Abdullah’s Lockerbie Manor Recount

My name is Abdullah Sher and I’m going to tell you about my trip to Lockerbie   Manor with my classmates and Ibrox Primary.

The first thing I noticed when we arrived there was that it was massive! It was surprised by how big it was.  The people that work there introduced themselves then we were shown to our rooms.  We had to share rooms; I was with Ali, Aman, Muzzammil, Bilal and Hamza.  We put our bags in the room and went out for the first activity.  My group’s first activity was climbing.  I volunteered to go first.  It was so scary because the climbing wall was exceedingly high, and the holds on the wall were very small.  I managed to climb to three holds from the top, and then my hands and legs slipped off so I had to come down.  I was disappointed, I was thinking “I just want to make it to the top”.

After climbing we had to go in for dinner. I had chicken nuggets with chips.  It was spectacular.  Later in the evening we went on the low ropes.  I found the low ropes easy, but others found it quite hard. I think it was easy for me because I do lots of sports, so I’m quite fit.

Finally we had to go to our rooms at 9.30pm and go to sleep by 10pm. However, we actually had a party in the room.  Ali had an enormous black bag that was full of sweets and he shared them with the rest of us.  We eventually fell asleep about 12.30pm.

I really enjoyed my trip to Lockerbie Manor, I will never forget the fun we had. Hopefully I will come back again one day with my family.

Ali’s Lockerbie Manor Recount

When we arrived at Lockerbie Manor we all clapped and cheered, we were so pleased to be there. Our first instructor was called Shaun.  He told us where the fire escapes were and then he told us to get ready.

We got ready and went to Shuan, who said, “we’re going to do rock climbing!” Then Yahya said, “I’m not doing that!” I think he was a bit scared. Then we got to the climbing wall and we climbed it, it was huge!  After that we did a couple of activities, including paddle boarding.  That was the one I hated because we needed to use our hands to paddle and the water was so cold.  It was like snow and ice!  It was hard to stay balanced on the board.

In our room at night I had a party with Aman, Muzzy, Bilal, Abdullah and Awais. We had lots of snacks and it was really fun.

On the last day we did archery. I got a bullseye!  I felt very proud of myself.  I enjoyed Lockerbie Manor so much I didn’t want to come home.  I would love to go again.

Lockerbie Manor – Jamil Ali

When we arrived to Lockerbie and the instructor said “Take a tour around Lockerbie Manor”.

Then, an instructor had given us an activity and our first activity was trust fall. It was really fun doing it. Then we did low ropes which was exciting. We were all laughing when we were doing it.

Next we did rock climbing which was not my favourite. I said to the instructor that “I can’t climb, I might hurt myself”. The instructor said “It is okay, you will be fine”. So then I got fine and climbed and I never got that far.

Then, on Saturday, we did kayaking and canoeing and the other one was like we had to stand up and do paddle boarding while standing up. It was hard but I never slipped.

In the evening, we went to a place where sheep and sheep poo was. We looked up at the stars and we saw the North Star. They were amazing because they were so bright and sparkly!

The next day was the final day. We did abseiling that day. It was really fun doing it, everybody was very nervous! I thought I was going to slip off.

Then me and my classmates went and packed our suitcases and went to the bus. The bus went to St. Albert’s and all of our parents were there. I told my dad and mum that I had so much fun and I said “It was brilliant!”

Mother’s Day Arts and Crafts

This Friday we will be doing a Mothers’ Day arts and crafts gift stall as part of our Social Enterprise project. We will be selling Mothers Day themed balloons, pretty candle jars, cards and also delicious home baking. We hope everyone can come to our stall to get a nice gift for all the mothers out there.

Thank you, and remember if you have a glass jar at home that we can up-cycle…even better!

Language of Maths

Mr Orr was working with P7 for our Language of Maths today.  We were using different objects, including lolly sticks, playing cards and foil discs, to represent fractions.  He put 8 playing cards up on the whiteboard and asked P7 to make 3/5 of the cards black.  Initially, one of us changed the cards so that three of the ten were black; that’s 3/10, not 3/5.   It took a few attempts before we got the right answer.  Those mistakes are incredibly valuable though.  Research shows that when you make a mistake in maths, you actually grow your brain.  Moreover, your brain grows far more when you make a mistake than when you get the correct answer straight away.  That means it’s very important to do maths that you find difficult, that challenges you, because that’s the way you’ll learn the most.

So, get ready for some tough maths and amazing brain growth P7!  You can watch this little clip to learn more:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exmCR28kmZk

Outdoor games

For Golden Time some of P7 are taking part in outdoor games with pupils from other upper school classes, Ms Newall and Mrs McLaughlin. Last week was especially fun.  For one of the games we had to pass a hoop round the circle while holding hands. Some ingenious methods were used; my favourite was Muzzammil’s body-flip technique!

Places of Worship Visit

Below are some photos from our visit to Glasgow Cathedral last week. We joined up with Ibrox Primary Sevens for the day to see the Cathedral, Central Gurdwara and Central Mosque.  We learned that the cathedral is one of Glasgow’s oldest buildings and houses the tomb of St Mungo.  Inside, the stonework is very impressive – we were marvelling at how such buildings were made without modern machinery to help!

In the Gurdwara we all had to remove our shoes and cover our heads.  We were shown round the beautiful building and learned a little about the practises of the Sikh faith.  For example, Sikhs bow to their holy book, Guru Granth Sahib.  After our tour we were treated to traditional sweets, fruit and nuts.  Our guide explained that you can come to the Gurdwara at any time and will be given a vegetarian meal, so long as you cover your head and remove your shoes.

Finally at the Mosque our guide explained some of the rules and practises, such as how women worship separately from men, and that Muslims must wash with pure water before entering to pray, to ensure they are clean.  He also told us a little of the history of the Mosque, which was opened in 1984.  Inside the Mosque was very quiet and peaceful; it was a lovely place to end our trip.

All in all it was a very interesting trip and enjoyable trip!

Reciprocal Reading Divided City Ch16-19

Song Lyrics

Look at the material in Writer’s Craft 6.1 about song lyrics that were once included in the book. Then carry out the following task in your groups.

Task 1

Look up a copy of the lyrics of You’ll Never Walk Alone on the Internet. Then re-read the passage in Divided City where Theresa Breslin wanted to include the lyrics.

In your group discuss whether the passage would have been better with the lyrics included.

Task 2

In your group read the two versions of the scene carefully and make notes on the changes that Theresa Breslin has made.

Discuss the following:

  • What kind of changes has Theresa Breslin made?
  • How do they improve the way that you read the scene?

Choose one or two of the changes that Theresa Breslin has made and be prepared to explain to the rest of the class how they improve the passage.
