M for Monday! Term 4 Week 2 – Shakey Shakey!

Good Morning!

I hope you had a lovely weekend

The sun is shining again and I don’t know about you but the Sunshine makes me feel SO HAPPY! Today I am feeling thankful and happy for the good weather because it’s making all the plants grow! As you know, when I’m feeling Happy I get a little bit silly… so this morning I’m going to SHAKE MY SILLIES OUT! Why don’t you give it a go too?

Shake your sillies out!

Activity: Shake A Tree!

It’s raining bugs! Tree-beating is a great way to discover an incredible world of minibeasts otherwise hidden in the branches above.

What you need:
  • A sheet of paper (white is best!)
  • A paint brush / Lolly stick / Straw or pencil (this is for moving the bugs in to the container)
  • A container (tub/old takeaway box/jar/pot)
What to do:
  1. Find a tree or bush with some low hanging branches and lay your sheet underneath. Ideally you’ll have some helpers holding it up at the edge so minibeasts collect in the middle at the bottom.
  2. Shake the branch or gently hit it with a stick once (no need to keep hitting because most minibeasts will hang on after the initial tap). Don’t be too rough! You don’t want to damage it.
  3. Collect some of the minibeasts with your paintbrush and container and see what you’ve got.
  4. Use a camera or a smart phone to take pictures of what you’ve found.
REMEMBER that to the bugs you’re a GIANT. So be gentle and don’t hurt these tiny creatures. Put them back carefully as soon as you’ve had a look.

If you can, download this ID sheet to check what you’ve found!

http://ww2.rspb.org.uk/Images/tree-minibeasts_tcm9-406206.pdf

Help the RSPB (Royal Society for the protection of Birds) by marking the activity as complete on their page and telling them what you’ve found! https://www.rspb.org.uk/fun-and-learning/for-families/family-wild-challenge/activities/shake-a-tree/

Maths:

  1. Carry on with your Sum Dog activities as usual!

2. Play this super fun bug catching game which teaches you all about estimating (guessing) and more and less!

https://pbskids.org/curiousgeorge/busyday/bugs/

3. Or play this Caterpillar ordering game (you can challenge yourself by choosing 1-100!)

Happy Friday!

I hope everyone has been having lots of fun with the learning this week.

We are going to continue with our Growing and Living Topic. We all need to try and stay active, so here is video all about body parts that you can dance along with:

It would be great if you could all get a mirror and draw a self portrait. Then send your amazing drawings to me to see if i can tell it’s you! Since the weather is going to be really nice tomorrow you could even go outside and get someone to draw around your shadow and you can try to label all the different body parts you know!

When you are having lunch today I want you try and make a funny face with it. Here are some examples:

What do you think you might need to grow? It could be to grow bigger and stronger. It could be to become more confident or even to learn new things!

Can you make a list of the different things you can think of that you need to grow?

To finish your day, here is a lovely story about growing being read by Miss Bull

It is supposed to be really sunny this weekend so try to get outside and enjoy the sun!

Hey Everyone!

I hope you have all been enjoying this lovely weather! Some of the Infant teachers were in school yesterday to sort some work out for this term. We still had to stay safe, so we made sure to keep our distance from each other.

Remember that you don’t have to complete all the work that goes on to the blog. It is just to help you feel like you are still at school and keep you busy!

Try to stay in a routine so it could be helpful to continue doing the Joe Wicks daily exercise video to stay fit and healthy.

Maths

Continue to learn about money. Use real coins you have in the house and see if you remember what coins they are. You can also play this game on Topmarks

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/money/coins-game

Mr Corrigan has very kindly made this Nature Scrapbook video. So if you have a garden or are out a walk try to find some interesting objects when you are out.

I know we all love this book in P1a. So thanks to Miss Graham for recording this!

This is another great resource that is updated regularly for you to use. It explores language through music, movement and play!

Welcome Back! Spring Term – Growing and Living!

