UNCRC April – Earth Day

Throughout the month of April we had a focus on ‘Earth Day’ linking with the UNCRC Articles 6 ‘The right to life, survival and development’ and 24 ‘The right to food, water, health and environment’.

Some experiences we carried out to support this were:

  • Paperless Play – Using the iPads to create digital artwork, drawing on recycled materials such as a cardboard box or old artwork. We also used the paper bags our lunch came in, to design our own bags to use at home. Using cut outs from magazines instead of printing out pictures.
  • Community Posters – To raise awareness of Earth Day, some children created posters to display around the town using recycled materials. * Thanks to the following businesses and shops for letting us display these posters – Costa Largs, Haylie Stores, Samantha Kennedy Florist, David Gavins and All Hands On Earth.
  • Captured Creatures – To gain perspective of the impact litter has to life under the sea, we created a station filled with rubbish with sea creatures trapped inside. The children were then tasked to free the creatures and discuss why it’s important to put rubbish in the bin.
  • Litter Pick – The children went on a litter pick adventure around the garden and campus to clean these areas free of rubbish.

Cycling Without Age

Today we had a very special visit from the ‘Cycling Without Age’ team. The children each had a turn on Gordon’s three-wheel cycle with a passenger cab at the front that is motor assisted. Gordon made this a fun experience shouting out directions, going fast then slow as well as asking the children to shout ‘stop’ and the ‘go’ when they were ready.

The Cycling Without Age team help people to get out into nature and regain social connection. Their work also helps to build bridges between generations and reinforces trust, respect and community. The volunteers and passengers alike enjoy the physical and emotional well-being benefits.

Football Sessions with Morton

Children who attend a Friday afternoon have just completed a 6 week block of football lessons with Shaun from  Greenock Morton Football Club Community Arm. The children have learnt some different skills such as dribbling, catching and learning to stop a ball with their foot. The children really engaged with these sessions and thought Shaun was quite funny. The children were delighted to receive a certificate at the end of the block.

Morton run a football club/sessions called ‘Micro Morton’ aimed at 2-5 year olds. For more information or if your interested in signing your child up click the link: https://www.myclub-hub.com/organisations/277/hosted/programmes/1926

Potato Planting

This week Donald (Abigail’s dad) visited the nursery to help her group prepare to grow their own potatoes. Donald spoke about how planting 1 potato (tubers) can grow up to 4 potatoes and can go towards a meal for your family. Children had their own individual bag to add soil and 3 potatoes each to grow all provided by Donald. We were learning that we need to face the potatoes with the ‘eyes’ (sprouts) facing up so that they will grow properly.  Donald also worked with some of the children to plant potatoes in our nursery garden bed. The children enjoyed using the trowels to cover the potatoes they had planted with lots of soil.

Let’s hope we have a successful batch!

Childsmile

This morning, Lisa from Childsmile came in to visit and we showed her how good we all were at brushing our teeth at nursery ⭐️ Lisa brought along her friend – Elliot the dragon 🐉 who also showed us how he brushes his teeth…they are lovely and shiny ✨
