This week in Primary 6, we have been busy with lots of exciting learning across the curriculum.

In maths, we have been learning how to multiply and divide decimals. We practised using different strategies to solve problems and worked hard to improve our confidence with decimal calculations.

In literacy, we have been writing persuasive pieces to encourage others to help save endangered species. We used powerful vocabulary, facts, and persuasive techniques to convince our readers why protecting animals and habitats is so important.

For Loose Parts, we celebrated Bee Week by creating bee habitats. We used a variety of materials to design safe and creative spaces for bees while learning about the important role bees play in biodiversity and pollination.

During Outdoor Learning, we went on a sound journey around the school grounds. We explored and recorded the different sounds we could hear in nature and around our environment. It helped us become more aware of the world around us.

In art, we began our animal close-up pieces. We focused carefully on texture, detail, and observation to make our artwork realistic and eye-catching.

We also started planning our solo talk presentations. We had to choose a biodiversity theme to research and present, and we are looking forward to learning more about our chosen topics.

It has been another fun and busy week in P6!

14/5/26

This week in P6 we have continued filming our road safety adverts. We focused on important topics such as cycling safety, walking in the dark, the Green Cross Code and staying safe in and around cars. We used iMovie to edit our videos and scripted our own voice overs. Once completed, we shared our adverts with the rest of the class and gave each other constructive feedback to help improve our work.

In biodiversity, we have been learning about the biodiversity of food. We explored food webs and investigated the journey from farm to fork in a range of different meals. This helped us understand where our food comes from and how living things are connected.

In writing, we wrote friendly letters to our future buddies. We told them all about Newport, what their classroom might look like and what a typical school day could include to help them feel excited and prepared.

We also began learning British Sign Language (BSL) and started by learning the alphabet.

In reading, we explored persuasive texts about endangered animals. We identified facts, opinions and persuasive language, and discussed how authors use these techniques to influence the reader.

8/5/24

This week has been a shorter one than usual due to the bank holiday and in-service day, but we still managed to pack in lots of exciting learning!

In PE, we focused on athletics, developing our skills in hurdling, sprinting, and relays. We worked hard on improving our technique, speed, and confidence when moving over hurdles and competing as part of a team.

In Science, we explored how plants benefit society in many important ways. We learned about their uses in food, medicine, textiles, and fuel, and discussed how essential plants are in our everyday lives.

In Maths, we have been continuing our learning on 3D shapes, identifying their properties and using mathematical language to describe vertices, edges, and faces.

As part of Bikeability, we completed another session and had the opportunity to get out onto the roads. This helped us build confidence, awareness, and important road safety skills.

We also had lots of fun creating our very own “Zog Flying Licences” for our future Primary 1 buddies. This linked beautifully with our nursery visits, where we spent more time building relationships and getting to know the children we will be supporting next year.

Even though it was a short week, it was definitely a busy and rewarding one!

1/5/26

This week in P6 has been full of creativity, collaboration and new challenges!

In literacy, we have been putting together and illustrating our moral stories for our buddies. The children worked carefully to ensure their stories had clear messages and engaging illustrations to share.

In Loose Parts play, we explored animal habitats. Pupils used a variety of materials to design and build imaginative environments, thinking carefully about what each animal would need to survive.

In ICT, we brought our learning to life through stop motion animation. Using toys and everyday objects, we created short animations showing animals in their habitats. The children showed great patience and creativity throughout the process.

We also began Bikeability this week, developing our cycling skills and learning how to stay safe on the road.

Another highlight was meeting our future buddies again, helping to build positive relationships ahead of working together more closely.

In PE athletics, we focused on the standing long jump. Pupils used their maths skills to measure and record their jumps, linking sport with numeracy in a fun and practical way.

A fantastic week of learning across the curriculum!

24/4/26

It has been a very busy and exciting week in Primary 6!

In numeracy, we have been learning how to read, write and convert between 12-hour and 24-hour time. We practised recognising different ways time can be shown and worked on converting confidently between the two formats.

In literacy, we explored morals and discussed how they are presented in stories. This inspired us to become authors ourselves as we began writing stories for our new Primary 1 buddies next year. Many of us chose important themes such as being kind, telling the truth, and understanding that it’s okay to be different.

We were also introduced to our new topic: biodiversity. We discussed what biodiversity means, why it is important for our planet, and what might happen if one part of biodiversity changes. This led us to learning about habitats. Each of us was given an animal to research, and we designed the perfect habitat for it, explaining how it would meet the animal’s needs and help it to survive.

During outdoor learning, we went on a mini-beast safari and carried out our own biodiversity hunt, spotting living things and thinking about the different habitats around our school grounds.

In P.E., we have been developing our athletics skills with a focus on sprinting and relay races, practising teamwork, speed and coordination.

A highlight of our week was our first visit to the nursery to meet our future Primary 1 buddies. We had so much fun getting to know them, playing together, and building new friendships. We are already looking forward to next year!

2/4/26

This week has been full of excitement, learning and teamwork in P6!

At our Spring Assembly, we proudly performed our Spring News Live drama for the whole school. We took on the roles of news anchors, reporters and even creative salespeople who managed to sell sunshine in a jar! Everyone spoke clearly, used great expression and showed fantastic confidence on stage. We were very proud of how well our performance went.

