Newport Nursery wk 27.04.26

Hello everyone, Here is a quick look at what we have been up to in nursery this week…..

This week learning is… creativity, motor skills, team work, communication, balancing skills, hand/eye coordination, numeracy, literacy, self confidence, exploring, predicting, being curious, sharing, self-esteem, technology, outdoor learning and problem solving.

On Monday morning a group of children  participated in some  yoga activities that supports their  mental and physical well-being.. They listened and watch carefully to the instructions to move their bodies in a range of balance and  stretch  type movements, whilst supporting their developing awareness of space and others around them.

Throughout the week some children have been busy creating a range of models using the blocks either has a  group or independently. They used  a range of blocks to create a models of  houses. They incorporated the dolls from the dollhouse to role play families,  sharing personal experiences through their play.

We had some children build an amazing castle. A discussion started about who might live  in there, such as queens, kings etc.. They celebrated their achievement  to create the castle  sharing how it had different rooms. and to point  these out to the adults.

Throughout the week  groups of children have been out for a walk  to collect a range of natural items such as flowers, leaves and sticks for the mud kitchen. When they came back they put them in the mud kitchen where George joined them and used the recipe’s to created different concoctions.

We just want to say a massive thank you to Findlay’s dad Ben who kindly came into nursery today to speak about his job.☺️ The children listened carefully to the information given by Ben, recalling what they had learnt. Below are some of the comments given by the children what they had.

: “You’re whole body can get X-rays” 🩻

“TB makes you poorly” 😷

“If you get a bad cough you go to the doctors” 🥼

“Calpol makes you feel better”❤️‍🩹

“X-rays can see your bones” 🦴

“If you have a bad cough you get medicine”💊

“You can see the bugs in a X-ray” 🐛

“You can hear through a stethoscope” 🩺

“When you breathe in and out it’s like a balloon” 🎈

The children got to explore some resources such as a stethoscope, listening to each others hearts. They investigated how lungs fill up through the use of a balloon and pump, and they looked at some x-rays X-rays and  a teddy sized version of a bug from the inside of the body.

Just a quick reminder that our  learning wall is all about “Our Bodies, Their Bodies” 🫁 To continue to support their learning, we would love to hear from any more parents/carers who work with bodies such as  doctors, dentists, opticians, nurses or physiotherapists! 👨‍⚕️ If you would be happy to come in… we’d love to have you. 🙏

At the forest this week some children choose to participate in a bug hunt, promoting skills to find the images hidden around the area. Then use skills to find and match  the bug image on the sheet, then mark a circle around the image ready to find another. They teamed up in pairs working together sharing thoughts on where to find more. Another group also worked with the adult to source out a range of natural loose parts such as pine cones to add to out mud kitchen. They used a range of mathematical language such as comparing in making sets of cones  The children enjoyed a pesto pizza cooked on the campfire for their mid morning snack.

We enjoyed a visit from George’s dad Sam ,who took time out to  kindly came into nursery today to speak about his job.☺️ The children listened carefully to the information given by Sam and  confidently shared back what they had learnt. Newport Nursery week of the 2.3.26

Throughout the week the children have been demonstrating skills using a variety of technology in their play from using the smart board to complete jigsaws, selecting the right pieces to fit in the correct place supporting hand and eye coordination. To working with the adult after a short survey in naming the the play shed literacy area creating a graph using the various buttons. To using various apps on the iPad such as Chatter PIX. They applied  creative skills to produce a video featuring  singing, specialist stickers and a colourful background as well as their name.

‘I want the colourful background.’ ‘When Santa got stuck up the chimney.’ ‘It’s a bit quiet.’

‘I want to sing Let it Go.’ ‘I want the rainbow.’ ‘I’ll have the happy birthday (frame).’ ‘Look at my dress.’

Some children were demonstrating their estimating skills through using the bug catcher game. They needed to guess which had the most or least amount of coloured butterflies. Then used skills to catch them.

Outside the interest in a range of physical activities continues with games of football, rugby and tag. Also we have seen some children enjoying yoga too, along with Kodaly sessions with Mrs Laing.

Also this week lots of interest in using the mud kitchen, digging, mixing, creating imaginative play along with bug hunting, especially the worms. Some children have worked with an adult to develop more literacy in the area creating a mud recipe, taking ideas from the children’s mind map

On Thursday we celebrated World book day, and how brilliant were all the costumes worn and throughout the day the children engaged in an array of activities linked to a range of different story books. We also created a story book that captured the children’s characters and created a short mystery story of who stole Winnie the poohs honey pot.

On Friday we had another successful PEEP session that focused on Listening and Talking. Next Friday the focus is Book bug looking at favourites.

