Religion, Culture and ‘Unchurched Spirituality’My learning of the Society and Lifestyle module continues, today’s input was based on “Religion, Culture and Unchurched Spiritually. Some topics addressed today have left my rather perplexed and I will definitely have to devote further independent study to these aspects. The lecture focused on religion, culture and the term unchurched spiritually, today I consolidated my understanding from last week’s initial lecture. Today I learnt we acquire religion and that religion and culture inversely influence each other, conveying that religion gives us an identity and possible model a way of life, highlighting that religion can be a guidance to what we eat, wear and music we listen to, et cetera. I also learnt, in-depth, the social issues (either good or can influence problems) that can underpin religion, for instance ‘material claims’, which implies religions can encourage followers to be generous and helpful. Likewise, ‘altruism’ which is in contrast. I gained a better acknowledgment of scholars, their stance on religion/culture and their social alignment. In particularly the ideologies of Karl Marx, Max Weber and Bruce Lincoln. Further to this I understood what is meant to be ‘Unchurched Spiritually’ conveying that religion takes place outside a place of worship and the religion is not based on creed or a formed structure, this facet of religion is increasingly evolving, as ‘organised’ religion and churches decrease. I found the concepts addressed in the lectures to be interesting and not too difficult to understand, this is in contrast to the tutorial, researching Karl Marx and the modern criticism of religion to be I discovered this to be somewhat complex to comprehend, it was rather challenging to find journals, books or academic. The main point I attained from this presently there is not the same force or emphasis to follow as there was in past centuries. In order to advanced my understanding of the subjects of today’s inputs I will continue to look into further reading of academic journals, articles and books in addition to notes and past paper questions in order to prepare for the exams but also to secure my understanding. As a student teacher and perspective teacher it is important that I support pupils, their religion, culture and the way of life they follow, also keeping in mind that every religion is unique and have varying lifestyles. Therefore, it is important that I continue to revise all aspects discussed today and in past lectures in order to make better sense of the topic of religion and culture, and the subsequently impact of religion and identity, ensuring I am relating my responses to scholars and their ideologies and theories.

Religion, Culture and Unchurched Spirituality

Today’s class was very interesting and educational. I learned a lot about new scholars and went into more depth regarding unchurched spirituality. I learned that Max Weber was a German Philosopher who believed that religion  is important in our lives, whereas, Karl Marx believed that religion is the ‘opium of the people’. He said that it is the drug that deadens the soul. He also believed that religion’s promise of a greater life after death was a capitalist illusion.

I found the videos and information about Jehovah’s Witnesses very useful as I was not aware that they do not wish to receive blood transfusions for medical treatment.

Today has made me further aware of religious aspects I had not known before. In order to find out more, I will engage in further academic reading.

In brief, what have I learned from the lecture, independent task and tutorial today? Please be specific.

In todays lecture I learned the effects and influences cultures as well as society have through religion. As well as learning about the scholars that go along with it. I also learned about ‘unchurched’ spirituality and the characteristics which co-inside with this topic. In the tutorial I learned about the scholar Max Weber in more detail as I had the chance to research and find out what his appraise religion as culture relating to its importance in both past and present society.  Within the independent task I was again able to research in more detail what the scholars said about religion as a social problem and social good.

Do I understand the main concepts and issues of the topics and areas I have learnt today? Where possible, how can I evidence this knowledge?

I did struggle with some of the concepts and issues but I feel that I will be able to improve this through doing past papers as I am putting what I have learned and research into practice.

Are there concepts and issues that I am struggling to comprehend? What can I do about that?

How has my knowledge in this area developed/increased today? Are there specific areas that require particular improvement? How will I address that?

My knowledge on this area increased today due to being able to link scholars to different sub topic learned in the lecture and this was done through both the tutorial and the independent study task.

If at all, how does what I have learnt today relate to my general understanding of how, using religion as an example, society impacts on lifestyle and vice-versa? Any possible career opportunities/aspirations as a future primary teacher on the things I have learnt today?

Are there specific issues/areas of what I have learnt today that I want to improve? If so, what are they and what do I plan to do?

The areas which I learned today and would like to improve is to link the scholars to different topics and fully understand what is being said by different scholars and their approaches.

Today’s input was challenging however very interesting.

I enjoyed learning about and looking at the different Scholars. It is interesting to focus on scholars who have contrasting beliefs around the same topic. I learned that Karl Max who is a German philosopher who developed the theory of international communism was critical to religion. Karl Max believed that people are obsessed and deluded by religion. He argued that religion gave people false hope and it was the opium of the people. Karl Max thought that religion was an illusion.

I also found the study of Matt Waggoner very interesting. Matt believed that religion had a purpose in people’s lives. He mentioned that religion is not an illusion or a mental mistake but something that societies regard as valuable.

I managed to to grasp most concepts in the lecture and tutorial however I will further my knowledge by further academic reading.