In Numeracy, we have been enjoying some Easter-themed multiplication and division activities. These fun challenges helped us practise our skills while getting into the spring spirit.

During Art, we explored the idea of positive and negative space. We learned how the space around an object is just as important as the object itself and created some very eye-catching artwork.

We also had the chance to join the P7 pupils for House Team Games. We had great fun competing in a game of Rotten Egg, showing brilliant teamwork and enthusiasm.

As part of our media study, we watched Wonder and compared it to the novel Wonder. We discussed the similarities and differences between the book and the film and thought carefully about how stories can be told in different ways.

In Daily Write, we focused on using punctuation carefully to make our writing clearer and more interesting for the reader.

We are now looking forward to a well-deserved break.

Happy Easter from Primary 6! 🐣🌷

27/3/26

We’ve had another fantastic week full of learning, teamwork and creativity in Primary 6.

This week, we proudly took part in the Euro Quiz after spending lots of time researching and preparing our answers. Everyone worked incredibly hard on their research and it was great to finally take part in the quiz. Well done to all involved for your effort and enthusiasm!

We also had our committee meetings this week, where pupils had the opportunity to share their ideas and take responsibility for improving different areas of our school life.

In Rights Respecting Schools, we have been designing Rights Leaflets and creating ChatterPix to share important messages about children’s rights in a fun and engaging way.

For Numeracy, we have been learning how to multiply numbers by 10s, 100s and 1000s. We’ve been using our place value knowledge to help us understand how digits move when we multiply.

In our Daily Write, our new focus is punctuation. We are working hard to include a variety of punctuation in our writing to make it more interesting and engaging for the reader.

We have also continued practising our Spring Assembly drama and there has been some wonderful acting on display. We can’t wait to perform it soon!

What a busy week of learning and achievement, well done, Primary 6!

20/3/26

This week in Primary 6 has been very busy and creative!

In writing, we created spring poems titled “If Spring Could Talk.” We focused on using descriptive language, short poetic lines, and personification to bring spring to life. The poems were full of imagination and lovely ideas.

In numeracy, we have been learning how to multiply by multiples of 10 and have been practising our skills through word problems. We are becoming much more confident in explaining our thinking.

For outdoor learning, we teamed up with Primary 5 to build famous landmarks. It was great fun working together and seeing all the different creations.

We have also continued preparing for the Euro Quiz, which is taking place next week. Everyone has been working hard to learn lots of new facts!

This week, we enjoyed watching Newport’s Got Talent. A special well done to Lewis and Finlay who both performed. Finlay on the guitar and Lewis on the drums. We are very proud of them!

Finally, we continued our Daily Write. An amazing 90% of the class achieved the success criteria by using five different openers in their writing, fantastic effort!

13/3/26

This week in Primary 6 we have been exploring symmetry across maths, art and digital learning. We collaborated to create beautiful symmetrical butterflies, each designing one side while our partner carefully reflected it to complete the other half. We also created colourful rangoli-style rotational patterns and used iPads to design symmetrical pixel art in Freeform. During outdoor learning, we explored our school grounds to photograph examples of symmetry in nature.

In writing, we took part in a fun competition by creating a 100-word Silly Saga. Characters were chosen by randomly picking a verb and a noun, leading to some hilarious ideas like the Clumsy Viking and the Crazy Volcano.

In gymnastics we practised group balances, focusing on teamwork, strength and stability. For our Euro Quiz, groups created their own quiz questions to challenge the rest of the class. It was a busy and creative week of learning!

6/3/26

What a busy and exciting week we have had in Primary 6!

In our Daily Write, we have been continuing to focus on using a variety of sentence openers, including time, manner and place openers. We are delighted with our progress, we have improved from 38% to 52% of the class achieving the success criteria! We are becoming much more confident in varying how we begin our sentences and making our writing more interesting to read.

During Loose Parts, we teamed up with Primary 5 to design and create a renewable energy vehicle. Working collaboratively, we shared ideas, problem-solved and used our creativity to bring our designs to life.

We have also continued working in our teams on our Dragons’ Den renewable energy presentations. This week, we performed our pitches to our own class. Next week, we will present to Primary 7, we are excited and a little nervous! The effort that has gone into teamwork, persuasive language and presentation skills has been fantastic.

In writing, we have been developing our information report skills. This time, we chose a European country to research and write about. We are hoping this will support us in preparing for the Euro Quiz. As part of our quiz preparation, we have been taking part in mock quizzes and each team member has taken responsibility for researching a specific category independently. We are becoming real experts!

In Gymnastics, we have been practising our jumps and leaps, including the rotational cat leap and the stag leap. We recorded ourselves performing our movements so we could evaluate our technique and identify areas for improvement. It was great to see how small adjustments can make a big difference.

In Maths, we have been investigating lines of symmetry in 2D shapes. We explored how some shapes have multiple lines of symmetry, while others have none at all.

Finally, we had lots of fun dressing up for World Book Day! We also took part in a special competition where we designed a book cover featuring our class mascot, Buttercup. The creativity on display was incredible.

Well done, P6. Another fantastic week of learning and teamwork!
