Improvisation

Improvisation is an amazing activity and is a whole lot of fun.

Here’s some of my personal thoughts.

  1. Improvisation is easy. To get started with improvisation, it is actually much less tricky than you might imagine. The ability to listen, to know two or three notes and an imagination to build rhythms is all you need.
  2. Improvisation is hugely complex.  We, as musicians, will never get to the stage where we know everything about improvisation. As we develop our listening skills we incorporate more ideas into our playing. This makes it more interesting and fun to play.
  3. Any audience will consist of listeners with a variety of exposure to improvisation. People who have listened to a lot of improvised music will prefer more complex lines. The good news for beginners is that members of the audience with less well developed listening skills may well actually prefer simpler solos to ones played by much more accomplished players!
