School Report and Improvement Plan

Our Standards and Quality Report and School Improvement Plan have been published on the website this week. A quick read summary for families is available here: Wormit-Summary-for-Families.pdf

The full documents are available here: School Improvement Plan and Standards and Quality Report | Wormit Primary School

Your child will bring home a paper copy of the quick read summary today or at the start of next week and I will be sending a MS Form to gather your thoughts and ideas for parental involvement.

All parents are welcome – please fill up the pews from the back. Nursery parents are welcome to bring their child if they want and then drop them off at nursery afterwards. Let the staff know they will be in late so that their lunch can be ordered.

Message from Active Schools

Dear Parents and Carers,
We’re excited to share a new SWAY link that brings together information from a wide range of clubs and activity providers in your area. Whether you’re looking for something fun, active, or creative for your children—or even the whole family—there’s something for everyone!
Please take a moment to explore the SWAY and discover opportunities to get involved, stay active, and enjoy time together.
Best wishes,
Elizabeth F Anderson
Senior Active Schools Co-ordinator
Playtime Snacks
P1-7 children should bring a snack for morning break. We recommend something that will fill them up until lunchtime – fruit, crackers, cheese, plain biscuits are all good examples. Crisps and sweet biscuits or bars are also good for a treat. Please remember that there is only 15 minutes so we recommend just one snack as there isn’t time to eat more. Please don’t send sweets for a snack (haribos etc) as these don’t fill your child up – they give them a quick sugar rush and then they are hungry again before lunchtime.

Volunteers Needed
We are keen to set up Bikeability opportunities for our older child to teach road safety to pupils who can ride a bike. To do this we need volunteers to be trained to help deliver sessions.
We are also looking for volunteers to support the delivery of out of school clubs – particularly Running and Netball – though we are interested to hear from parents with other interests.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact jamie.rose@fife.gov.uk

We will be making a harvest donation to the food bank at the service at the end of term. Please send donations in during the week beginning 6th October. Packaged or tinned foods or toiletries make suitable donations. Many thanks.

School Safety

All visitors to the school should ring the buzzer by the front door and speak to office staff in the first instance. Please don’t enter the school by any other door and please understand that children know they should not open the door to a visitor even if they know them. Nursery parents can drop off and collect from the Nursery gate but all P1-7 must be signed out and back in at the school office if you are dropping off late or collecting early. Please don’t go into the playground and approach your child – if you need to see them during the school day, come to the office in the first instance. If you come to collect your child from Nursery or from the school office, please be prepared for the fact that staff might ask you for ID if you are not someone they know. If you are collecting your child early for any reason, please call ahead to let us know. This is particularly important if some one is collecting your child for you, so we know that we are following your wishes.

Weekly Information – 22nd August 2025

Reading Challenge

We are holding a Reading Challenge Fundraiser this term with team Wormit aiming to raise £2000 by reading £2000 books. Information on how to collect sponsors will come out in due course but the challenge begins from today. Each book your child reads can be logged to count towards the challenge – it can be a reading book, a book from home or an audiobook and they don’t have to have read it themselves, they can have listened to you reading it or have shared the reading with you. The object is to raise some money for school fund and to celebrate our love of reading at Wormit PS.  Click here to find the form to log the book each time your child finishes one.

Class and Year Group Photos

Thank you to everyone who completed our survey on class and year group photos. The majority consensus was that we will stop the tradition of submitting photos to the local press and instead we will gift a free, colour printed and laminated photo to each P1 and P7 family in term 1 as well sharing photos of all classes and year groups on the password protected class pages in term 1. This will allow you to discuss your child’s classmates with them. In term 4, we will have a professional photographer in to take photos of all classes and year groups – no obligation to buy. More information will follow.

Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood

All P1-7 parents should familiarise themselves with the teaching of this important curricular area which is ongoing through the school year. Please click here to find out out more. And here to view the learning and resources your child will be using. Any concerns or questions can be directed to me at lucy.jess@fife.gov.uk

School Improvement Planning

We are currently working on our school improvement plan and it will be ready to share with parents very soon along with last years’ Standards and Quality Report.

