Using Glow for learning, teaching and assessment

On Friday I visited a cluster of primary schools in Fife to present to them how they might use Glow for learning, teaching and assessment. This was part of an in-service day dedicated to looking at how Glow was used and could be used in their schools. It was great to work with such an enthusiastic group of practitioners.

I started off the presentation with an overview which you can find here. (Glow log in required)

Then I showed some examples of how I have used Glow for learning, teaching and assessment which you can find in the following cookbooks:

Did you know that you can use Glow in your playroom or classroom? Here are some ideas:

  1. Add a video of them exploring an interest
  2. Add colourful pictures from the Early Years illustrations page
  3. Keep parents and carers up to date by creating a blog, they can access it without a Glow password and you can add videos and sound!

Interests this month might include:

Children In Need

National Tree Week

St Andrew’s Day

Or, why not create a Christmas page? You will have more time to create it and you could have a Glow meet with Santa!

For more inspiration visit ‘Places to Go’ and see some excellent examples from Glow Cookbooks.

If you are unsure or want to discuss what you have created, share your thoughts on our Glow forum and other early years practitioners can give you ideas and use your ideas too!

Happy Glowing!

Imprint Book Festival & Glovember

The East Ayrshire Imprint Book Festival schools programme was watched by just under 3500 pupils from around Scotland on GlowTV. Pupils from schools in Dumfries and Galloway to Orkney logged on to Glow to see and hear the authors. There were also many East Ayrshire schools joining these events on Glow as well as pupils from local schools attending the Burns Monument Centre in Kilmarnock in person. Glow teamed up with east Ayrshire’s Imprint Book Festival to make the 5 author sessions with Lynne Rickards, Scott McIntyre, Simon Puttock, Barry Hutchison and Tony Bonning part of Glovember, Glow’s national writing competition taking place throughout the month of November.

This was an excellent example of partnership working between Education and Library Services in East Ayrshire, and the national Glow team, to provide events to schools that promote and encourage literacy and reading. At the Imprint Festival finale on Saturday, Councillor Douglas Reid highlighted the input of Glow as one of the successes of the festival.

Technologies at Glasgow Uni

Yesterday (14/11/11), I visited Glasgow University to present to BEd years 3 and 4. We began by discussing the misconceptions surrounding Technologies within Curriculum for Excellence, and spent the rest of the time looking at draft level 2 learning journeys for STEM Central. The students commented on how easy it was to use the website and learning journeys in order to make lessons.

You can find the presentation here. (Glow log in required)

We ended by looking at some of the other resources available from Education Scotland to help with teaching Technologies:

Glow Myths

Cross post from the Glow Scotland Blog.

Every year a survey is made of all Glow users to find out what they think of Glow.

Along with many other findings in this years report, it became clear that there was a need for clarification on some elements of the functionality as Glow was perceived not to do things which it does in fact do.

We hope you find this Glow Help blog post helpful.

Using Glow to support the revision of Standard Grade Biology

Dual post from Glow Scotland Blog.

Karen Maitland is a teacher of Biology at Queensferry High School in Edinburgh. Karen is an advocate of the use of technology aimed at enhancing the learning and teaching process. In this cookbook Karen will talk us through how she uses Glow to support the learning and teaching of Standard Grade Biology.

Through the appropriate use of technology in class, Karen has aimed to enhance the experience of her pupils during their time in the Biology Department. Through various websites and podcasts, Karen looks to provide her pupils with the opportunity to access advice, information and resources out with the barriers of the traditional school day.

With the introduction of Glow to Queensferry HS, Karen was keen to investigate how best to use the tools and functionality to further enrich the learning experiences of her pupils. In this cookbook, we will hear Karen outline how she has created a Glow Group to act as a one-stop-shop revision source for her Standard Grade Biology class.

Iceberg Glow Meet – Responsbility of All

This Glow meet took place on Wednesday 28 September 16.15-17.00 – to watch again click here.

