Red Kite animation competition – deadline 19 April

Budding animators are invited to submit short animated films of 1-3 minutes, based upon either a real or imagined backstory to an object of their choice, housed in one of Edinburgh Museums & Galleries, including the Museums Store. Check www.edinburghmuseums.org and below for details of venues.

Submissions in the following three competition categories are invited:

Primary Schools; Secondary Schools; and Youth 18-24 years/ Current Students of any age.

Deadline: 19th April 2013 at 5pm. Entries are free.

The Kist Scots Language Resource

This resource is a digital version of The Kist / A’Chiste anthology and contains prose, poetry and drama in various dialects of Scots, and in Gaelic. Texts in Gaelic have been translated. Those in Scots usually have a glossary. The anthology is primarily targeted at learners working at second and third levels.

Painting Award opportunity for senior phase students

The Jolomo Schools Painting Award sponsored by Bank of Scotland will be run for the first time in school year 2012/13.

Students from the senior phase at all Scottish secondary schools are invited to take part in the inaugural schools painting award. Students are asked to paint and submit their interpretation of the Scottish landscape.

The winner will receive £500, with an additional £500 going to the winning school’s Art Department. The winner will also have the opportunity to be mentored by the artist John Lowrie Morrison (Jolomo).

Call for Scottish games design entries for the Kodu Kup 2013

This is a visual programming language and games lab environment which allows students from Second Level upwards to design and build three dimensional games using either a PC or an XBox and XBox controller…’

A one day conference presented by IPA Scotland in partnership with Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People; with support from Creative Scotland.

The conference aims to celebrate and raise awareness of the adoption of the UN General Comment on article 31: children’s right to culture, leisure and play and to explore how policy-makers and practitioners can make the expectations of the UN General Comment a reality in Scotland.

The day will provide opportunities for individuals and organisations from the fields of culture, arts, leisure, play, and human rights to come together and explore how best to work collaboratively to ensure that all children in Scotland have the best opportunities to access culture, leisure and play.

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s Family Concert on Saturday 9 February features a new song book for a chorus of 300 children – A Little Book of Monsters. With lyrics by Matt Harvey and music by Stephen Deazley the book is full of songs about the kind of creatures that live under your bed….

Join Stephen Deazley and Matt Harvey for a Glow Meet where you’ll get the chance to ask questions, take part in creative interactive activities and find out what it is like to be a composer or poet.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe Poster Competition

The search for the 2013 Edinburgh Festival Fringe Poster has begun!

The Fringe Schools Poster Competition is open to all Scottish students aged 5 – 16. They are looking for a unique and eye-catching poster design that represents the variety and vibrancy of the Fringe.

Learning resources, including lesson plans linked to CfE experiences and outcomes, are available for teachers to introduce pupils to the Fringe and inspire them to create winning posters.

The winning design will become the official poster for the 2013 Fringe and there are prizes of up to £750 for the top three artists and their schools. Pupils could also be in with the chance of seeing their artwork displayed in an exhibition.

New support for young people to gain vocational qualifications and to work in the arts and creative industries

Up to 23, year-long, paid Modern Apprenticeships with arts organisations aimed at young people aged 16 to 20 will be created in a partnership between Creative Scotland, Young Scot, Creative & Cultural Skills Scotland and Creative Skillset.

Young people taking part in the Modern Apprenticeships will study for vocational qualifications while gaining professional experience working for an arts organisation. Creative Scotland will offer employers up to £8,000 towards the salary of each apprentice, enabling organisations to provide positions.

Starcatchers Silly Moments – January 24

On Thursday 24 January, to celebrate Global Belly Laugh Day and the launch of Suzanne Zeedyk’s new films which show the ways in which young children connect with the world around them, Starcatchers will be holding a series of ‘Silly Moments’ in Shopping Centres and other public spaces in Dundee, Glenrothes, Edinburgh, Hamilton and Barrhead. Starcatchers’ Artists will be in each area to engage with the public, try to make them laugh and take part in a Silly Moment.
