The Scottish Children and Families Transitions Position Statement was developed in 2019 by Education Scotland and recognises the value of working together with children and their families, positive relationships, positive continuity, learning, play and wellbeing being at the heart of transition from early years to primary education.
This holistic approach recognises that it’s the whole family going through a process of change, not just the child!
The key messages through evidence and research show:
- If parents expect transitions to be positive, then children are more likely to feel relaxed and happy too.
- Family centred transitions provide an opportunity to develop and deepen relationships with the whole family.
- Family centred transitions provide an opportunity for parents to ‘build their social capital’ and support one another – make friends!
- Parental participation in children’s education influences child’s outcomes positively.
We have been working with our colleagues across primary and early years to gather some of the fantastic practise which is taking place in this area across the city so that you can consider how to develop your approach in ‘family-centric transitions’.
Case studies have been gathered from our friends in Cleeves Primary/Burnbrae Children’s Centre, Kingspark Learning Community, and St Patrick’s Primary. Click on the links below to download these descriptors of good practise, as well as our introductory presentation from the events. We also have our Early Years Families in Partnership, Primary One Everywhere Bear and ASN Transition Pack which are all designed to support this important transition.
