On Monday 28th November, the annual St Andrew’s Day debating championship will be held in the Scottish Parliament with students and senior pupils from universities and schools across Scotland competing in debating heats covering a range of issues important in today’s society. The Final will take place in the Debating Chamber chaired by the Presiding Officer with the opportunity to win the specially engraved Scottish Parliament Quaich. This year, for the first time, all schools across the country will be able to follow the progress of the competition on Glow throughout the day and then watch the final, streamed live on Glow TV. This is an exciting opportunity for pupils to get involved in a high quality debate and to learn more about debating.

The conference was a great success and this was greatly reflected in the delegates comments. The conference presentations from Ms Lean Mann, Scottish Government, Professor John Frank, Scottish Collaboration for Public Health Research and Policy and Dr Margy Whalley, Director at Pen Green Research Development & Training Base and Leadership Centre are all in the ‘conferences’ section of the Early Years National Glow Group.

Following on from the successful times table event last year Tom Renwick (Maths on Track) returns this time to Glow TV to do a fractions lesson at Curriculum for Excellence level 2.
Working with a P7 class in Kinnaird Primary School, Falkirk (though suitable for P6 or S1/2) Tom will use the effective combination of the visual 100+ board and interactive Wee Red Box flash cards which promote ‘working memory’ and ‘processing speed’. However it is not necessary for you to have this equipment in your classroom, you can always make the flashcards yourself.
There will be a short break during the event, to allow you to replicate the flash card techniques with your own class, then re-joining Tom a few minutes later to see further techniques which enhance fluency (the list of 12 flash cards you’ll require can be found on the Glow TV schedule listing). It should be fun!
Over two Mondays in November and December, The L.A.B will work with you to make your own radio programme or podcast – on a sporting theme. We’ll be hosting two workshops in The L.A.B at BBC Scotland, and you can join in from your classroom. In the first workshop, you’ll be working with us to record an interview with a special guest, plus idents for your programme. And in the second workshop we want you to record an event at your own school. By the end you’ll have made your own sporting podcast. Where possible, we’ll publish your finished work on The L.A.B’s website.There is still time to sign up for the already very successful Glovember Glow TV author events.

The East Ayrshire Imprint Book Festival schools programme was watched by just under 3500 pupils from around Scotland on GlowTV. Pupils from schools in Dumfries and Galloway to Orkney logged on to Glow to see and hear the authors. There were also many East Ayrshire schools joining these events on Glow as well as pupils from local schools attending the Burns Monument Centre in Kilmarnock in person. Glow teamed up with east Ayrshire’s Imprint Book Festival to make the 5 author sessions with Lynne Rickards, Scott McIntyre, Simon Puttock, Barry Hutchison and Tony Bonning part of Glovember, Glow’s national writing competition taking place throughout the month of November.
This was an excellent example of partnership working between Education and Library Services in East Ayrshire, and the national Glow team, to provide events to schools that promote and encourage literacy and reading. At the Imprint Festival finale on Saturday, Councillor Douglas Reid highlighted the input of Glow as one of the successes of the festival.

Scottish Stem Cell Network (SSCN) have been running a series of interactive workshops on the topic of Stem Cell aimed at S5 Higher Human Biology/ Higher Biology classes since the summer and two new ones have now been scheduled.
The workshops are delivered live by scientists enhancing the class room experience and providing a unique opportunity to explore science as a career.
Resources address key objectives by setting up scenarios to encourage interdisciplinary learning specifically addressing areas of Science, RMPS together with issues from Health and Wellbeing. The resources are designed to develop skills in group work within and across schools and critical analysis skills where the students will be assessing the moral and ethical issues associated with scientific advancements based on factual information validated and delivered by experts in the field.
The workshops are lead by a stem cell scientist, making use of a mix of presentations, interactive quizzes, video and web based activities and cover:
• A basic introduction into stem cells, the science.
• How can we use Stem Cells
• What does the future hold
• The Ethical questions
• Careers in the Stem Cell Industry
The two new sessions are identical in content but are on different days and times to hopefully suit the S5 timetable in your school.