Newport Nursery wk – 09.02.26

Hello everyone, Here is a quick look at what we have been up to in nursery this week…..

This week learning is… creativity, motor skills, team work, communication, balancing skills, hand/eye coordination, numeracy, literacy, self confidence, exploring, predicting, being curious, sharing, self-esteem, technology, outdoor learning and problem solving.

Throughout the last few days,  the children have continued their interest in team games especially Toilet tag and Duck, duck, moose outside. They are showing skills to follow the rules and take turns.

Inside the children were keen to further develop their own learning interest by researching the internet using google maps to find their grandparents home in Italy. Then afterwards researching Concorde aircraft and why it doesn’t fly anymore,  inspiring others to join in too. This was then added to our learning wall topic and our shared learning floor book for all to see.

We have introduced a few forth coming celebrations into nursery this week looking at Pancake day and the Chinese New year. We have created a small display promoting this event in other peoples lives. We have provided opportunities for the children to explore more through a range of short video ,and other experiences too. Some children explored the Chinese dragon  game working on ordering and sequences their numbers. from 0-10, 20 and even 100, going forwards and backwards. Others enjoyed looking at money using simple skills in addition using coins from 1p to £2. Another child shared his counting skills from home using a book demonstrating his mark making number skills.

Newport Nursery 19.01.26 – 23.01.26

Hello everyone, we hope you all have had a great week! Here is a quick look at what we have been up to in nursery…..

This week learning is… creativity, motor skills, team work, communication, balancing skills, hand/eye coordination, numeracy, literacy, self confidence, exploring, predicting, being curious, sharing, self-esteem, technology, outdoor learning and problem solving.

Throughout the week we have observed groups of children being very creative in developing their thoughts and ideas to create and build models using a range of resources inside and out. One group worked together in the block area to create a model. They shared their ideas by communicating with each other and solved design problems together and independently by using different sized and shaped blocks to keep their model standing. After concentrating on their model for a long time they discussed that it was a holiday home.

“We’re making it four floors.” “Will we make bunk beds.” “It’s the animal holiday house.” “The animals will live there.” Through higher ordering questions they could discuss places,” we could stay when we’re on holiday”. “We could sleep in a holiday house.

“When I went on holiday I stayed in a hotel. It had a swimming pool.”

“I’ve been to a caravan home but only once.”

They continued to communicate with each other and asked the ladies to take a picture of it so it could go on the learning wall. After completing it with a chimney they then asked to see the photos I had taken.

“Now can you send them to our mummies please.”

They then  shared their success and learning home to their families.

We also enjoyed seeing and hearing about the children’s achievements from home with models that they had created and confidently sharing these with us. One child had created a model hovercraft which then lead to researching more about these forms of transport. This inspired others to learn about this too. Another had used a range of junk to create his model confidently sharing that it was a dragon.

Also continuing from the ice interest last week the children enjoyed a little experiment to see how long the ice balloon would last. Over the 3 days the children recalled to take a photo of this using skills to estimate how long it takes to melt. By day 3 the ice had all gone with the children confidently sharing the reasons why it had melted…

“its because its raining and its hotter too”.

Throughout the week we have been focusing on patterns, sequence, match which has supported their developing hand and eye coordination through manipulative in using the small pegs and boards, and the counters to create designs. The area is set in a quiet space to allow the children to freely investigate.

The children have also been enjoying playing a range of card games especially UNO where they have been quietly developing important numeracy skills along with turn taking and following the game rules.

The Learning wall is developing well with lots of the children’s input through the learning sheets from home or in general questions being asked. Please take a look at all their hard work, and we welcome any input from yourselves too.

Newport Nursery week of the 15.12.25.

Well we have made it to another end of term and what a busy term it has been. We have lot seen lots of children insentiently developing their own learning, and confidently sharing these with others.

Outside the children enjoyed creating a range of Christmas images to paint a card. They discussed colours and shared what their favourite Christmas character was. This was continued inside to with some children adding sparkles to their designs. They talked about the textures, and used problem solving skills to find the correct way to keep these on their pictures.

A group of children were building a den and several children used their imagination to come up with several ideas to attach the den blankets. One child used hair tongs as a large clip and another child used several heavy toys to hold the blanket in place. Lots of fantastic teamwork.

Some children decided that they would explore the instruments to see what sounds they could makes. Has their confidence grew they were recalling familiar sounds and tunes to sing these songs keeping to a beat.

While others have been discovering different sounds as they  used the beaters and hit the different notes of the xylophone.

Throughout the week we have been continuing to promoting hand and eye coordination using manipulative skills using the Lego  which was set up for the children to explore and share their ideas to create a range of models and to confidently share these with others. Lots of fantastic ideas emerged with imaginative role play occurring.

