This week in the Nursery we have had Miss McKenzie, Mrs Wilson, Miss Paul and Mrs Laing.

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

Well another week is almost over already and in the nursery the children have been so busy developing and extending their own learning.

So last week was a very short week due to the In-service day and the short break, but the children were involved in so much learning through experiencing  cultural festivals, traditions and beliefs. We focused on the Chinese New year through a range of different experiences. At snack the children tasted a range of Chinese foods that explored the different tastes and textures and to even try to use chopsticks.. A small display area with a range of items, pictures, books and clothing were displayed for the children to explore. After listening to some stories and watching a short educational video  the children researched out what  animal was for this year, which is the year of the dragon. This interest expanded into a group of children creating a dragon outside, then replicate their own dragon dance with some children recalling the bashing of drums.

 

           

   

 

This week the children have been focusing on a range of physical activities outside. Some children are displaying growing skills using a bat and ball, sharing their experiences away from the setting such as Racket Buddies. The children were observed communicating with each other to problem solve how to get the ball back after going out the garden area, using comparative language and positional language such as under, through, in, out.. Lots of other team games have evolved some children creating their own rules. A group of children have also been active in creating obstacle courses using a range of large loose parts. They are showing initiative to check if  it was safe, making their own risk assessments.

 

Some children have been extending their own learning through lots of different research. A group of children wanted to discover how big a Diplodocus and a Pterodactyl. This then lead to finding Dinosaur themed games on the smart board. One child researched an Octopus to which we watch a short educational video that soon inspired all the children to sit and listen to the information. This lead to lots of discussions about the sea creatures. Another possible Learning wall topic!!!!!

Tuesday 27th February. 2024  –   Forest session to be held at the back of Forgan arts. Please come dressed in their outdoor clothes and meet in Waterstone Crook car park at 9.00 am.

 

Clothing

If anybody has any clothing aged between 3-5 years old boys or girls clothes that they are happy to donate as spare clothing for the nursery we would be very grateful as our stock of spare clothing has not been returned, thank you!

 

Reminders

• Can we please remind parents and carers that when dropping off in the morning and using the car park to use the white spaces only as staff members who start at 9 are unable to park due to the staff spaces being taken.

With the change of season and varied weather  ☔️❄️🥶, please remember to provide your child with welly boots, waterproof clothing, hat, gloves 🧤, scarf🧣 and at least 2 full changes of clothes in your child’s bag (remember the…🧦 🧦🩲🩲 )

Loose Parts

We are always in need of replenishing our loose parts in nursery. If you are out and about on walks, or are planning to recycle items, can we ask that you think of us first please 😃

Here is some of the items we are looking for:

Conkers, stones, shells, tea cups, sticks, picture frames, plates, anything you think might be of used in nursery.
We are also on the lookout for two of kitchen chairs, if anyone is getting rid of them. We are looking to develop a new area in the playroom.

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a great week, we have had a really busy but fun week, here is a sneak peak into what we have been up to…….

 

Flynn and Archie put on a great performance yesterday singing queen in the garden for their peers as they created musical instruments using loose parts

Archie has been practising his tennis skills and challenging himself. Archie went from hitting one ball to hitting three at the same time 🎾

A group of children have shown an interest in hairdressers this week and have been creative with different hair styles and have been discussing appointment times and how long until each appointment.

Oran, Alex and Eleanor took some time to read outside together in the story den.

We made the most of the nice weather by having snack outside, we had juicy watermelon and oranges.

A group of peers helped to push each other along outside on the equipment, they all worked together and used trial and error to work out how to free it when it got stuck on the fence.

We had another great day for our forest session where we explored the bottom garden. The children used the seesaw, explored with loose parts and took part in imaginary play where they were jumping into the sea from the boat when it was really stormy.

A group of peers took part in the incey winced spider game where they explored turn taking, negotiating and numeracy skills.

Christian kindly brought in a book from home to share with his peers called Christian the hugging lion.

Christian “the book came from my house, it’s a good book, we were reading the book”

Children showcased their self help skills as they made their own sandwiches at snack by spreading butter onto the bread and choosing their filling 🥪

Robin “I had a cheese sandwich, I put it on myself”

Flynn “I didn’t have a sandwich, I just had bread with butter”

The children have a found a new swing ball in the garden after showing an interest in ball games, Lucas helped to fill up the base to make it stable to use.

