During our dance workshop we first did stretches and workout games to warm up. The students in groups, taking turns, were responsible for leading and teaching these activities to the rest of the students. After this we practised our own dances with our groups for 5/10 minutes to remind ourselves what we have done over the past few weeks. We then practised the full choreography with the class from last week in order to feel more confident in performing which I found very helpful as I had to be reminded on quite a big portion of the dance. We then got the whole choreography recorded.

I think dancing is really beneficial and I’m really glad I had the opportunity to have a few workshops in it. Pupils should begin with learning the 10 basic dance moves first then they can create their own choreographies. We watched our dance videos in order to evaluate our own performance. We discussed that children should have the chance to create, preform, appreciate and evaluate their dance work. Pupils could evaluate their own dance, a peers or even as a class evaluate a choreography such as for example the ‘Nutcracker’. Children should have the appreciation of different styles and cultures of dance. With the three stars and a wish method I evaluated that I;

  • Had good timing
  • My musicality and rhythm were accurate
  • I worked well as a group
  • An area to improve is making sure I remember every move and having more confidence.

We used this sheet to help us with what areas to look out for in our dances and give us ideas on what kind of things to mention for our evaluation.

The experiences and outcomes touched on during this input are;

  • I can respond to the experience of dance by discussing my thoughts and feelings. I can give and accept constructive comment on my own and others’ work. EXA 0-11a / EXA 1-11a / EXA 2-11a / EXA 3-11a
  • I am becoming aware of different features of dance and can practise and perform steps, formations and short dance. EXA 1-10a
  • I can analyse technical aspects of dance, make informed judgements and express personal opinions on my own and others’ work. EXA 4-11a

In the music workshop we got taught more about ukulele’s and how to play them. We got shown that the outer string is actually lower than the middle ones unlike for example a guitar. The notes on a ukulele go in order G C E A. Music has never been my strong attribute and it is a subject I am not confident in teaching but todays workshop has shown me that not really isn’t hard and I could become fully comfortable with teaching it to pupils with a little bit more practise. We learned how to play several different types of notes in order for us to be able to play different Christmas songs such as ‘Jingle bells’ and ‘Last Christmas’. I found that I struggled quite a bit with this as I need to get more used to changing notes at a quicker pace so just to get more familiar with them. I did really enjoy this input as it was something new to me as well as really fun and interesting.
