Scottish Government is currently consulting on children’s rights as performers and associated licensing arrangements. Performing arts organisations and individuals working with children are invited to submit responses by 6th June.

An innovative music project culminated this week with 1400 Fife primary children coming together for the first ever Big Strum in the Rothes Halls, Glenrothes.
The event celebrated the many achievements of children and their primary teachers from over 30 schools who together have been learning singing and musicianship skills through the humble ukulele – and having a lot of fun in the process!
Led by primary music specialist, Ann Rae, and supported with Scottish Government Youth Music Initiative funding, plans are already in place to include
up to 60 primary schools in Fife next session.
An independent evaluation of the project, focusing on the quality of the CPD offered to teachers and the impact on children and their learning, has been commissioned from the University of Dundee and will be published later this summer.

Four young people in Edinburgh were celebrated for their artistic achievements at a ceremony at the National Gallery of Scotland this week when the Paolozzi Prize for Art was awarded.
27 pupils were nominated from 13 High Schools and Edinburgh Secure Services, who attended the award ceremony along with their art teachers, families and friends.
Artist and judge Duncan Robertson said:
“Eduardo Paolozzi was a great encourager of young talent, and would have been very supportive of this award in his name”.
This annual prize was organised by the City of Edinburgh Council’s Arts and Learning team in partnership with the National Gallery of Scotland.

In partnership with Creative Scotland, PRS for Music Foundation is proud to announce the launch of the first ever UK-wide New Music Biennial, presenting a series of brand new music commissions to audiences across the UK in 2014.
Organisations (not limited to those working primarily in music) can apply for up to £20,000 to commission and perform new work from individual composers across all genres. The scheme will support and promote up to twenty new commissions, which will be performed across the length and breadth of the UK as Scotland prepares to celebrate the Commonwealth Games.
This first edition of New Music Biennial has been developed with Creative Scotland, Arts Council England and the British Council. Additional support has been provided by Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Arts Council of Wales and John S. Cohen Foundation. The scheme will be delivered in partnership with BBC Radio 3, NMC Recordings, Southbank Centre and Glasgow UNESCO City of Music.

The Creative Industries Conference for Young People brought together 90 senior students from South Ayrshire Council’s Belmont Academy, Carrick Academy, Girvan Academy, Kyle Academy, Prestwick and Queen Margaret Academy. Each student was specially selected to attend the conference as they are particularly interested in pursuing a career in the arts.
South Ayrshire Councillor Margaret Toner, Lifelong Learning Portfolio Holder said: “The conference was a great success and very beneficial to the students.
“It is important that we ensure that students who are artistic and are determined to have a career in the arts know the reality of how the industry works. I was particularly impressed with the way in which the students from the University of the West of Scotland passed on their knowledge and experience to our school students.
“We have a great reputation in this country for delivering high quality arts productions and I am positive that some of these students will achieve great things in the industry in the future.”
Students from the University of the West of Scotland delivered seminars and hands on workshops for delegates providing peer to peer mentoring through the day in a range of industry related themes, including film sound effects, radio and screen writing and theatre production.
A number of market place style displays enabled the school students to learn more about the arts and theatre companies, digital media and heritage organisations that exist locally and nationally. These organisations offer direct support and opportunities for young people in creative industries.

The conference was funded by Education Scotland and Creative Scotland and is part the Creative Learning Network in South Ayrshire Council.
Scottish schools will be provided with an additional £1 million to buy musical instruments for their pupils, the Scottish Government has announced. The move has been made by Minister for Learning Alasdair Allan who has also formed a new group to address the issue of how music tuition is delivered, including the question of charges for pupils sitting SQA music exams.