Children used the farm sets outside where they created their own farm and sectioned off different areas for different animals.

Elyn “Cows, pigs. We had the animals and feeding them hay”

Cora “we had bricks and animals to make the farm”

Book bug came for a surprise visit today in nursery. We sang some familiar and some new songs as well as having a good story 🐞

The children all participated and sang along or copied the actions to the songs and spoke about the characters in the story.

Clothing

This week in the Nursery we have had Miss McKenzie, Mrs Wilson, Miss Paul and Mrs Laing.

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

That’s January almost over, and how its flown by. We in the nursery have been so busy this week developing our own learning . Here is a quick reflection on what has been happening..

Continuing their interest in the individual art area, one child asked to paint other things and became interested to look at other famous painters work which inspired other children to explore too. We looked at Seven Brown due to how he used lots of different colours and simple brush strokes in his modern work. This encouraged the children to create their versions of some of their favourite pieces of art work. They choose images of the Highland cow, the dog,, cats and the two giraffes, Outside the children enjoyed a range of craft activities using different textures of wool in a range of colours. sticks, glue and Sellotape to create their magic wands. Inside there has been a lot creative model making either in the block areas or at the wood work bench. One child used loose parts and sand to create a rainbow, while others created a very large and decorative castle.

              

More children asking to research other topics have emerged this week with one child asking  “how do we make paper?. This came from watching and helping the adult cut a range of paper for the different areas in the room for the children to use. We sourced an educational video that  captured their attention and others too. One child wanted to then make a big machine in the block area stating that

” We need to have lots of space because its really big”.

 

There was also interest to explore and investigate planting after a discussion at lunch time about an orange with seeds that at lunchtime . The child asked…..

“We need to plant them”

A discussion followed on what plants need to grow, and those children decided to take them home to plant. This led to further extend this interest when the children found pepper seeds when preparing snack the following day.

We used the pepper seeds and paper towels to plant them inside. The children were able to discuss what we needed to use for them to grow and made a guess on how long it would take. One child guessed 100 days, then we had 3 days, 16 days,10 days and 1231 days till they germinated. We will check up on our seeds in 10 days to see how they are coming along 🪴 🌱 all children were able to recall the process of how we planted the seeds from start to finish 😃

Our Learning wall topic is developing well with the interest some this week to find out how toys were made. A group of children showed skills to watch and listen to an educational video on how toys were made and how they are made today. This supported the children to developed their awareness of comparing items that and discussing the materials they are made from, and how they work either through the need to wind it up or using batteries or with an electrical sources.

Also in the room the children are enjoying daily yoga sessions to either relax or become more awake. The children decide what theme they would like which inspires others to join in with all the different movements and poses.

Another interest shown this week is using the Phonics letter sound game on the smart board. We have observed the children using a range of letter sounds. whilst also showing growing perseverance whilst maintaining their interest to complete the tasks well. They used skills to recognise the initial letter sound, then worked on the last letter sound. Our next step will be looking at the middle letter sounds on 3 letter words..

    

Also this week with have had a very successful Book Bug session and on Thursday morning we held our PEEP session that focused on Early writing and mark making skills. Please look out for the next session that will we be running in a couple of weeks time.

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a great week! There has been lots happening in Newport Nursery this week, here is a sneak peek…….

 

On Monday a group of children looked at the match and spell game where they had to match the letters on their board to make a word. Some children then extended their learning where they turned over the board so it was blank and had to spell the word again without any prompt!

A group of children have taken part in making a mind map for all f our ideas on what we think we need to buy for the nursery to help us learn with the Christmas enterprise money. The children came up with some great ideas like a CD player, outdoor sport equipment and things to use at snack to help us be more independent.

Children have also been creating their own story books based on different interests. The children were able to help search on the computer for pictures, print them off and then make them into a story book.

We weren’t able to attend the forest due to fallen trees however we were able to have our forest experience in the garden again where children chose to come and took part in a bird watch. Children went in pairs or alone to see what/how many bird they could spot and marked down on their bird watch sheet.

 

After finding a sour orange at lunch time, this prompted a discussion with the children and Miss McKenzie about sweet and sour food and how orange trees grow. This lead to children discussing how an orange tree grows from a seed but we realised we didn’t know how long it takes so we used the computer for research and found a video of a time-lapse of the orange tree growing over time which can take between 7-15 years to bear fruit! Eli and Eleanor decided to take the seeds how to one day have their own orange trees.