The new two-day web event is set to deliver a packed programme of entertainment and information to pupils in Primary 7 through to S6 on substance misuse issues and making positive lifestyle decisions.
The programme, which is funded by the Scottish Government has been developed by the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency in collaboration with a number of partners, and will help schools deliver second, third and fourth level substance misuse experiences and outcomes within health and wellbeing.
Appearances will include music from The Wanted, Carrie Mac, Finding Albert, Little Eye, Pearl and The Puppets, boy band GMD 3, Emeli Sande and real life stories aimed at the specific age groups. Drama from PACE media productions group and positive role models.

This week Scottish athlete Lee McConnell, 400 metres runner will be on Glowing Thursday to tell us about what it takes to be an Olympian and to encourage schools to get involved in National School Sports Week 2012.
Nearly half a million primary and secondary pupils from over 1,400 schools in Scotland participated in National School Sport Week last June, making it the biggest school sporting event in the country. So, the numbers for 2012 are set to rise!
The week will be from 11th – 15th June 2012 and the theme for this year is Stage your Games! The possibilities for capturing the Olympic and Paralympic spirit in your National School Sports Week events and for supporting interdisciplinary learning in Curriculum for Excellence are endless.

During their first year at primary school, all children in Scotland will receive a free book with a message from Bookbug.
This year’s chosen book, ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ by Julia Donaldson, won in the 0-7 age category of the 2011 Royal Mail Awards for Scottish Children’s Books. Thousands of children voted in this age group, so we are pleased to be gifting a book that really was their choice.
This Glow Meet will explore the book ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ including gifting ideas and fun activities that students and teachers can plan at school or in their classroom. The official gifting week is the week beginning November 21.
The session will be presented by Tracy Lowe from the Scottish Book Trust who is a regular Glow Meet presenter, her enthusiasm and love for books is clearly demonstrated in her presentations!

Shared Responsibility is a Colombian Government Initiative that focuses on making individuals think about the impact of drug misuse, demand and production in communities within Colombia and abroad.
On Tuesday the 1st of November the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh will host an event co-organized with the Colombian Embassy and the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency.
Professor Brigitte Baptiste, the Director of the Von Humboldt Institute that is Colombia’s largest environmental organization, will give a talk on the impact of the drugs trade on the environment and society in Colombia.
This will be followed by a group discussion in which members of the audience and external viewers can ask questions to the speaker, embassy officials, the police, biodiversity researchers and anthropologists.

Choices for Life is now an online event taking place on 14th and 15th November 2011. Practitioners working with children and young people are asked to log on to Glow to access a number of interactive workshops and thought provoking dramas.
Choices for Life supports learners to develop their understanding of the use and misuse of a variety of substances including alcohol, drugs and tobacco. Curriculum for Excellence coverage includes second, third and fourth level substance misuse experiences and outcomes within health and wellbeing.
This online event encourages an interdisciplinary approach in a key area of the health and wellbeing framework. Young people will engage in a number of interactive activities which allow them to explore and develop their understanding of the impact of risk-taking behaviour on life chances.

Once again Glowing Thursdays is delighted to welcome back The Place2Be. This time there will be an opportunity for pupils and school staff to listen to Edinburgh pupils’ views on how The Place2Be and other strategies (such as circle times, mentoring, and talking to friends) helps them cope with the worries in their lives so they can get the most out of their education.
Hosted by The Place2Be, (a school based counselling service providing support to over 58,000 children), in partnership with Enquire, the Scottish Advice Service for Additional Support for Learning.

This is a rare opportunity to hear the current national poet talk about her writing and in particular the modern Scottish classic, ‘Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off.’ Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off is a co-production between the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh and Dundee Rep Theatre. The inaugural session will take place from 3.30-5.00pm on Wednesday 26th October. The theme for the first 45 minutes of this session will be A Games Legacy for Scotland and will showcase how the London Olympics 2012 and Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 can be used to create exciting learning opportunities for global citizenship activities and interdisciplinary learning. This Glow Meet demonstrated a way to provide CPD support to deliver the aspects of Health and Wellbeing that are the Responsibility of All. It was a poplar Glow meet with an very encouraging 78 people joining in.
They heard about and discussed the Iceberg Model for shared understanding of Responsibility of All. The Iceberg model helps to mark crucial learning experiences with added activities. This may support teachers identify the appropriate starting points based on a learner’s prior knowledge. This potential pathway can help teachers to consider the gathering of evidence of ‘how much and how well’ a learner has learned, when considering assessment in aspects of HWB. World Porridge Day on Monday 10th October will see the celebration of a traditional Scottish dish and the chance to explore the work of the charity Mary’s Meals.
To many in the UK, porridge is a hearty breakfast, but to over 479,000 school children in Malawi who receive a daily mug of maize-based likuni phala from Mary’s Meals, it is a powerful incentive to go to school, and the only guaranteed meal they will have each day. Mary’s Meals provides a daily meal to chronically hungry children to attract them to school where they can get an education which could lift them out of poverty in later life. It costs Mary’s Meals just £6.15 to provide a daily meal for a child for a whole school year.
200 S1 pupils in Holyrood Secondary School Glasgow will be served porridge at the same time as pupils at the Catholic Institute Primary School in Malawi with a live link via Glow. There will also be a competition for young people to write their own stories. These will be judged by authors in 3 sections of early primary, later primary and secondary, with prizes for the winners and runners up including having your story published with the other winning entries in an eBook.