This Glow Meet demonstrated a way to provide CPD support to deliver the aspects of Health and Wellbeing that are the Responsibility of All. It was a poplar Glow meet with  an very encouraging 78 people joining in.

They heard about and discussed the Iceberg Model for shared understanding of Responsibility of All.   The Iceberg model helps to mark crucial learning experiences with added activities.    This may support teachers identify the appropriate starting points based on a learner’s prior knowledge.  This potential pathway can help teachers to consider the gathering of evidence of ‘how much and how well’ a learner has learned, when considering assessment in aspects of HWB.   For more information contact Suzanne Hargreaves.

World Porridge Day

World Porridge Day on Monday 10th October will see the celebration of a traditional Scottish dish and the chance to explore the work of the charity Mary’s Meals.

To many in the UK, porridge is a hearty breakfast, but to over 479,000 school children in Malawi who receive a daily mug of maize-based likuni phala from Mary’s Meals, it is a powerful incentive to go to school, and the only guaranteed meal they will have each day.  Mary’s Meals provides a daily meal to chronically hungry children to attract them to school where they can get an education which could lift them out of poverty in later life. It costs Mary’s Meals just £6.15 to provide a daily meal for a child for a whole school year.

200 S1 pupils in Holyrood Secondary School Glasgow will be served porridge at the same time as pupils at the Catholic Institute Primary School in Malawi with a live link via Glow.  Join us and tell us how you are celebrating World Porridge Day and find out exactly what World Porridge Day means to the pupils in Malawi.

Glow Science video resources

Glow Science is a great free resource offering rich engaging learning material for pupils aged 8-14. Inspire your pupils to engage with Science across the curriculum.

As we progress into the second year of CfE implementation, the search for engaging, curriculum driven resources is high on the agenda of most practitioners.

Glow Science is a stunning video-based learning resource designed for pupils aged 8 to 14 to engage their imaginations and enhance their understanding of Science in the modern world. Over 500 three-minute films and their associated learning materials (including quizzes, lesson ideas, extension questions, diagrams, images), cover Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science. The videos are searchable by a unique mind map tool, or by E&O code.

Topics in Chemistry and Physics include the Periodic Table and Newton’s laws of motion; Biology includes films about the brain, heart, pregnancy, senses, muscles, lungs, hormones; Earth Science covers a wide range of topics from volcanoes to renewable energy.

Glow Science can be used in many different ways to support the Sciences experiences and outcomes, as well as other areas of Curriculum for Excellence. It has been available free to all teachers in Scotland since April 2011 and is accessed using your Glow username and password.

Katy Sowden, principal teacher at Williamston Primary school in Livingston, has seen a marked improvement in levels of pupil engagement since she started using Glow Science as well as helping to deepen her own understanding of science concepts. You can read a cookbook of Katy and her pupils using the resource in class.

Sciences on Glow – Developments on the National Glow Group

Sciences DOs worked with RM today to plan and begin implementation of updates to the Sciences National Glow Group. Why are the changes needed? A word which often appears in practitioner feedback is “overwhelmed”. The success of Glow means there are a vast array of resources available, and busy practitioners can find there is too much to navigate easily. So we are hoping that you will find the changes beneficial and make Glow an even more useful tool. We will keep you up to date with a date for the new site to go live, and look forward to your feedback to help us improve it further. Many thanks also to the practitioners who joined us “live” to feedback on use of the new Glow Science videos resource.

Using Glow/Technologies to Support Learning, Teaching and Assessment

Today I had the pleasure of visiting Bridgend Primary, in West Lothian to find how they used Glow and other Technologies last session in their Primary 6/7 class. Glow was used in a number of ways to support learning and teaching within various areas such as; linking with a school in Orkney, a Class Election (involving cluster schools) and topic work.

