Today’s Maths work

Hello Primary 4,

Today I want to give you some Division sums to do to keep you practising what we had learned in class before the school shut. Remember to use your times tables to help you. Here is an example:

64 ÷ 8 =?  To solve this turn it into a multiplication sum with a missing number in the middle. It then becomes 8 x ? =64. Then from your knowledge of the times tables you will know that 8 x 8 = 64 so the division sum is now 64 ÷ 8 = 8. Click on the links below to find lots of sheets to keep you busy.

For you Kristaps, I have added some subtraction worksheets. Use small objects like paper clips or buttons to work out the answers like we did in class.

Miss Brooks.

Today’s learning tasks

Hi boys and girls,

Today would have been the day our class went on our trip to New Lanark Mills to learn about how Robert Owen improved the lives of his workers in the cotton mills. I chose this as our trip because I wanted to show you the difference between the lives of the enslaved people in the plantations in America and the much better lives that workers at New Lanark had thanks to Robert Owen.

Today’s task is to do some online research on this subject. Here are some questions I would like you to find the answers to.

Who was Robert Owen?

Where and When was he born?

What did he do for his job?

In what ways did he make life better for his mill workers?

What did he do after he sold New Lanark?

In what ways were the lives of mill workers at New Lanark far better than those of enslaved people on the plantations in America at that time?

Here are some sources of information for you to look at:

Today’s learning tasks

Hi boys and girls,

I hope you are all enjoying your time at home and you are finding lots of fun things to do to keep you busy.

I wanted to remind you that tomorrow night between 8.30 and 9.30 p.m is EARTH HOUR. This is an event  run every year by the environmental charity WWF. Every year St. Albert’s Primary takes part in this for our Eco Schools work. The idea is that we join in with millions of other people all over the world at the same time to put our lights out for one hour to save energy and help the environment.

There are lots of exciting and fun things you can do for that hour. Some ideas from past years include having a candlelit dinner at home with the family or going outside with the family to do some stargazing with a torch or you could make shadow puppets and use them to act out a story.

Visit these web pages to get lots of ideas for fun things to do:

https://www.wwf.org.uk/things-to-do-home

https://www.wwf.org.uk/updates/game-for-your-world

You could even ask your parents to measure your family’s carbon footprint using the WWF Carbon footprint calculator at

https://footprint.wwf.org.uk/#/

I am counting on you boys and girls. You can share your photos afterwards with what you did for Earth Hour on Twitter.

St Albert’s Spring litter survey results

Hi boys and girls,

I hope you are all well and not too bored or fed up not being at school.  I am missing you all.

I have uploaded the pictures of our Litter Survey from last week to the Eco page. Have a look at the post.  This survey showed that most of the litter we found was not the usual types that we found in previous surveys.  Here is a list of the sort of things that turned up in the ‘other items’ part of the survey: broken spectacles, rubber bands, burst balloons, pencils and a mouldy pencil case, a white board and sponge, polystyrene, hats, a toothpaste tube, clothes, a saucepan lid and spoon, strange pieces of metal, a paintbrush handle, a book token, a tie and lots of pieces of plastic. Some of this was found just inside the fences of the school grounds and is probably being thrown in or blown in from outside.

In second place was sweet wrappers. In the upper school playground the number was 172 and in the Infant yard, Storytelling area and on the MUGA there were 126. This is more likely to be getting dropped within the grounds as there was evidence of it everywhere.

I am giving you a task to come up with some new ideas to stop pupils dropping sweet wrappers, crisp packets and drink cartons or bottles in the grounds.  Do you think we should ban sweets and crisps altogether and only allow fruit which will rot down naturally if it is dropped? You can share your ideas in the comments.

Teacher Daily Check In

Hello,

We hope this finds you all well and having fun!

On a Monday we will post your main learning tasks for the week.  In future, this will include learning across all stages to make it easier for parents with children in different classes.

Everyday, one of your teachers will check-in with you here so we would love to hear from you in the comments.   We will post a story for you to listen to as as well as a little kindness task.

Today’s kindness tasks:

Make a drink and a snack for the person looking after you.

In the morning, make your bed and help make breakfast.

Here is today’s story:

We miss you all terribly! Please don’t forget to let us know how you are doing in the comments below.

Home learning tasks

Good afternoon Primary 4,

I hope that you are all well. I hope you have tried some of the times tables sheets I put on the Blog last week. Keep learning your times tables while you are off school. Today I have added some Challenge cards that you can work through. You don’t need to do them all. Use a story book you have at home for the Reading challenge cards.

Home Learning

Good Morning Pupils and Parents!

Day 1 of no school so see below for a ‘could do’ list for the week. We want you and your families to look after each other and think about staying safe first so don’t worry if you can’t do any of this today!

If you are learning at home, take videos and pictures of what you’ve done and post them on the blog or on Twitter for us all to see – believe it or not, your teachers are missing you!

Literacy
In one of your jotters, write a diary entry about this weekend. What was strange? What was different than normal? How will this week be strange? Try to describe things and say how you are feeling about schools being closed and the coronavirus problem.
Expressive Art
Search YouTube for a ‘how to draw…’ tutorial on something you want to try drawing – you can find almost ANYTHING! (Tip: write ‘easy’ or ‘for kids’ or ‘beginners’ as part of your search!)
Story and chat
At the end of each day, we will send you stories to listen to/read. Some of these will be read by your lovely St. Albert’s teachers, others might be by famous authors. To get ready for the story:
  • Get a snack and a drink
  • Get somewhere comfy – on cushions/sofa/bed, under a blanket
  • Get one of your parents or a brother/sister to listen with you
Here is today’s story:

Break Times!!
It’s important that you take lots of breaks and get lots of fresh air if you can. Social distancing means you can’t go and play with other people that you don’t live with but you can go outside with your family for a walk, a run in the park or a cycle ride. Don’t stay inside all day!

Have a healthy snack and lunch – fruit and vegetables if you can.

Please remember to comment on the blog. It is a really nice way for us to keep in touch.  Also, remember that this is a very unusual time for us all so please only do what you can.  Start with a little and build it up each day!

We will post activities like this everyday for you to try.

Stay safe and have fun!
Mrs Pattie and Miss Brooks
