Holmes Rahe Score Reflection – 27/02/2017

After completing the Holmes Rah Score Stress rating sheet, I scored a total of 152; which I’m told ‘implies a 50% chance of a major health breakdown in the next 2 years’. My biggest stress related event accounting to this score was the death of my papa just under a year ago. I was very … Continue reading Holmes Rahe Score Reflection – 27/02/2017

Holmes Rahe Inventory

when doing the Holmes Raye Inventory I got a score of 208 which puts me in the 150 to 300 points category where I  have a 50% chance of health breakdown in the next 2 years.  This is a clear indication that there is a lot more stress in my life than I was initially aware … Continue reading Holmes Rahe Inventory

when doing the Holmes Raye Inventory I got a score of 208 which puts me in the 150 to 300 points category where I  have a 50% chance of health breakdown in the next 2 years.  This is a clear indication that there is a lot more stress in my life than I was initially aware of

When receiving this score I was generally surprised as I like to think I am not a person that get to stressed out about things. However on reflection of the questions asked I realised that 6 of them apply to myself which had relatively high points attached to them. Although this is the case I feel like overall I handle my stress well and do not often feel extremely stressed

Over the last year there the most stressful things I have had to deal with have primarily been a family death soon after family illness.   Although through out them both I have been able to stay focused and positive. The other things I sometimes stress about it university work and money(not having enough).

The main way I combat my stress is by communicating with my family as I know they are my biggest safety net and know they all just want the best for me so are happy to listen and offer advise. Along with this I also find comfort in going to the gym to clear my head when things get especially stressful. When going to the gym I almost always bump into someone I know who usually is able to make light heart of things.  Another way I would be less stressed in my life would be to try make better my time management as I can often worry when I forgotten about something due with either university or work.

Holmes Rache Inventory

According to the Holmes Rache Inventory, I received a score of 174 which places me in the category of people who have a 50% of having a mental breakdown in the next 2 years. The Holmes-Rahe Stress Inventory

I scored 50 when taking this test and this suggests that my levels of stress are relatively low as I have had a relatively low level of life change over the past year. I was surpried by this result as I have felt quite high levels of stress throughout this year at different points and … Continue reading The Holmes-Rahe Stress Inventory

Reflection on The Holmes- Rahe Life Stress Inventory

In the Holmes- Rahe life stress inventory test I scored 216 points. This implies that I am 50% more likely to suffer a major mental breakdown in the next two years. When completing the test, I felt like I had avoided a lot of the high scoring events, such as the death of a close … Continue reading Reflection on The Holmes- Rahe Life Stress Inventory

In the Holmes- Rahe life stress inventory test I scored 216 points. This implies that I am 50% more likely to suffer a major mental breakdown in the next two years. When completing the test, I felt like I had avoided a lot of the high scoring events, such as the death of a close friend/ family member and divorce which may be deemed as a life event that may have ‘more impact’ on a person than what the likes of a vacation may have.

I was very shocked to be in the second category because I don’t feel like I have had a massive major event that has changed me as a person in the previous year. It makes me a little nervous to think that a test can determine what changes may happen in my life in the next few years. This does not mean I particularly agree with this test. In my opinion, I would put myself in the first category because I don’t believe I have gone through a lot of major changes in the previous year, with coming to University being an exception. I am still struggling with the differences in University and school, for example being a lot more independent in your studies. This causes me some stress but I wouldn’t say a massive amount.

To combat my stress, I believe that I have to be organised and keep on track with the workload given. Being in control of my workload will decrease my stress levels massively and keep me up to date with my Modules.

The Holmes – Rahe Stress Inventory

After completing the Holmes Rahe Stress Inventory I scored 117. Thus the test therefore stated that I have experienced a relatively low amount of life change and so had a low susceptibility to stress-induced health breakdown. Looking over these questions it has highlighted to me that I have not experienced many of these life changes […]

Are Scottish People “unhealthy”?

Are Scottish people unhealthy? It is a fair question. In a country famed for snacks like shortbread, tablet and deep fried mars bars (disgusting, I know) and drinks like Irn Bru it would be understandable to assume that Scottish people are unhealthy. Studies show 97.5 per cent of Scots are likely to be either cigarette … Continue reading Are Scottish People “unhealthy”?

The Glasgow Effect was a measurement of the poor health, poverty and deprivation rates in Glasgow compared to that of two other cities in England. The study found that Glasgow did indeed have the highest rate of each aspect studied, thus showing that their hypothesis was correct. It was found that the gap between life expectancies in the most deprived and affluent areas was increasing due to the poor health and poverty. ‘SHeS’ data was used to investigate differences between dietary habits in Glasgow and other areas of Scotland. It was found that poor health was partly a result of poor diet, alcohol consumption, obesity and smoking. This showed why the mortality rate for those in Glasgow was lower than that of other areas in the UK.

Overall, researchers found that they do indeed believe there is a ‘Glasgow Effect’. However, they mentioned that they cannot be completely sure or rove that this is the case due to not having enough evidence to do so and there maybe being other explanations as to why the poor health rate, deprivation and poverty levels are higher.
