Lead 2014 registration now open

Now entering its fourth year, Lead 2014 is a partnership between the Youth Sport Trust, sportscotland and Glasgow 2014 that aims to harness the enthusiasm and potential of young people to create the next generation of sports leaders.

This exciting programme for young people consists of a series of conferences that will help you develop your leadership skills, gain valuable experience through volunteering and play your part in raising the profile of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games across Scotland.

Registration for 2014’s conferences is now open. As ever the programme is expected to be very popular and places are limited and allocated on a first come first served basis. You must register by 15 November.

The conferences will take place on the following dates and venues:

• 20 February – University of the Highlands and Islands (Inverness)
• 28 February – Strathclyde University (Glasgow)
• 11 March – St Andrews University (St Andrews)
• 13 March – Robert Gordon University (Aberdeen)
• 20 March – Stirling University (Stirling)
• 24 March – University of Edinburgh (Edinburgh)
• 26 March – University of the West of Scotland (Hamilton)

Game On Scotland Inverness Event: New date – 18 November 2013

Where? Drumossie Hotel, Inverness

With around 250 days before the biggest multi-sport and cultural event ever to come to Scotland, we invite practitioners to join us and find out more on how the Commonwealth Games may provide help you to create stimulating learning opportunities across the curriculum and beyond.

The event will showcase inspirational initiatives from schools across the board and highlight programmes available to teachers to ensuring that, together, we deliver a lasting legacy for learning. The keynote address will come from Paralymic champion David Smith MBE.  A variety of engaging workshops delivered by practitioners and organisations experienced in Games Legacy work will provide practical, hands-on exemplification on the impact of using the Games as a context for learning. Workshop sessions will include:

  • exemplification from primary and secondary schools,
  • inspirational address by people directly engaged with the Games and its legacy ,
  • international education and partnerships
  • Food for Thought Education Fund around the Commonwealth Games
  • cluster and local authority initiatives.

CPD session 1: Interdisciplinary learning through the 2014 Commonwealth Games
Focus: Expressive Arts & Creativity
Tuesday, 3 September, 4pm – 4.45pm

This is the first Glow Meet in a new series around the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games highlighting opportunities for interdisciplinary across all 8 curriculum areas.
This CPD session will provide practitioners with a kaleidoscope of ideas and opportunities in using the Games as a context for learning with a specific focus on expressive arts and creativity.

Presenters:
• Stephen Bullock (Development Officer, Creativity and Innovation) will demonstrate the value of creativity and highlight creativity skills in the ‘Creating ambitions beyond sport’ learning journey. (http://www.gameonscotland.org/resources/learningjourneycreatingambition.asp)
• Ron Cowie (Senior Education Officer, Expressive Arts) will present two brand new learning journeys and explain how these link to the Commonwealth Games theme. The journeys will feature opportunities for skills development and inter-disciplinary learning across expressive arts and other areas of the curriculum.
• Simon Sharkey (National Theatre Scotland) will introduce teachers to the opportunity to connect with a major Eco arts programme that will culminate in a spectacular and high profile series of performances in an iconic Glasgow building. We are seeking schools from across Scotland to participate in all sorts of ways, some of which I will describe at the Glow meet.
• Klaus Mayer (Development Officer, Games Legacy) will provide an update of the latest engagement opportunities available through Games on Scotland

Scotland’s Schools get ready to be inspired by Glasgow 2014

On Monday 19th August, pupils at Grove Academy in Dundee were involved in a launch event with a difference. Not only were they joined Shona Robison MSP and local hero Liz McColgan to launch Character Scotland’s exciting new ‘Inspire>Aspire: Global Citizens in the Making’ programme – they also launched their own inspirations and aspirations in the form of over 220 helium balloons which took to the skies above Broughty Ferry.

Character Scotland is an emerging and rapidly expanding charity that aims to support the development of children and young people’s character and values. The charity’s vision is for all children and young people to develop as responsible, caring, ethical and engaged global citizens: people who aim to HELP OTHERS, GET INVOLVED, DO THE RIGHT THING and DO THEIR BEST.

Liz McColgan, former Commonwealth and Olympic athlete, said “the project allows pupils to believe in themselves. It doesn’t matter what people think or say about you, if you really believe in something you want to achieve you have to be dedicated to putting the time and effort into doing it. This project allows children to search at what they are good at”.

Schools benefit from Lottery Fund

St Elisabeth’s Primary and Nursery school and Cleveden Secondary School have been awarded funding to develop initiatives related to the cultural programme of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Amongst the 11 project selected so far are a Shetland youth cafe, a Highlands mountain bike festival, a north Glasgow community arts project and an East Lothian Museum.

11 grants worth £74,477 are the first from Celebrate, a National Lottery funding programme supporting events and projects which celebrate Glasgow 2014 or that are inspired by the 71 nations and territories which make up the Commonwealth.

Big Lottery Fund Scotland Chair, Maureen McGinn said: “This time next year the eyes of the world will be on Scotland as Glasgow gears up to host the Commonwealth Games. Celebrate has been created by Scotland’s four Lottery distributors to ensure communities across Scotland are able to share the feel-good factor of the Games and we are delighted to see these first grants showcasing a wide variety in what will be possible.

“Celebrate offers an opportunity for everyone to get involved with Lottery funding of up to £10,000 on offer to arts, heritage, sports and community groups across the country to hold one off events.”

Cranhill Arts Project, in North Glasgow has been awarded £8,462 to run a series of workshops with a wide range of local people enabling them to make sculptures and murals on a sporting theme. The hard work will culminate with an exhibition and celebration.

Project Co-ordinator Chris Nicoletti said: “We are delighted to have received this generous award from celebrate; the funding will enable us to deliver a vibrant program of activities while bringing the community together in a celebration of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. For many of the groups we work with this could be the only chance they will have the get involved with the Commonwealth Games.”

On Shetland Yell Youth Café have been awarded £8,000 to get involved and celebrate the Glasgow games. Support Worker, Martin Summers, said, “This funding will provide Shetland’s young people with the opportunity to ensure that Glasgow 2014 and the four legacy themes reach the length and breadth of Scotland. With about a year to go to the Youth Legacy Ambassadors, Youth Ambassadors and Yell Youth Café are all very excited to start work on Celebrating Glasgow 2014.”

Young Scot Youth Legacy Ambassador, Sam Maver, said, “We are so excited to receive the Celebrate funding as it allows young people in Shetland to get involved in sporting and cultural events to help raise awareness of the Commonwealth Games. The funding will help to promote Glasgow 2014 in Shetland so that young people can get involved and feel part of the legacy the games will provide for the next generation.”

Celebrate has been developed by the SLDF which is made up of all four Scottish Lottery Distributors, Big Lottery Fund, Creative Scotland, Heritage Lottery Fund and sportscotland . It is open to applications from today for celebrations of the people, places and culture of the Commonwealth and of the Games themselves.

Three new videos have been released to support the case study about Calderglen High School’s successful Games Legacy programme.  The short clips feature members of the senior management team and pupils from Calderglen High school talking about the impact of the Games on learning, values education and overall school ethos.
