn about their rights.
Following on from the children’s idea in our STEM floorbook to learn animal names, an area was set up to provide the children with opportunities to explore and learn animal names. There was zoo maps, question and answer books, the promethean board displayed videos about animals and how to look after them. The children gathered their own resources to build on the safari map.
To continue with the children’s interests we created our own zoo maps using some ideas from zoo maps around the world we had displayed on the table. The children started by drawing the outline of their zoo and paths by drawing lines, squiggles and waves. Some extended their zoo by drawing grass and water areas. To add the animals to their drawing, the children learned how to navigate the different functions of the app. Following the steps press ‘T’ on the page , ‘Smiley face’ on the keyboard and then ‘bear’ icon for all the animal emojis to be displayed. The more the action was repeated, the more the children were able to do this independently. We spoke about the zoos we’ve visited before and our favourite animals.

Thank you to our 3-5 families for joining in with our ‘Story of the Month’ vote. Stick Man is the winner :)!.
