Inspired? Get Writing! Creative Writing Competition 2013

School pupils and their teachers are invited to choose an inspirational painting, photograph, print or sculpture from the National Galleries of Scotland’s Collection and to create a piece of poetry or prose not exceeding 1,000 words in length. Works may be viewed in person, or online at www.nationalgalleries.org/onlinecollections

There are three categories for school pupils:

Category A School Pupils Under 12

Category B School Pupils 12-14 Years of Age

Category C School Pupils 15-18 Years of Age

There will be ten awards in each category: Winner, two Runners-up and seven Special Merit. All will be included in a public reading at the Scottish National Gallery in April 2013.

Junior Saltire Prize 2013 – designing for renewable energy

To help to raise awareness amongst young people of the exciting developments and opportunities of marine renewables in Scotland for the third successive year the Junior Saltire Award for primary and secondary school pupils is being organised.  The competition is managed by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) in partnership with the Scottish Government and SCDI’s Young Engineers and Science Clubs Scotland.

This award is open to all primary P5-P7 and secondary S1-S3 and S4-S6 pupils in Scotland. Working in teams of up to four, pupils will design and build a model marine energy device to operate under test conditions. Schools can submit multiple entries provided each is registered separately. Deadline for registration: 21 December 2012.

National Youth Jazz Orchestras of Scotland Auditions

The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland are still accepting applications for auditions taking place early in 2013 for the National Youth Jazz Orchestras of Scotland.

Auditions will take place as follows:

3 Jan – Perth (North Inch Campus)

4 Jan – Aberdeen (Northfield Academy)

5 Jan – Glasgow (Unitarian Church Hall, Berkely Street)

6 Jan – Edinburgh (Broughton High School)

If distance precludes applicants from attending an audition, applications by dvd (or cd/soundcloud/wetransfer) will be considered.

Scottish Government challenge prize fund for young innovators – 18-24 years

The Scottish Government announces the launch of the Young Innovators Challenge which will be open to young people aged 18-24 who are in their final year of college or university, taking part in a national training programme or studying for a Modern Apprenticeship. Industry leaders will set young competitors challenges across a number of specialist fields, judge competition entries and offer mentoring and support to successful entrants.

National Park travel grant scheme for schools and groups

Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park has launched a new pilot scheme to help schools and outreach groups experience the great outdoors in the Park by offering an Educational Travel Grant. With forests to explore, landscapes to walk and climb, lochs and rivers to sail on and rich wildlife and history to discover, Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park provides the perfect outdoor classroom for schools and groups.

Funds will be provided for up to 75% of total transport costs. This includes transport to and from schools or a group’s meeting place to the National Park and the costs of accessing Inchcailloch island for outdoor learning activities. Opportunity for young people to create their own social enterprise – 11-16 year olds

Live UnLtd, InspirEngage International and Xing Education launched Create Your Career, offering 11–16 year-olds across the UK the opportunity to start their own social enterprise. Successful applicants receive up to £500 kick-start funding, a free place at an InspirEngage Skills Bootcamp and access to support. The deadline for applications is 10 December.

CashBack for Creativity: Dance Fund

This new CashBack for Communities fun delivered through a partnership between Creative Scotland and Youthlink Scotland, aims to engage more young people in high quality dance programmes, helping them to develop confidence and skills for life, learning and work.

A total of £100,000 will be invested in community based dance programmes with individual proposals being able to access awards of up to £5,000. Applications are invited from organisations within the youth work sector and/or those working with young people to support the delivery of FREE dance based activities.

The closing date for all submissions is Thursday 13 December.

Connecting Classrooms: International Partnerships

The British Council’s ‘Connecting Classrooms‘ programme supports schools to develop creative learning relationships with international partners. The programme is designed to help young people learn about global issues and become responsible global citizens, supporting the development of skills which they will need to live and work in an increasingly global economy.

Connecting Classrooms offers support for international school partnerships, professional development courses for teachers, accreditation through the British Council ‘International School Award’, and the chance to share practice with international counterparts. Schools can apply for travel grants of £1500 per school to facilitate visits to and from partner schools, assisting the growth of the partnership and collaborative work.

BBC Class Clips

Class Clips is part of the BBC’s Learning Zone website and contains more than 9,000 free video clips from BBC programmes ready to play in the classroom.

The clips have been specially selected to support teachers in all subjects and areas of the curriculum; they are safe and appropriate for use in a learning context. A search engine allows users to search by primary or secondary  level and by subject or topic.

A ‘creativity’ search brings up a wealth of inspiring resources.