Good morning everyone!

I hope you had a lovely break! I hope you all tried to make the most of the lovely weather we have had.

Unfortunately I do not have a garden but have been trying to go out a walk every day! Miss Bull has spent a lot of time in her garden over the holidays. To make a garden nice you have to look after it and no one had been looking after Miss Bulls garden so there were lots of weeds (weeds are naughty little plants that grow over the top of all the lovely grass and flowers) and the grass was very long! Miss Bull had to do lots of digging and raking. Then she had to mow the lawn and sew some new grass seed and some wild flower seeds.

Here is a picture of Miss Bulls garden before:

Here is a picture of Miss Bulls garden after:

This term our topic is ‘Growing and Living’ and we are going to learning all about plants and animals. Hopefully by the end of our topic you will all be fantastic Little Gardeners!

Your first Topic challenge is to help me to grow the grass and flowers in my garden. I need to know:

  • What do flowers and grass need to grow?
  • What if there is no rain (the weather forecast says it’s going to be very sunny!)? How will I give the plants water?
  • What are Wild Flowers? (Click on this link) https://www.growwilduk.com/wildflowers/learn-about-wildflowers/wildflower-gallery
  • Why are Wild Flowers important?
Activity:

Can you spot any of these wildflowers in your garden or on your walk today? (Click on this link to download the spotter sheet) Wild Flower spotter sheet

Take some paper and pencils with you out the garden or out on your walk today. Draw a picture of your favourite plant or flower.

Numeracy

We are continuing to learn about money this term so i have put some new challenges on Sumdog for you today! Please let me know if you need any help with logging on to Sumdog.

End of the day Story:

The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle (Challenge question: What other books have we read that are also written by Eric Carle?)

Post your answers to any of today’s questions in the comments below and feel free to send me some pictures of your drawings and Wild Flower hunts!

Have a lovely day!

Fun Friday

Hi Everyone

I can’t believe its the last day of term. The Easter holidays are going to be a bit different this year but I want you all to have as much fun as possible during your time off.

Every Friday we are going to have a ‘Dress Up’ day. Today I want you and your family to wear something Purple. You can send your photos to the blog, facebook or twitter. I can’t wait to see all the photos.

I thought we should keep it fun today so if you can i would like you all to make some pancakes. Miss Graham has kindly shown us how to do this:

Have a great Easter Break!

Remember you can send your work to me at Gw18forshawmartin@glow.sch.uk

Thank you

Lovely Ladybirds!

Good Morning Everyone!

You could start today with a walk round the park looking for all the different insects you can find or you can start by doing some insect yoga.

Before you start today’s activities, watch this story read by Miss Bull!

Questions to ask your child about the story:

  • What is the story about?
  • What happened when the 2 ladybirds landed on the same leaf? Why?
  • Why did the Bad tempered Ladybird fly away?
  • If you were the Ladybird what would you have done differently?
  • Why do you think the Ladybird had such a bad temper? What was making him so angry?
  • Why did the Bad Tempered Ladybird want to fight? Is that the right thing to do if you’re feeling angry?
  • What happened when the Ladybird met the whale? Do you think the Whale could hear the Ladybird? Why not?
  • Where did the Bad Tempered Ladybird end up in the end?
  • Which animals did the Bad Tempered Ladybird meet along the way? See how many you can remember.

Activity: Make an information booklet about Ladybirds.

Ask your adult to help you look up facts about Ladybirds on the internet. See if you can make a booklet that has at least 4 different facts in it. You might want to find out:

  • What do ladybirds eat?
  • What are baby ladybirds called? What do they look like (you’ll be amazed when you find out!)?
  • What is the life cycle of a ladybird?
  • How long do ladybirds hibernate for?
Have a go at drawing a lady bird on the front of your booklet by following these steps

You can also have a go at my science experiment. I had a lot of fun doing it so i am sure you will to!

Have a fantastic day!

Good Morning!