The Nursery team are going to be working with Fife Council’s Inclusive Practice Team to enhance their understanding of universal strategies to support all learning. This will enhance our provision of ways to make children feel accepted and supported and it will impact positively on all children. The Inclusive Practice Team will support our by providing training and sometimes will work directly with children in order to free a staff member up to attend training.

Free School Meals, Milk and Clothing Grant

Payment in Lieu of Free School Meals
Parents and carers of children who receive Free School Meals based on benefit entitlement will get a payment of £12.50 per week (£2.50 per day), per child for the summer holidays.
The first payment, covering 6 days from 4 – 11 July, will be made into your bank account on Wednesday, 9 July 2025.
Free School Meals, milk and clothing grant  P1-7
All children in primary 1-5 can receive a free school meal without an application however, you must still apply to receive free school milk and a school clothing grant.
Applications can be made for clothing grants and free school meals using the link below if you have not claimed.
Children in P6 and 7 will only receive a free meal if you apply. If your financial situation has changed, it is well worth checking if you can apply:
From 3rd March 2025 pupils in Primary 6 and 7 whose parent or carer receives Scottish Child Payment for them are eligible for free school meals.
If you receive a Scottish Child Payment for a child in primary 6 or 7 (and don’t already receive free school meals for them), you can now apply.  You will need to provide evidence of your Scottish Child Payment award along with your application.  This should be an official letter from Social Security Scotland confirming your award.
Please note, this change will not entitle your child to receive a payment in lieu of school meals during school holiday periods.
Change to School Clothing Grant Eligibility
Changes to the Fife Council School Clothing Grant policy have ensured no parents lose the grant due to migrating from Tax Credits to Universal Credit.
Fife Council has reviewed the eligibility criteria for School Clothing Grants to ensure that those currently eligible within the Tax Credits system will continue to receive Clothing Grant once they have migrated to Universal Credit.
The exiting earnings threshold conditions for Universal Credit, is £796 per month. Fife Council has increased this earnings threshold to monthly earned income of no more than £1666. In making the change to the School Clothing Grant, Fife has protected those customers who migrated from Tax Credits to Universal Credit.
Additionally, those customers who had moved onto Universal Credit “naturally” from 2017 through a change in circumstances now qualify again for the clothing grant.

Next Year at Wormit PS – Frequently Asked Questions

Next years P1-7 children had a good transition time yesterday and they met their new teacher and class. I recognise that the formation of composite classes feels new to many of you so I thought it would be helpful if I shared some frequently asked questions and the answers to them:

Why was my child placed in that class?

All decisions about classes have been made following Fife Council policy which is to split year groups according to age.

Can you move my child to a different class at my request?

Unfortunately, no. This isn’t a situation in which I can act on parent voice. To be fair to all families, I can not move a child at their parents request.

Will my children be able to play with friends from their current class even if they are separated next session?

Yes – we are finalising arrangements for doors, cloakrooms, lunchtime and playtimes at the moment. We are working to ensure all children get opportunities to mix within their year groups as well as within their new class. The finer detail of this will come to you next week but please be reassured on this point.

What about my child’s learning – if they are in the older group in the class does this mean they will repeat work and not make the same progress? If they are in the younger group will the work be too hard?

Absolutely not. We provide differentiation in all classes whether they are straight or composite. Your child will build on their current learning. I oversee all learning, teaching and attainment meetings within the school and have no concerns about any child’s placement in terms of their attainment or learning. The children who are in composites are in significantly smaller classes which will aid differentiation. The level they are working at across the curriculum will not change.

My child is feeling anxious about this change. What can we do?

Change often makes us feel like that. Reassure your child and help them look for positives. Remind them that they will still all their friends at school. Be reassured we will look after all children as they make this change. Once the school year has started, if we see any particular anxieties in your child or if you flag them up, we will see if any further supports are needed.

Can I meet with you to discuss?

Yes – I am happy to meet with parents if they have questions which can not be answered by the above or by the further information which is coming out next week. My preference would be to wait until your child is in their new class and we can see how things are settling before we meet, but I will accommodate meetings this term if you have questions not answered here.

Lucy Jess
