Funding for science programme

The Scottish Government has announced that a national programme of science events and exhibitions will take place across the country to celebrate the Year of Natural Scotland. The activity will take place in Scotland’s four science centres in 2013.

Full programme details are still to be announced but highlights are set to include:
·         A series of community and school events celebrating sustainable living and new technologies at Dundee Science Centre.
·         A festival focusing on sustainable science at Glasgow Science Centre, with hands-on workshops and ‘meet the expert’ sessions.
·         Workshops and exhibitions at Our Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh celebrating the beauty of Scotland’s natural environment.
·         A ‘Green Energy Discovery Weekend’ and a symposium for primary pupils at Aberdeen’s Satrosphere Science Centre.

A one day conference presented by IPA Scotland in partnership with Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People; with support from Creative Scotland.

The conference aims to celebrate and raise awareness of the adoption of the UN General Comment on article 31: children’s right to culture, leisure and play and to explore how policy-makers and practitioners can make the expectations of the UN General Comment a reality in Scotland.

The day will provide opportunities for individuals and organisations from the fields of culture, arts, leisure, play, and human rights to come together and explore how best to work collaboratively to ensure that all children in Scotland have the best opportunities to access culture, leisure and play.

Starcatchers Silly Moments – January 24

On Thursday 24 January, to celebrate Global Belly Laugh Day and the launch of Suzanne Zeedyk’s new films which show the ways in which young children connect with the world around them, Starcatchers will be holding a series of ‘Silly Moments’ in Shopping Centres and other public spaces in Dundee, Glenrothes, Edinburgh, Hamilton and Barrhead. Starcatchers’ Artists will be in each area to engage with the public, try to make them laugh and take part in a Silly Moment.

Creative Conversation with Tim Brighouse

The third of this series of Creative Conversations (and the first of 2013) will be on Thursday 31st January at 4pm for 4.30 till 5.30pm with wine and canapes afterwards (venue to follow with confirmation of attendance). The Creative Catalyst this session is Tim Brighouse.

Professor Tim Brighouse will share and discuss how encouraging creativity and improving schools has to be a joint effort involving partnership, commitment and shared purpose. That is how Tim Brighouse has worked throughout his career. He has one of the most remarkable track records in education throughout which runs a commitment to creativity in every sense. This is a rare opportunity to engage with Tim Brighouse in a conversation about creativity and how to achieve the best outcomes for young people without compromising the quality of education and experience. Tim will bring wisdom, experience, curiosity and interest – come and join in!

Mike Rosendale (Head of Service Schools and Communities) will provide the welcome and as with all previous Creative Conversations, David Cameron will facilitate the discussion. You are invited to continue the conversations afterwards with Tim, Mike, David and colleagues over wine and canapes!

Award winning Creative Conversations featured in TESS

Congratulations to Edinburgh CLN whose Creative Conversations programme was the winner in the Creative Approaches category of City of Edinburgh Children and Families Achievement Awards on 2 December.

Blinded by the Light…….

Edinburgh’s second Creative Conversation of 2012/13 takes place on Monday 26 November, 4 for 4.30pm until 5.30pm followed by wine and canapes (venue to follow on confirmation of attendance).

The creative catalysts for this event are Laurie O’Donnell and Jim Elder, and the conversation is facilitated by David Cameron.

Creative Conversations are Edinburgh’s Creative Learning Network and aim to stimulate professional dialogue about creativity within Curriculum for Excellence.

Laurie O’Donnell is an independent consultant, adviser and visiting professor specialising in the space where learning, technology and innovation collide. His background is in secondary schools and local government advisory services. His last full-time role was as director of learning and technology at Learning and Teaching Scotland.

Jim Elder is an independent education consultant and technology implementation adviser. Jim’s background is in primary education, national education development and local authority quality improvement. His last full time role was with Apple as Senior Education Manager for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Xpress Yourself – Make a Movie – Edinburgh based 12-19 year olds

Screen Education Edinburgh in partnership with Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian Football Clubs launched Xpress Yourself, film making workshops for 12–19 year-olds, with priority given to those from ‘areas of deprivation’ in the city. Funded by Creative Scotland’s CashBack for Creativity programme, participants are given a taste of the filmmaking process, with the opportunity of receiving ongoing training and support via ‘core filmmaking groups’ based at each club.

Creative Conversations, Edinburgh – 29 October

The first of Edinburgh CLN’s 2012/13 Creative Conversations is on Monday 29th October at 4 for 4.30 till 5.30 with wine and canapes afterwards (venue to follow with confirmation of attendance) with Frank Crawford as this year’s first Creative Catalyst.

Frank is a former Chief Inspector (HMIe), forward thinker, innovator and enthusiastic biker. He has been centrally involved in the development of Scottish education and remains at the forefront of thinking. Frank will take a creative approach, sketching out ideas about meeting the demands of external evaluation, handling inspections, what self evaluation should really be and how we need to think about change and innovation. Frank is in great demand internationally so this is a great chance to catch up with him in Edinburgh.

As with all previous Creative Conversations, David Cameron will facilitate the discussion and you are invited to continue the conversations afterwards with Frank, David and colleagues over wine and canapes!

National Creative Learning Network at SLF 2012

The National Creative Learning Network (NCLN) is a community of practice which has a leadership role in championing and advocating creativity in both formal and informal learning contexts. The Network is well represented at this year’s SLF, with members from local authorities across Scotland leading workshops and seminars throughout the two days of the festival.