Here is a poem that tells you what kinds of child you are depending on what day you were born. I’ve written what each thing means beside it in Italic.

Monday’s Child

Monday’s child is fair of face      (Beautiful)

Tuesday’s child is full of grace,    (Graceful)

Wednesday’s child is full of woe,  (Worries  a lot)

Thursday’s child has far to go,  (Will achieve a lot)

Friday’s child is loving and giving,

Saturday’s child works hard for a living,

But the child who is born on Sunday
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay.    (Happy and Cheerful)

Problem Solving Question:

I was born on a Sunday (a very long time ago!) – what does the rhyme say about me?

Ask your adult which day you were born on and see what the rhyme says about you! (Remember it’s only a silly rhyme and a fun game, you are all of the things on the list really!)

Today’s Activity:

The rhyme tells us that Wednesday’s child is full of woe – woe means worry. Today is Wednesday so we’re going to talk about worries.

Watch this story ‘Silly Billy’ by Anthony Brown and read by a teacher called Alistair!

The worry dolls post that I did has been a really popular one, so today I recorded a version of 'Silly Billy' by Anthony Browne. It features Billy, who worries alot, and shows how worry dolls help him.I also feature my worry doll making efforts at the end of the video! Have a look.

Have a go at making some worry dolls at home!

These Worry Dolls are really simple to make. They originate from Guatemala in South America and are used for children to tell their worries to before they go to sleep. They then put them under their pillow and all of their worries disappear in the night.

They are useful at any time – but maybe especially now as there are lots of things that are changing for us at the moment and maybe making us feel a little bit worried.
If you make some  send me some pictures and let me know how they worked out.

This week we are learning about Money. Ask your adult to show you all of the different coins from the UK and tell you which one is which. Can you order them from the coin that is worth the least (will buy you the least toys/sweets) to the coin that is worth the most (will buy you the most toys/sweets).

Home Learning!

Good Morning P1

How are you all today? Hope you all had fun yesterday!

Try to keep up your daily exercise, whether it is going for a walk or the Joe Wicks workout!

I have been working on some science experiments at home that I want you to also try and do in your houses. I would like you all to try and make your own tornado in a bottle.

The art activity for today is all about mindfulness. Have a go at Miss Milne’s Mindfulness Spiral Art.

Finish your day with some singing. Clare has very kindly recorded our favourite song in P1 ‘I like the daffodils’. Watch the song to help you remember the words. Then have a go at singing along with it.

Have a great day everyone!

Hi Everyone

Hope everyone had a lovely weekend and managed to get out and spend some time in the sunshine. I went for a lovely walk along the river Clyde.

Monday’s Exercise – If you have a bike or a scooter why don’t you cycle to the park with your family. It is definitely still safe to go to the park, you just have to remember these rules:
  • Give people lots of space – cycle or walk around them, step to the side of the path and wait for people to go past you. Make sure you are at least 2m from the person in front of you if they are not your family.
  • Don’t touch anything – the play parks are closed but don’t touch any lampposts, poles, signs etc. There are so many wonderful things to look at anyway!
  • Wash your hand when you get home (you could also wear gloves when you’re out to keep your hands clean and warm).
You can also try today’s P.E. lesson with Joe Wicks:

Art and Literacy Activity – Germ Monsters!

Can you make a Germ Monster at home like Miss Milne (see video below)? If you don’t have paints , pop to your local shop to buy some or check out Friday’s activity and make your own at home.

Literacy – Once you have made your Germ Monster can you write some sentences to describe your character?
  • My Germ Monster is ………
  • My Germ Monster has……
  • My Germ Monster likes to….

If you like you could make up a whole story about your Germ Monster and ask your adult to write it down for you!

Maths Activity –

Carry on completing your Sum Dog activities and practising your number bonds to 10!

This afternoon why not try some ‘Guided Relaxation’ with Mr Corrigan –

Story Time!

Have a great day!