Luckily you also have the chance to find out about what they have been doing at Bridgend Primary, as they are presenting at the Education Showcase on Thursday 22nd September at 2pm at the Scottish Learning Festival.  Their presentation is called Using Glow/Technologies to Support Learning, Teaching and Assessment. You do not have to sign up to this presentation, so pop along and find out what Bridgend Primary have been up to.

Self-evaluation in the context of CfE

8th September – Early Years and Primary: 2.00 – 3.30
                                       Secondary: 4.15 – 5.45

You may be interested in joining this Glow Meet with Kenneth Muir, HM Chief Inspector of Education from Education Scotland to find out more about this topic. He will present on three key areas under the theme of self-evaluation that will help to support the implementation of Curriculum for Excellence. The three areas are:

• Self-evaluation questions to support implementation
• Self-evaluation within the new inspection model
• Inspection advice note (Aug 2011) – further guidance on the implementation of progress with Curriculum for Excellence.

The main focus of Kenneth’s input will be to provide practical advice on the role of self-evaluation in implementing Curriculum for Excellence. He will also set out the expectations of HM Inspectors which are based firmly on the national implementation timetable and expectations endorsed by the Curriculum for Excellence Management Board. There will be a number of opportunities for discussion both during Kenneth’s presentation and following it.

This Glow Meet CPD opportunity will be relevant for all of those interesting in exploring the topic of self-evaluation. There will be two sessions on 8 Sept:

Early Years and Primary: 2.00 – 3.30
Secondary: 4.15 – 5.45

To sign up for this Glow Meet visit the Glow group here: http://glo.li/pcN5lC

We will inform anyone who has secured a place at the ‘live’ session in Optima, otherwise we look forward to seeing you in Glow Meet from 2.30 to 3.30 or 4.15 to 5.15 on the 8th September.

Scots Language Glow Meet

Christine De Luca reads ‘Dodie’s Phenomenal Pheesic’ to a class at Sound Primary School, broadcasted live via Glow Meet

On Monday 5th September 2011 at 11:15am Christine De Luca will be in Sound Primary School, Lerwick, reading to a P5 class, from her Shetland dialect translation of Roald Dahl.

Roald Dahl’s famous children’s book ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ contains such a wealth of charming situations, characters, and imaginative language that it stood out as a perfect opportunity for translation into Shetland dialect. Christine De Luca, an admired writer in Shetland, Scotland and beyond, took Roald Dahl’s classic and created a fantastic new version which keeps the story and spirit of the original but tells it in Shetland dialect with Shetland characters.

The dialect of Shetland, like so many of the dialects of Scotland, has unique features but also similarities with its neighbouring Scots languages. Christine De Luca is well-known for her talented use of Shetland dialect in her poetry and children’s stories and is an experienced, expressive reader.

The Creative Links team at Shetland Islands Council’s would like to share this reading with as many other schools as possible so are broadcasting the event live via Glow. After the reading the author will answer questions from children in the class – and also any that come in from viewing schools.

Visit Glow TV to sign up and take part in this event: http://glo.li/nw6vbx

Food for Thought Community Cafe

I recently was invited to the Food for Thought Community Cafe at St. Nicholas Primary School in Broxburn, West Lothian.

Food for Thought is a Fair-Trade community café run by the pupils of St. Nicholas Primary School. At Food for Thought you can share a tea or coffee and some delicious home baking over a chat while learning more about Fair-Trade and how it helps countries in the developing world. You can also buy Fair-Trade goods and find out more about the pupil’s learning in school. From time to time they may provide entertainment or run workshops for you to get involved in. At Food For Thought their aim is to provide a happy atmosphere and a strong sense of community.

Food for Thought was dreamt up by the pupils while they were working on a block of learning about Global Citizenship. It is a Social Enterprise venture and profits will support their sister school in Ghana and local community groups supported by the St. Vincent de Paul.

You can find out more information about their project and the cafe by clicking here to visit their blog. You can also follow them on Twitter @fftcc.
