P5b’s Class of the Month Trip

As a reward for winning Class of the Month, P5b went to the Museum of Transport yesterday. Everyone enjoyed the scavenger hunt quiz which took us all around the museum hunting for clues.

Some of the many memorable exhibits were :

  • lots of old sports cars,
  • the oldest bike in the world,
  • the models of famous ships, many of which were built on the Clyde,
  • the tall ship moored just outside the museum,
  • old rifles and pistols,
  • the reconstruction of an old street in Glasgow,
  • an old hearse pulled by horses.

The children saw a very unusual, old bicycle called a penny farthing and wondered how people managed to ride , or even get onto, it. They said it was really cool to go on the old subway train, but they found it strange how there was no seat for the driver. They also found out how spitting had to be banned on buses and trams to stop  infectious diseases like tuberculosis spreading throughout the city.

Here are the happy winners with the Class of the Month trophy and their scavenger hunt answer sheets after their fabulous learning experience :

P2/1 dined in ‘The Great Hall’ today and enjoyed a delicious medieval banquet. They have been learning about the different rooms inside a castle and had lots of fun bringing one of them to life in our classroom. I’m sure you’ll agree that it looks like a feast fit for royalty!!

Papier-mâché Volcano Experiment. Step 1…

P5a are aiming to work collaboratively in groups to create a papier-mâché volcano experiment. We will create a volcano structure, paint the volcano then make it erupt! 🌋

Today, we tackled step 1 of the challenge- building the structure…

The papier-mâché got very messy!

And we finally have completed volcano models 👏🏼…

Next step for another day- PAINTING. 🎨

HOTS Question Time in P5…

P5a have been learning Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and developing their ability to create their own questions.

We focused on the first skill of ‘remembering’. The children worked in pairs to write 5 ‘remembering’ questions for another pair in the class to answer. They then marked their answers and gave each other feedback ☺️👍

Where does food come from?

During our visit to The Hidden Gardens we focused on where our food comes from. We worked collaboratively to locate the different food products on a map and then tracked the journey of the product to the UK. We learned about ‘food miles’ and  why some foods are sourced from abroad. We came up with possible solutions to the environmental impacts of global food production.

P5b’s Visit to Dynamic Earth

Yesterday, Primary 5 went to Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh to supplement our learning about the topic of natural disasters. The location was very appropriate since it was right beside the extinct volcano known as Arthur’s Seat.

We attended a workshop on natural disasters with activities, such as building an earthquake-proof tower, watching how tsunamis are formed on laptops, examining various rocks formed from the lava of volcanoes, using magnets to identify meteorites, and making glitter tornadoes in plastic bottles.

We travelled in a time machine to learn about how the solar system was formed and how life on earth began.

Our favourite parts of the day were the 3D cinema tour around the world, the earthquake simulator, touching an iceberg and visiting a rain-forest.

“It was lots of fun.”  “It was very interesting.” “I really liked it when the ground started to shake.” “It was amazing to be able to touch real meteors.” “I touched the iceberg and it was so cold!” “I got to touch real fossils.”