We had a lovely Burns lunch to celebrate Burns day! We also tasted some shortbread at snack which everyone gave the thumbs up to!

We continued our interest in birds this week as we were inspired by artists and pictures to paint our own at a painting station! Everyone showed off their skills as they used a range of colours and textures to get the look that they wanted.

Children have been completing their learning at home to go on our learning wall to share what they have been doing at home! Charlotte shared that he favourite toy is a troll called Poppy. Fraser brought in his favourite Power Ranger toys to show off and did some mark making for the wall!

We have had a lot of imaginary play this week as children have been using a variety of resources to create models such as stools, cushions, blankets and rugs.

Cammy and Timothy worked together to make a bridge for the cars in the sand. They collaborated their ideas to make it work and built a lovely bridge as well as a lovely friendship!

Eli and Elyn worked outside as they made bird feeders using lard and bird seed. They moulded it into shape and added the seeds and left it for putting up next week.

The Newport Nursery Team x

We have had another busy week this week and have been exploring the snowy weather. Here is a snapshot at what we have been doing this week…..

 

Instead of our usual forest session we went to the bottom garden where we had a fire to heat up some pancakes and toast marshmallows for snack! we spoke about previous learning when looking at ice where we discussed how much there was and what happens if the weather was to get warmer again.

The children created snow angels in the snow and spoke about patterns and sizes as they compared each others snow angels on the ground. Children also noticed footprints in the snow! We made a guess that they were from our garden robin who likes to visit daily!

 

After a morning in the garden, we spent some time in the top garden where children used cardboard boxes and crates in their play. The children were using the cardboard boxes as trampolines and the crates as cars.

Children have been taking time to read stories with one another both inside and out. They are reading the stories by talking through what is happening in the pictures.

Since revamping the woodwork area, groups of children have been creating models using a range of materials and tools. the children can confidently discuss how they can keep safe at the woodwork bench and different models they are able to make with no support.

Leo, Alex, Elyn, Isla and charlotte helped to create a bar graph using buttons to collect their information for the learning wall on what the most popular toy was for our new learning wall which is Toys. They were able to count out the buttons and see which had the most.

 

Charlotte has been developing her early writing skills as she uses the wooden slices with common words that she needs to write a letter for her granny.

A group of boys were creating their own game outside with the bikes. They made a chase and capture game and took turns on who was the chaser.

Isla and Sophie have been using the wooden blocks to write their names out and other familiar names to them with a little support.

Lucas has been doing some great number work as he adds 3 numbers together to get the right answer with very little support.

 

Cora and charlotte created their own drum sets using cushions and wooden spoons singing along as they tapped the spoons.

Children have been exploring the new props at the learning wall such as the story books and robot timer game.

Reminders:

• Can we please make sure that when we leave the nursery garden after drop off and pickup that we close and lock the gate afterwards to ensure our children are kept safe.
• Forest is on a Tuesday where we meet at Waterston Crook car park.
• The weather can change at any minute so can we please ask that you bring in gloves, scarves, hats and cosy clothing so your child can be outside for longer as they love to be out in all weathers!

The Newport Nursery Team!

Welcome back everyone!  and a very Happy New Year to you all.  We hope you all had a lovely Christmas and are ready for the new term.

This week in Nursery we have had Miss McKenzie, Mrs Wilson,  Mrs Laing our Nursery teacher, Miss McPhail our Early Years Development officer along with Miss Paul  who is another EYO helping us over the coming weeks.

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

We would also like to give a very warm welcome to all our new children and families that have recently started with us, We have welcomed Odil, Robin, Jackson and Leo into the nursery room. Hello!!!! 

We have started off with a big bang with some children showing an interest in the forth coming celebration of Burn’s Night and sharing their interest in the music and dancing. They also asked to discover more asking questions such as what is Haggis? and in using their developing understanding of how and what they needed t to use to do this. W e are starting to develop a small display by the entrance working with the children. If anyone has anything that they would like to share with children that is linked to this topic we would love to see.

A new Learning wall topic has just been started with a group of children showing an interest in Toys. Here are some of the questions they have asked..

“Where do toys come from?

“What are they made from?

What are my parents and the ladies at nursery favourite toys?

