Moving to Secondary School – guide for parents

Message from Parent Council: Thanks to all who supported the Parent Council Halloween Parties last week, with your help we managed to raise an amazing £727.23 profit!  All the profits raised from Parent Council events go towards the life of the school. We also have enough left over from the Tuck Shop to provide every child with a snack and drink for the Pantomime in December. The next Parent Council meeting will take place at the school on the 14th of November at 6pm and it would be great to see as many of you there as possible. We are planning to hold a Christmas Fair on the 4th of December, and will be discussing this and other plans for the year at the meeting next week. Many thanks, Wormit PC

Safety at School

Children should not wear hooped or dangling earrings or acrylic/false nails to school. They are not practical or safe for activities during school time. Though we don’t draw attention to older children wearing a little bit of discrete make up or nail polish.

Are there any budding horse riders out there?

One of our P6 pupils is having good success in show jumping. His mother is going to sign him up British Show Jumping ‘Just for Schools’ league and he will compete as an individual for our school. If there any other pupils with a similar interest and talent, it may be possible for the parents to get together to form a team. If your child is a rider and you are interested, please contact me at lucy.jess@fife.gov.uk. This is not a school organised event, it would be an arrangement between parents but entering the Just for Schools league opens up opportunities and I am delighted to see the school represented.

Taybridgehead Foodbank Collection

Ahead of our Harvest Service on Friday  4th October we will once again this year be collecting donations for the Taybridgehead Foodbank. The food bank is seeking donations of “food, toiletries and any other consumables that would help with making life that bit better for someone.  We do ask that they be of a good standard as well as having a ‘use by’ date that permits us to distribute them.”

Donations can be left/gathered at the school office.

Halloween Parties – Save the Date!

Parent Council are planning to run the Halloween Parties on Wednesday 30th October:

6pm-7pm: Nursery and P1-3

7.15-8.15pm: P4-7

There will be a collection on the door to cover costs – suggested donation £2 per child.

There will dancing and a costume parade. We are hoping to provide a tuckshop as well but at this point we are light on helpers.

In the last two years we have had tattoos, games and a quiet colouring area as well. We would like to do those activities again this year but at this point there are not enough helpers.

If you are able to Volunteer on the night, please contact wormitparent@gmail.com to let them know your availability.

Parent Council Meeting – Save the Date

I really enjoyed meeting with the four members of the parent council last night. We discussed the Halloween disco and I showed them out new sensory room and discussed the school improvement plans moving forward.

We are felt it would be helpful if I shared some information about Parent Council with you.

Parent Council is run by parents for the families of the school. It has a variety of roles:

  • Fundraising
  • Organising events
  • Discussing policies and the life and work of the school
  • Discussing matters of interest to a group of parents
  • Formal involvement in inspections and appointing a headteacher

There are three layers to Parent Council:

  • The elected members – chair, vice chair (or two joint chairs), treasurer and secretary.
  • Ordinary members – people who are member of the council, come to as many meetings as possible, help plan meetings and events
  • The Parent Forum – all parents/carers with a child at Wormit Primary school and nursery – if you have a child at our school you are already, therefore, a member of the parent forum. You can come to meetings, join in with events, ask for items to be put on the agenda and speak at meetings.

We currently have four parents actively involved with parent council but we really need more to spread the work load. I know there are two more parents eager to join and I am looking forward to seeing them at a meeting. I would be great to have more people still!

Parent Council meetings are not my meetings, they belong to the parents. I attend when invited and I share information at the request of the chair. They are informal and usually quite a nice evening! It is a great way to meet other parents and get more involved with school and make your voice heard. If there is something you feel could be better about our school – Parent Council is a good forum for this to be discussed. You can contact the group at wormitparent@gmail.com with any items you would like placed on the agenda and to volunteer to get involved.

The next meeting will be on 14th November at 6pm in the school.

Lucy Jess (Headteacher)

Neurodevelopmental Pathway in Fife

The ND Pathway is the route we now use in Fife to support children who might be developing differently from their peers. the pathway puts a focus on support ahead of assessment. If you child has already been referred for an assessment of neurodiversity and it was accepted, they will move onto this pathway. If you have concerns about your child’s development, social skill, communication or learning then you will be interested in finding out more about the ND pathway.

Please click here to read about the new Fife Neurodevelopmental Pathway

We always encourage you to discuss concerns with us at school. We can help you access support and our assessment in school is a key part of any assessment process. We can identify dyslexia and dyscalculia in school following a period of assessment and observation. Other neuro-diversities are identified through the ND pathway. Not every child with a neurodiversity needs an assessment, often putting supports and strategies in place is enough. If you ever have any concerns about your child’s development, please raise them with us and I would strongly recommend you go to one of the upcoming ND Pathway Roadshows.

