So you want to be a space biologist or rocket scientist? (thanks to Tim Peake)

Rocket Science LogoOf the many and various items that British ESA astronaut Tim Peake has taken aboard the International Space Station, you may not have considered 2kg of rocket seeds being among them. The seeds are staying with Tim for 6 months and packs will be allocated to registered schools on their return to Earth.

Schools can register interest in packs which will contain some of these space rocket seeds and a comparative set of seeds that have stayed on Earth. It will give pupils the chance to be space biologists and investigate how space effects the growth of plants.

Along with the seeds, schools and other educational organisations will be able to use a comprehensive suite of teaching and learning resources that are being developed by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and Science and Plants for schools. Resources for both primary and secondary schools will be available, and will include suggestions on scientific investigations and experiments inspired by the project and even details on how to design and build a table top Mars greenhouse.

Follow the link below to find out more about getting involved!

Education Scotland Sharing Practice event – Sciences

es logoSciences%20logo2Sharing Practice Event – Meeting Learners’ Needs – Wednesday 27 January 2016. Tynecastle High School, Edinburgh.

This network was set up to investigate strategies for learning and teaching in classroom where more than one NQ level is being taught at the same time. Our first meeting learners’ needs network event was on 31st October 2014. At that event, delegates chose a strategy to develop and trial over the next few months. At the follow up event on 8th June, as well as some examples of interesting practice, returning delegates gave short presentations on their findings. This event will look at further developments made, celebrating success and learning from our experiences.

Lighting the Future: Brighter, Smaller, Faster!

CaptureThe next in the autumn series of Institute of Physics Scotland public lectures in Glasgow will take place on Thursday, 17th December, at 7.30pm in Room 222 of the Kelvin Building, School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Glasgow.

Janet Milne, of the Intelligent Lighting Centre at the University of Strathclyde will give a talk entitled “Lighting the Future: Brighter, Smaller, Faster!”

This lecture will continue the theme of light-related talks that marks International Year of Light 2015, and is also appropriately festive (just think Christmas lights…)

“Solid state LEDs are revolutionising the lighting industry and are now considered by some to be the future of wireless communications. This event will discuss the development of LEDs for lighting, their benefits and limitations, and current research that is developing both the lighting and communications potential of these versatile and energy efficient light sources.”

Janet Milne graduated with a first class honours degree in Physics from the University of Glasgow and has since developed a broad base of commercial business skills during 17 years in high-technology product development, manufacturing and commercialisation. She has Executive Director level management experience in both early- and late-stage SMEs and currently provides strategic direction to the Intelligent Lighting Centre through connections with industry, government and end-users.

Lecture is free and open to all, and begins at 7.30pm in Room 222 of the Kelvin Building.   For more information see http://www.tinyurl.com/glasgow-iop/

Scottish Education Awards 2016

SEA2016

Sciences, Technologies, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Award

The Scottish Education Awards recognise schools and centres that have developed a vibrant and progressive culture and climate of continuous innovation.

The culture and ethos should promote respect, ambition and achievement while improving outcomes for all learners in ways which eliminate inequity.

Do you know a school or centre that can respond to the statement above and in detail to the questions below? Then why not nominate them for the STEM Award?

Nominations should include practical activities and projects that the school or centre has undertaken, detailing the impact these strategies have had on pupils, staff, parents and the community.

  • In what ways do learners in your establishment demonstrate successful application of STEM skills?
  • In what ways are learners using STEM to develop skills for learning, life and work?
  • In what ways do you work with partners/parents/wider community to support STEM?
  • How is STEM supporting the four contexts of learning (curriculum, inter-disciplinary learning, ethos and life of the schools and opportunities for personal achievement)?

Describe the outcomes of these approaches in terms of impact on:

  • children and young people
  • the whole school community
  • the wider community

Nominations close at 12 noon on Monday 15 February 2016

Quantum Physics Course

Quantum Physics Course March 4th, 2016 – Satrosphere Science Centre, Aberdeen

Glasgow University is recognised as a world leader in quantum technology. In this course, researchers from QuantIC, the quantum enhanced imaging hub, based  at the university’s physics department will guide teachers through some of the new H and AH physics content, setting it in the context of their own work. There will be practical sessions too, giving delegates the chance to participate in activities to support the teaching of quantum physics in the classroom. Resources will be provided to take back to school, including a Photonics Explorer optics kit.

Only 20 places are available.  The course costs £180. Local Authority schools and FE colleges will be entitled to receive a Cutting Edge Science Award of £180 for each delegate in attendance. The Cutting Edge Science Award is funded by Research Councils UK (RCUK)  administered by the National Science Learning Network.

To apply for a place please  download and fill in the application form here or request one from sts@sserc.org.uk This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Assessment for Learning in STEM Teaching

future learnNational STEM Learning Centre

A free online course facilitated by Future Learn and led by Dylan Wiliam and Christine Harrison, to help STEM teachers get to grips with Assessment for Learning.

Assessment for Learning is a term that’s widely used in education, but applied in ways that are variable in their effectiveness. This free online course – designed for STEM teachers in primary and secondary schools, and sixth form and further education (FE) colleges – will help you understand and use it more effectively. This course is designed for English-speaking teachers of STEM subjects in primary and secondary schools, and sixth form and FE colleges. It’s also relevant to trainee teachers; teacher trainers; those thinking about a career in STEM teaching; and developers of STEM-related course materials.

It is a CPD course for people who, in the main, have a degree level qualification, or who are in the process of obtaining one.

Further information and registration details can be accessed following this link.
