Free Retrieval Practice Webinar

This session on Thursday 3 September (4pm – 5:30pm) will explain how retrieval practice can be built into any class or course. Presenter Jonathan Firth will look at how its role goes well beyond quizzes, and should not be conflated with formative questioning. The session will demystify the theory underlying retrieval practice, helping participants to hone their professional understanding of the technique and supporting implementation in departments and schools.
 

Checking for Understanding Resource

This new Check. Adapt. resource from the EEF helps organise these next steps into three pathways teachers may use. The headings reflect patterns teachers see every day, where evidence from pupils guides decisions in the moment:

  • Many misunderstand, so pause and fix.
  • Some are unsure, so adapt support.
  • Most understand, so extend and support.

PRD & PU Session for Registered Teachers – Monday 25 May (3.45pm – 4.30pm)

Alison Dakers will be coming into school to deliver an interactive Professional Learning session to Registered Teachers on how to facilitate a quality & impactful Professional Review and Development & Professional Update. Alison is going to cover the relationship between self-evaluation, professional learning, PRD and PU. She is also going to raise awareness of the skills required to conduct an effective PRD meeting and is going to clear up the common misunderstandings around PU and PRD. This will take place in Bus Ed 2 on Monday 25 May from 3.45pm to 4.30pm.

Champions of Innovation

Well done to Yvonne, Skye, Barry and Craig for presenting their Practitioner Enquiries to peers and colleagues from the University of Glasgow.  Each enquiry addressed a distinct aspect of school improvement that they have led and championed with commitment.  They truly embodied the role of champions of innovation in driving meaningful change.

Pedagoo Ghlaschu 2026

On Saturday 16 May, Pedagoo Ghlaschu is taking place as the Glasgow Gaelic School. This is a free event for teachers where there will be a variety of workshops on different pedagogical themes.

These events take place all over Scotland so keep a look out for more.

iPip Resource

Our model of Individual Pedagogy Improvement Plans (iPips) is based on the work of Simon Breakspear, whose well‑established Teaching Sprints approach supports teachers to make focused, practical improvements to their classroom practice.

The short video below provides an excellent overview of the Teaching Sprints process—which we have adapted and implemented in St Andrew’s as iPips. It clearly explains the thinking behind the model and how it can be used to drive meaningful, incremental professional growth.

Secondary PTC Development Programme

Purpose:
Supports Principal Teachers of Curriculum (PTCs) in secondary schools to develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding needed for senior leadership.

Target Audience:
PTCs aiming to lead departments/faculties and improve outcomes for young people.

Programme Duration:
Runs from May 2026 to June 2027.

Structure:

  • Designed for up to 20 selected participants (based on criteria outlined on page 3).
  • Includes 1 online session and 6 in-person sessions.
  • Majority of learning is school-based, aligned with each school’s systems and processes.

Learning Approach:

  • Activity-focused design.
  • Encourages strategic understanding of the PTC role.
  • Promotes outward-looking reflection and peer learning.

Inaugural Learning and Teaching Festival

On Friday 14 November we hosted our first ever Learning and Teaching Festival. The stars of the show were our Pedagogy team who delivered presentations on the subject of their iPip.  This gave staff a variety of sessions to attend which were led by peers. Feedback has been exceptionally positive!

 

 

WSCA 1

On Monday 8 September, all staff took part in the first WSCA of the session. The focus of this session was Learning and Teaching. Colleagues had the opportunity to discuss what learning and teaching means with our school and also what would be included in our Learning Standard.  The presentation can be viewed here:
