Christmas Market Treat!

Since we were in town to visit GoMA, we had a short visit to the St. Enoch Square Christmas Market. It was really fun looking at all the Christmas gifts and foods on display. Lots of us bought sugary treats including the ‘ultimate’ hot chocolate! It was a great end to a lovely day out!!

GoMA – Gallery of Modern Art

As part of our Expressive Arts topic this term, we visited GoMA in the city centre. We were looking for inspiration for our own contemporary art installation.

Scottish Book Week Library Fun

Last Wednesday, we met Stacey the librarian at Pollokshields Library. We visited the library to celebrate Scottish Book Week.

Most of our class took books out on loan which we will need to return after the Christmas holidays. You can return them before that though if you finish them!

Emirates arena Badminton Activities

On Thursday 23rd of November,  we went to the Emirates Arena and did lots of cool badminton activities. In the morning, there were a lot of schools in the sports hall from all over Glasgow enjoying some activities like team games and doing keepy ups with a shuttlecock and a bat. In the afternoon, we had lunch while we were watching some badminton games going on. They were professionals from all different countries like Scotland and England and India. we saw Scotland v England and the Scottish team’s name was the Pringles (they are brother and sister!) The English pair’s names were funny too: Cook and King! Scotland won!

We loved the Emirates sports arena event because of the activities and the other teams playing.

Poetry with Ms O’Hagan

On Monday we did some poetry with Mrs O’hagen and we looked at some weird pictures then we had to describe what we had seen, what we thought and what we wondered.

Here are the two pictures we looked at and our ideas for what they were. Mrs O’ohagen is going to working with us every Monday to do more poetry and look at more pictures then we are going to write our own poem.

Visitors from Poland

Yesterday we had visitors from Poland called Filip and Eva and they did a maths lesson with us. We had to find out how many 1p 2p and every other kind of money it would take take to fill to fill the entire Celtic park (pitch).

We had to do research on the computers to find out info on how many coins it took to fill the entire Celtic park (pitch) with the lowest amount of money spent. On the computers we found out that the Celtic pitch was 8625 yards squared and the meters of a £5 note was was 8125 mm squared. Other info was that the area of the pitch was 7140 meters squared and it would take 15,265 £5 notes to cover the entire Celtic pitch.

HALLOWEEN

Last week it was Halloween so we  went to a parade in the hall. We also carved pumpkins which looked awesome in our class room  and at Mrs Brightman’s house. She didn’t get any trick or treaters though 🙁

We made pumpkin muffins and a pumpkin pie with the insides we scooped out of the pumpkins. Not many people loved the pie but lots of us liked the muffins!

The recipes are at these links if you want to try them at home:

Look at the great pictures of our costumes! What an exciting celebration!

Dojo points and prizes in P6/7

Lots of teachers at St. Albert’s use a website called ‘ClassDojo’ to record the reward points they award to students.

In P6/7, Mrs Brightman awards us Dojo points for all sorts of reasons! The most common ones are:

  • excellent effort in our classwork or homework
  • excellent standard of work
  • exceptional role modelling (for example helping others)

When we earn 30 points, we get to choose a treat! This could be:

  • listening to our class playlist during quiet working time
  • sitting on a comfy chair for the day
  • sitting next to our friend for the day
  • opting out of one item of homework during the week
  • choosing a prize from the prizes box
  • giving the whole class 10 minutes extra play
  • inventing a treat of our own (as long as it is approved by Mrs B.)

So far this year, over half of the class has earned a treat! Saad chose to ‘be the teacher’ for a lesson and gave us a brilliant lesson on how to draw a giant squid! He was brilliant at explaining how to do it in easy steps! He wrote ‘Mr. Khan’ on the board and Mrs. Brightman was a pupil just like us!

Digital Learning with Mr. Stewart

Do you know what digital literacy is?

We learned with Mr. Stewart about how digital literacy is about being about to understand computer programmes and apps as well as being able to use them. Just like literacy is about reading and understanding information as well as writing and communicating.

We are already very good at using phones, laptops, computers and tablets to do things like:

  • researching – using the internet and encyclopedia software to find information
  • communicating – using email, text messaging, instant messaging, social media platforms
  • photography – creating videos and photographs using digital cameras and iMovie editing software
  • entertaining ourselves – playing online games, watching videos and listening to music on YouTube

Over the next few weeks, Mr Stewart and Mrs Brightman are showing us new skills in presenting data through a piece of software on the school iPads called Numbers – this is an Apple app available for iPad and iPhone. It is similar to the Microsoft programme Excel and allows us to create graphs and charts easily.

We found the bar charts and pie charts we generated looked a lot better than the ones we draw by hand! Isn’t modern technology amazing!!
