The Standard for Career Long Professional Learning

GTC Scotland have been working on a revision of the Professional Standards, and will publish drafts of each of the revised standards in August for consultation, with a view to publishing the Standards at the start of 2013.

As Scotland’s New Writing Theatre The Traverse prides itself on the close relationships they have with our writers. Join our Associate Director for a practical workshop that explores the relationship and journey of a playwright and director.

Spotlight on Theatre – Acting

This second session hosted at the Lyceum Theatre focuses on acting. Take part in an acting skills workshop with our Drama Artist and learn all about careers in Acting and the routes and courses which can lead to them. There will also be a Q and A session with a professional actor – so have your questions ready!

Sharing practice across artforms – a future possible theatre

10am – 4pm, 3 Oct, Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, G5 9DS

In July this year, Artworks Scotland commissioned five of Scotland’s most active artists working in participatory settings, to take part in a peer mentoring exchange as part of a National Theatre of Scotland programme in Philadelphia. Working with People’s Light, the “devising lab” explored techniques to develop high quality theatre across a professional and community context.
Artworks Scotland and Citizens Theatre are now hosting a small symposium with three of these artists, to share their learning and engage with other artists interested in exploring the challenges and opportunities for peer learning whilst actively delivering a project.

Catrin Evans, director and activist will lead an exploration of the director’s role in the creation of a site specific piece of theatre and international collaborations.

MJ McCarthy, musician and sound designer, will present his thoughts and some of the soundscapes made during the Lab.
Simon Sharkey, Associate Director of National Theatre of Scotland will present his learning about commissioning and leading cross artform collaboration in community and professional contexts on an international scale.

Spotlight on Theatre – Careers event via Glow

Festival Theatre Edinburgh, The Lyceum Theatre and The Traverse Theatre are holding a unique interactive careers event on Tuesday 11th September. Places to attend have already been booked up but if you are interested in finding out more, and watching the sessions you can now join in on Glow TV.

The event is aimed at 5th and 6th year pupils interested in pursuing a career in the theatre, and will also act as a CPD session for Drama, Guidance/Support Teachers and Career’s Advisors. In addition pupils in upper primary and lower primary may be interested in many aspects of the day.

It is a busy day with lots to join in with:

An introduction to careers in arts administration, focusing on marketing, press, PR and programming. Our experienced staff share their tips for the top in promoting and selling theatre to diverse audiences across the central belt of Scotland, but beware – it’s not all paparazzi and showbiz glamour!

Dundee Science Centre is hosting an open evening for all teachers and educators, showcasing the work of the Science Learning Team and the opportunities available to schools throughout the coming academic year.  The centre will be open from 4 pm and there will be the chance to see the Robot exhibition and see the range of science resource boxes available for loan.  This is a free event.

New Guidance for Expressive Arts Practitioners

Education Scotland has published new resources to support practitioners in planning learning and teaching in line with Scotland’s new National Qualifications . These include graphic design and contemporary sculpture (N4, N5 and Higher) plus contemporary and jazz dance technique and advice on the choreographic process (N5).

A symposium with the National Theatre of Scotland and Citizens Theatre

Wednesday, 5 September, 10.00am – 4.00pm

Citizens Theatre, Glasgow

The National Theatre of Scotland and the Citizens Theatre are inviting interested individuals to explore future possibilities in creating and sharing theatre across professional and community contexts.

Leading up to this event and in partnership with ArtWorks Scotland, The National Theatre of Scotland is taking 6 established Scottish Artists to Philadelphia to take part in a summer lab with People’s Light Theatre Company. Peoples’ Light have invested in a comprehensive training programme for their artists ensemble, teaching artists and staff to skill them up and expose them to creating high quality  professional work with non-professionals.

The Scottish artists working with the company in 2012 across a professional and community context are:

Simon Sharkey – Associate Director of National Theatre of Scotland

MJ McCarthy – Freelance Musician and Composer

Janice Parker – Freelance Choreographer and movement specialist

Rachel O’Neill – Freelance visual artist and lecturer

Martin Travers – Writer

Catrin Evans – Theatre director and activist

During the summer lab the Scottish artists have been asking the questions:

What skills am I learning?

Dance and Social Inclusion Training, 21-24 August 2012

Dance United is running a four-day training course in Aberdeen from 21-24 August which looks at how to deliver high quality dance when working with challenging groups in the community.

This Stage 1 training course has been accredited by National Open College Network (NOCN) so course participants will be able to achieve recognition at level 3 in Social Inclusion Practice in Dance.

Higher Dance CPD

FOUR DAY INTENSIVE COURSE – Monday 15 until Thursday 18 October 9.30 – 4.30pm

This four day intensive training programme will cover all the elements involved in the Higher dance course. This course is highly practical in nature and aimed at dance specialists or individuals currently teaching or about to deliver the Higher dance course. Each day will focus on one of the different techniques to be covered and the participants will learn six different set dances contained within the SQA NABs. There will be time allocated to the written element with examples of students work and a practical session on the choreographic element focusing on use of themes, choreographic structure and choreographic devices.

Standard rate                                         £70 per day or £240 for four days

Freelance artists / students                £60 per day or £200 for four days

The course will be held at Inveralmond Community High School, Willowbank, Ladywell, Livingston EH54 6HN