Please click here to find out about upcoming Roadshows

Rag Bag Collection

There will be a Rag Bag Collection taking place on 25/09/2024. Please Bring Bags into school the day before the collection date. Thank you

Anti-Bullying Work

We have been working on the development of our anti-bullying policy which I will share with you in draft form for your comments in the next week or so.

All term we will be focussing on anti-bullying at assembly.

Last week we discussed firmly telling someone if they do something you don’t like and seeking help from an adult if they don’t stop. We also discussed THINK before you speak: is what you are about to say True, Helpful, Inspiring Necessary and Kind – if its not, will you say it? This also applies to sending messages! Click here to see the visual we use in school.

This week we have discussed how our school values link to anti-bullying. Click here to see the visual we use in school.

After P1-7 Assembly I spoke to the Nursery children about our school value of friendship and the importance of being Kind, Gentle and Helpful to keep everyone safe and happy at Nursery.

PE Kit Reminder

I sent home details about your child’s PE days last week. With regards to their kit, they should bring shorts (thigh length) or jogging trouser, a t-shirt and a hoody/fleece if needed.

We do not have a PE uniform, this is to keep the costs down for parents but please note the following is not allowed for PE:

  • Team colours, this includes any sport and any team. If your child supports or belongs to a team, they should not bring that clothing for PE. I have explained to the children today that this is because they are not playing in a team during PE lessons.
  • Vest tops, crop tops or very short shorts. I have explained to the children that this is to avoid sunburn or sore falls in the hall.
  • Inappropriate slogans. If possible send plain clothes for PE – colour doesn’t matter.
  • In line with our social media and mobile phone policy, after Christmas, no items branded with online games or apps can be worn for PE – this includes Minecraft, Roblox, Tik Tok etc

If your child has hair long enough to be tied back, please send them to school with it tied back on PE days. Older children can bring a bobble as long as they do tie it back for the lesson. All jewellery should stay at home on PE days to be safe as it must be removed for the lesson. This includes earrings. If your child can take their earrings in and out themselves then can wear them to school but must remove them. If they can;t manage that, the should leave their earrings at home. If it is the first few months after having them pierced so they can’t remove them, please send them in with tape so that they can cover them for safety.

I have also reminded the children at assembly today that earrings should be studs (or stud sized) for school – no hoops or dangles please.

We are grateful for your support over this.

Dates for the Year

These will come out next week electronically and a paper copy will be sent home with all children.

Summer Reading Challenge

It’s not too late!

Newport Library is open tomorrow from 10-1pm. If your child has finished reading their six books, they can collect their medal and certificate and get entered into our finishers prize draw to win one of seven £20 Amazon vouchers or an author visit to the school during Book Week Scotland!

If your child did complete the reading challenge, please encourage them to bring their medal into school so that we can celebrate their success.

Message from Active Schools

Active Schools are currently running a volunteer recruitment drive within the Madras College Cluster, in which we are looking for volunteers to support us in the delivery and support of Extra Curricular sporting activity.
As you may be aware Active Schools Fife aim to provide more quality opportunities to take part in sport  and physical activity before, during lunchtime and after the school day and develop effective pathways between schools and sports clubs in the local community. We are currently striving to recruit volunteers both with or without experience in sport within the Madras College Cluster.
It is important to us to have volunteers input into your school where appropriate to provide a sense of belonging within the school and community.
This year we aim to:
– Increase the number of extra-curricular opportunities within our cluster schools.
– Consider targeted provision that best suits your schools needs.

Could you be a volunteer?

There are a number of different roles volunteers can carry out. These include – coaching, assisting the delivery of activity sessions, supporting events, refereeing, admin, marketing and mini bus driving. Training and support will be provided and volunteers with Active Schools have opportunities to learn new skills, gain experience and often qualifications. You can decide how often you would like to volunteer, we are flexible in our approach and we will work around your availability.
If you have a keen interest in a specific sport or just sport in general please fill out the below application form to begin your volunteering journey at your local primary school or at Madras College.

Extra-Curricular Clubs

Over the last couple of weeks, a few parents have indicated to us that they would like the school to offer more extra curricular activities at lunch time and after school. In particular there has been an expression of interest in a  girl’s football club. We are always keen to provide as many opportunities as possible but we are reliant on volunteers to do so. I have contacted Madison at active schools and she is happy to support us in a recruitment drive. If you, or anyone you know, is interested in coaching a sports or activities club at our school, please click here to complete a form. More information is provided in the form. While there seems to be a particular interest in girl’s football we are also interested in hearing from someone keen to offer mixed of boy’s football and in hearing from someone keen to offer other sports and activities for younger children. Feel free to share the link – Active Schools carry out PVG checks and offer support to all their volunteers.