Inside to link into the Gingerbread decorating experience on the Sing a long day some children used their skills to create their own images of the character. Afterwards the listened to the story using the puppet, and afterwards they experience using the CD story with songs linked to the character and events in the book.

This week we had the very successful Sing a long afternoon, and what a lovely time we had. A very big Thank you to all who attended and stayed to participate in some fun experiences with your child. What lovely singing by all and how confident they were too to experience performing in front of a audience. What fun did they children and you too in using the photo booth with the different props. We have some amazing pictures too. We also had the picture hunt and the Gingerbread man decorating activity.

On Thursday we had our Nursery Christmas party filled with lots of dancing and party games.. Here is a quick snapshot of the events.

Newport Nursery week 24.11.25

Hello everyone, we hope you all have had a great week! Here is a quick look at what we have been up to in nursery…..

This week learning is… creativity, motor skills, team work, communication, balancing skills, hand/eye coordination, numeracy, literacy, self confidence, exploring, predicting, being curious, sharing, self-esteem, technology, outdoor learning and problem solving.

Outside a group of children have been experimenting with bubbles that was made up by Miss Nelson. They discovered whilst making the solution there was water and fairy up liquid . They used sports bats as the  bubble wands and  created their own bubbles. To extend their learning the boys  created their own mixture  using language to describe more or less of the  liquid or water . The boys discovered that there wasn’t enough rain water to collect for their mixture so used their initiative to collect water from the tap.

Also outside we have observed children selecting and using a range of blocks to create different structures and designs with their friends, developing  balance, problem solving and imagination. ‘I’m going to balance.’ ‘I’m a sloth.’ We have also seen children using their imagination to pretend they were scary ghosts who were scaring away the goblins.

Inside the children are using the daily chart to recognise and develop their understanding of time.  They also looked outside to  decided what the weather was and to find the correct tile. They decided today it was sunny and cloudy.

Throughout the week some children have been discovering the clay area,  using the books to help  them with ideas. One child decided he was going to make a dog then turned it into a pizza. Others seen been creative too in the art areas, block area and loose parts outside using a range of materials.

Yesterday, a few of us were individually supported by an adult to explore a new game on the PC. ‘I can explore, play and communicate using digital technologies safely and securely.’

Others independently investigated the symmetry game on the computer. They needed to manoeuvre the mouse to click on the matching image, then tick the check box. They demonstrated skills to listen  firstly to the advice and instructions, then as their confidence grew to correctly match the images. They used their initiative to make changes to correct when checked. While some explore jigsaws and other number games too.

From observing some children with animals in the sand area. The adult asked if they would like other animals too. The play then extended into the block area with mountains and a volcano with more animals to create a safari park with a jeep and people. Lots of imaginative play occurred with ideas being shared to deepen the play and discussions on the Animal learning topic.

Lots if interest shown in books and research that had occurred this week with some wanting to discover more about Basking sharks,  inspiring others to join in too. Through the research they discovered that they have hooked teeth and they swim with their mouths open. This has been displayed on the learning wall and into their PLJs

After reading Pip the little Penguin, we discussed what Pip was made out of. We discovered he was a fingerprint and some children wanted to find out more about fingerprints and what they were. We decided to do our own little experiment and test our fingerprints by using chalk and tape. Some then found a tool to look at them closely and compare them. We discussed how fingerprints were unique and our prints were special to us. We found out the names of the different prints and decided what each of us had. Hollie then wanted to find out whose prints matched her pattern.

Some have spent time exploring the tools in the water tray. They were investigating which non standard items held the most water, and were observed using the correct language sharing their thoughts to describe mass.

A group of children are enjoying a balanced snack this morning of wraps, cream cheese, cucumbers, carrots and pomegranate seeds. The children are also giving some lemon water a try where they said “it’s not too sour, it’s nice, try it” to encourage their friends to give it a go too. Whilst on our forest day down in the bottom garden the children enjoyed a hot snack of porridge and fruit to give them plenty of energy to play and explore.

Through the week the children have been developing their early reading and recognition of number words and numbers using the computer and games.. They used their hand eye coordination orientation in the movement of the mouse to click on the required number/ word. With the games, some  participated in a game of Counting sheep. The game promotes skills to recognise, count, match and turn take.