The interest of a Hobbit arose when one child expressed that a Hobbit was his favourite toy. This lead to lots of little Hobbits emerging in the nursery on Thursday. Some children worked with the adult to gather information and recorded this using a mind map to which we will create with them a simple bar graph to display their findings. This came from one of the questions asked by the children. The children showed confidence to ask all the adults in the school, enjoying time visiting all the different rooms.

Outside the children have continued their interest in playing a range of team games. The popular ones at the moment are Hide and Seek, Octopus, and What’s the time Mr Wolf and Musical statues. Some children are using their initiative to create their own games, sharing ideas and working together at times using a range of loose parts to deepen the game. We have also seen lots of obstacle courses being constructed where children have been challenging themselves using a range of skills and in taking risks. Some children have asked if we can use the gum hall so we will be creating a small obstacle course to continue supporting their interest.

Although we did not visit the forest this week we still manage to create a similar experience down in the bottom garden area. The children experience having a fire that included  a delicious hot snack and drink, some children stating that..

“They’re the best hot dogs and hot chocolate ever”

The children enjoyed climbing the different trees, using the loose parts to move around and roll each other in the big barrel. Some children were helping to redesign areas moving heavy soil that encouraged the children to problem solve on how they could move this. One child designated himself has the truck driver driving the tricycle bike with a bucket of soil to the bath planter. While others helped to fill up the buckets. Whilst down there the children were continuing their developing skills to  risk assessing by checking areas they were they might slip. This lead to some using skills to explore the ice puddles, recalling previous learning experiences, and shows skills to predict outcomes on how long the ice would last.

         

           

Miss McPhail our EYDO has been very busy working with the children to redevelop the wood work area in the nursery . We have listened to the children’s thoughts which they are continuing their skills to record and  display information through a mind map. They and have added new tools and included a special box of tools which the children need to ask an adult to support them in using these when they are creating their model. They have also created a set of safety rules to be followed by the children when they are using these. The children are developing their own learning to assess and manage risk to protect themselves and reduce the potential  of harm when possible.

Well here we are at the end of the term (and the year)! What a busy term it’s been too.

This week our learning has been …….

Evaluating (our learning), practicing enterprise/life skills, experimenting, welcoming new friends and celebrating!

We started the week with some requested yoga, we had a “We’re going on a bear hunt “ themed yoga session. This was very well received and lots of fun. Most of the children joined in. We learned to move our bodies in different ways and practiced holding our balance.

 

Enterprise:

We’ve been taking turns to go round the different classes advertising and selling lol the items we have made for Christmas. Lots of the older children have bought from us and we have even been able to sell to the school grown ups at either end of the day.

We welcomed Odil to our nursery this week. The children have been introducing themselves and encouraging Odil to join their play. It’s lovely to watch new friendships blossom.

Christmas Party:

We had a fabulous time at our party! We played all the games we have been practicing over the past couple of weeks. Lots of Christmas music, prizes, and party food! We took turns, were statues and showed off our dance moves on the dance floor.
We also had a very special visitor too! 🎅🎅🎅

A short week but packed full!

In Nursery this week with have had Miss McKenzie, Mrs Wilson, Mrs ]Cameron and Miss McPhail our Early Years Development Officer in.

This has been a very busy week for the children. We have started our Christmas enterprise selling various Christmas themed goods made with the children who have been working very hard displaying their creative skills. These gifts are on sale for

• Reindeer food          £1.00
• Keyring                      £1.00
• Playdough Doo’s     £1.50
• Tree Decorations     £1.00
• Cushions                  £2.00

All the money raised from these gifts will help towards the Nursery funds for any new resources etc needed in your children’s learning experiences. The shop will remain open until the last day of nursery/school  Wednesday 20th December..

Some children were busy using their skills in money recognition whilst helping to count out how much money was made from that mornings sales.

“that’s 10p, that’s 20p. and  that’s 50p”

While another child counted the total coins,

“we’ve got 13 coins”.

 

Some children also helped to prepare the shop by using their skills to mark make out the prices list.