At the Scottish Learning Festival Tim Laver, PT of History and Modern Studies at Bishopbriggs Academy, explained how the PS3 Little Big Planet 2 game could be used to further engage pupils in their learning. The hugely popular game, which has millions of users worldwide, can be used by pupils and teachers to create their own games with a variety of levels.

Our first School’s Channel broadcast is coming live from Braehead Primary School in West Dunbartonshire. Headteacher Joanne Paton contacted us through Glow and now her pupils will be taking centre stage on Glow TV for a National Event.
Join us as the candidates for the Braehead Primary Pupil Council for 2011-2012 will be rounding off their election campaigns with their own election broadcasts outlining why they should be elected to the Pupil Council.
Watch the broadcasts and then have your own vote in school. You will be able to ask the candidates questions yourselves too! Find out the winners by logging on to the Braehead Primary website after the final vote on Tuesday 13th September.

You may be interested in joining this Glow Meet with Kenneth Muir, HM Chief Inspector of Education from Education Scotland to find out more about this topic. He will present on three key areas under the theme of self-evaluation that will help to support the implementation of Curriculum for Excellence. The three areas are:
• Self-evaluation questions to support implementation
• Self-evaluation within the new inspection model
• Inspection advice note (Aug 2011) – further guidance on the implementation of progress with Curriculum for Excellence.
The main focus of Kenneth’s input will be to provide practical advice on the role of self-evaluation in implementing Curriculum for Excellence. He will also set out the expectations of HM Inspectors which are based firmly on the national implementation timetable and expectations endorsed by the Curriculum for Excellence Management Board. There will be a number of opportunities for discussion both during Kenneth’s presentation and following it.
This Glow Meet CPD opportunity will be relevant for all of those interesting in exploring the topic of self-evaluation. There will be two sessions on 8 Sept:

Christine De Luca reads ‘Dodie’s Phenomenal Pheesic’ to a class at Sound Primary School, broadcasted live via Glow Meet 
On Monday 5th September 2011 at 11:15am Christine De Luca will be in Sound Primary School, Lerwick, reading to a P5 class, from her Shetland dialect translation of Roald Dahl.
Roald Dahl’s famous children’s book ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ contains such a wealth of charming situations, characters, and imaginative language that it stood out as a perfect opportunity for translation into Shetland dialect. Christine De Luca, an admired writer in Shetland, Scotland and beyond, took Roald Dahl’s classic and created a fantastic new version which keeps the story and spirit of the original but tells it in Shetland dialect with Shetland characters.
The dialect of Shetland, like so many of the dialects of Scotland, has unique features but also similarities with its neighbouring Scots languages. Christine De Luca is well-known for her talented use of Shetland dialect in her poetry and children’s stories and is an experienced, expressive reader.
The Creative Links team at Shetland Islands Council’s would like to share this reading with as many other schools as possible so are broadcasting the event live via Glow. After the reading the author will answer questions from children in the class – and also any that come in from viewing schools.

This conversation builds on the Commissioner’s 2010 national consultation with Scotland’s school aged children called a RIGHT blether. Over 74,000 children and young people took part in a RIGHT blether through creative projects, educational workshops, Tam’s Tour and a national vote. The outcomes influenced the Commissioner’s work plan directly in four key areas: Where I Live, Where I Learn, My Community and, The Country I live in – Scotland.