The children have continued their learning topic of money by creating a mind map that has recorded  their understanding of money. This is displayed around by the items for sale for you to see.  Some children were able to explain where money comes from, and how we need to save money too. Some children have engaged in games on the smart board that has encourage their skills to recognise values of coins and to do simple addition to total up the coins in the bank

 

 

A group of children have been exploring the junk modelling area to create a range of different style of houses. They used paints and other decorative materials to be creative, linking their knowledge to their models. This extended to the block area where groups of children have been very creative making castles and linking these to their favourite  Disney princesses. Some children experienced using  gingerbread cloud dough which is a festive sensory experience.  The children confidently shared their thoughts and feelings on this using the correct language to describe. Through the week the children have been very busy writing Christmas cards for their friends and family. Recalling to add their house number and addresses on the envelopes. A group of children on Friday enjoyed creating outfits using paper sticky tape, foil and wool to become mermaids and other imaginative characters to further deepen their play.

     

On Tuesday a group of children engaged in an activity to size order using a range of Christmas themed images.  They displayed kills to match into sets,  and then order in size from the littlest to the biggest, or bigger to smaller. They were also displaying skills to use the correct language to describe them.

 

Outside some children enjoyed playing in all weathers especially the rain. Some decided to create model super cars. Some used the mud kitchen to create a range of different foods that brought experiences seen, heard into their play. One child used skills to investigate what happens to the cardboard box if put into water. He confidently shared his findings with others…

“It’s falling apart, because the water…. it will go into pieces.”

Throughout the week the children have been revisiting the Learning wall topic of Story books, sharing what they have learnt. They are learning to contribute to the evaluation of this learning topic with our Early Years Development officer Miss McPhail. This book will be able to view once the children have finished with evaluating their learning.

     

On Friday we had our Sing-a-long session with the children singing a range of festive songs showing their excellent singing voices  Well done to you al you for showing confidence to perform in front of an audience that displayed excellent singing voices .Also a  very big Thank you to all those parents that were able to attend this afternoon and hopefully we can arrange more of these opportunities throughout the year.

With the change of season and varied weather  ☔️❄️🥶, please remember to provide your child with welly boots, waterproof clothing, hat, gloves 🧤, scarf🧣 and at least 2 full changes of clothes in your child’s bag (remember the…🧦 🧦🩲🩲 )

Loose Parts

We are always in need of replenishing our loose parts in nursery. If you are out and about on walks, or are planning to recycle items, can we ask that you think of us first please 😃

Here is some of the items we are looking for:

Conkers, stones, shells, tea cups, sticks, picture frames, plates, anything you think might be of used in nursery.
We are also on the lookout for two of kitchen chairs, if anyone is getting rid of them. We are looking to develop a new area in the playroom.

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a great week at Newport Nursery. Here is a look at what we have been up to this week…

 

Our children have been very creative in a number of ways as they prepare for our christmas enterprise project where we will be selling decorative cushions, tree decorations, christmas keyrings, reindeer food and festive playdough packs.

Our nursery enterprise project contains:

Reindeer food – £1

Tree decoration £1

Snowman Keyring £1

Decorative cushion £2

Festive playdough packs £1.50

Sophie and Isla also got creative as they made pet toys! They used paper, string and feathers to make cat and dog toys which inspired others to join in and create their own.

Timothy has mastered the art of envelope making! Timothy worked out how to make an envelope as there wasn’t one big enough to fit his card in and created lots of them for his peers to use.

We all helped to put up the christmas tree and place the decorations where we wanted. Some children helped with the lights and some wanted to put on the tinsel! Cammy chose to put the angel on top of the tree!

We have been opening our advent calander each day at nursery! We worked out what number came before and after the date and counted out how many doors were open so far and left to open. Every child will have a turn at opening the doors as we make our way down the register!

We had another great forest session where we did lots of exploring, some children built dens, helped to look after the fire and even created more stories! Isla created a story about elves and used her peers as inspiration!

 

Chloe has been showcasing her mark making skills as she creates pictures for her peers of barbie and Ken, singing along as she draws 😄

children have been exploring completing puzzles on the whiteboard as they select what picture they wanted to do. Children were able to challenge themselves as they decided if they wanted a background picture to help them complete it or not.

Other children chose to make symmetrical pictures where they had to complete the missing side. There was also a game where children explored their numeracy skills and had to order the amounts and match them to the correct number. The children really showcased their abilities!

 

Elyn has been creating her own story for the first time this week as she reads her story out loud with an adult. She named her story The Candy Cane. Well done Elyn what a fantastic story!

 

 

 

Charlotte also spent a lot of time creating a wonderful story called The Boy and the Girl on Christmas Eve. What confident reading Charlotte!

Carrying on from the childrens interests in stories, the children took a walk up to the school library where they chose a range of stories to bring back and share with their peers.