We had a Who had squashed Miss Nelson mystery, in which the children role played policemen to discover who had done this. Lots of imaginative  sharing ideas and thoughts  in their play, along with having lots of fun too. We also discovered on arrival lots of logs ideal for sitting on around the camp fire whilst having snack. Some children spent time demonstrating their confidence to climb a range of trees. The children enjoyed a hot snack of beans and pitta bread along with a drink of milk or water.

we’re have been looking at colours linking this topic to celebrate Bonfire night along with discussing firework displays or if they are having these at their home. We talked about the different sounds, how each flew, zoomed or exploded into the night. We then created our own pictures using pipe cleaners to create the different explosions of colour. We used visual support through the computer and through text books.

we have also focused on events occurring in the world around us by looking at Remembrance Day. This interest arose from a simple question on why they were wearing a flower on their top. We will watch a short video appropriate for the children’s stage and will listen to some poems and stories too. Here they are creating their own images of poppies using only 3 colours.

Following on from a current learning topic of Remembrance Day and wearing poppies. A group of children were observed being very creative using the blocks, confidently sharing when asked that it was a field of poppies. They then created an image in the floor book to share what they had made

Outside through an intentional promotion a group of children were able to discuss and follow personal hygiene routines. The children were introduced to gloves and paint which indicated their hands and germs and a tuff tray with warm soapy water. The children asked what it was for which led to a group discussion. After Miss Nelson said “I wonder if anyone could tell me why we wash our hands, the children said “We wash our hand to get all the germs off. We would get them from being outside.” “We need to wash them.” “Water first, then soap, when they’re soapy we would rinse them off.” Miss Nelson asked “I wonder if anyone could tell me how we get the water.” “We push the button and the water comes out.” This shows the children are becoming more aware of common appliances and how they work. “Then we could dry our hands.” “After we’ve washed our hands we can play or go outside.” The children could confidently discuss why we would wash our hands using algorithm step by step guide and when we do it showing their awareness of simple sequences. “We wash them after toilet, before snack and lunch and when we come in from outside.” “It’s important so we don’t get sick.” “Do you know if we were sick we would have to go to the doctors.” “The doctors give you medicine.” The children were able to identify who to contact if you get sick and discuss the role of a doctor. When asked I wonder if you could tell me who touches the medicine the children were able to discuss that it’s grown ups only that touch it. “I have 5 germs on my hand.” “I have 5 too.” Through real life play the children could confidently show their awareness of numbers through their daily experience. The group of children enjoyed this experience and kept coming back to wash their hands.

A group of children enjoyed a balanced snack today of fruits, oat cakes and freshly made orange juice by the children. We began discussing what foods give us energy which Finlay shared he thought that the bananas would give us the most energy and help us be strong.

Outside some children created their own band using the musical instruments they sung along to we will rock you. They had a great idea of watching it on the smart board to see what other musical instruments the band were using. They used different material throughout the morning and discovered different sounds it made.

Newport Nursery week 29.09.25

Hello everyone, we hope you all have had a great week! Here is a quick look at what we have been up to in nursery…..

This week learning is… creativity, motor skills, team work, communication, balancing skills, hand/eye coordination, numeracy, literacy, self confidence, exploring, predicting, being curious, sharing, self-esteem, technology, outdoor learning and problem solving.

At the forest this all the children were fully engaged in a range of play experiences. We had some children showing concern for the monster head that had somehow fallen over and was missing bits. They felt sorry for him so they helped to put him back together again. Another group was seen using their gross motor skills in using the rope swing to twist and turn to see who could do the most. We observed lots of tree climbing skills with discussions on  being safe. They enjoyed a warm snack of beans and pitta bread, along with a drink of warm milk or water .One child then began to use sticks to drum, this then led to a music wall created using string and a selection of sticks, which resulted in a round of queen songs being sung.

A few afternoons the children ventured down to the bottom garden using the space well, from climbing and exploring the loose parts,.

Outside this week we have been observing lots of mark making using the chalk and water to create a range of lines  and talking about directions, letters or numbers. In the mud kitchen they have been using  a range of loose natural parts such as conkers, cones, leaves and lavender using skills to mix, weigh and to cut up the lavender. They then created a restaurant adding a till and money to extend their play learning.

Inside we have also observed lots of children developing their own literacy and numeracy  skills through a range of different experiences. We recently set up a small area linked to time. We added a clock a other time related resources for the children to explore.  One child then helped to select some books to support their learning interest.

“Its a storm one”

“And that one got a wolf too”

The learning wall is still developing with an interest in shown this week in how the Octopus change change form, colour and texture. Lots of discussion arose from watching the video explaining and showing she children the different processes. This is now on display and we have now sent out a form and we are looking forward to seeing your responses to enable us to take forward.

Newport Nursery week of 08.09.25

Hello everyone, we hope you all have had a great week! Here is a quick look at what we have been up to in nursery…..

This week learning is… creativity, motor skills, team work, communication, balancing skills, hand/eye coordination, numeracy, literacy, self confidence, exploring, predicting, being curious, sharing, self-esteem, technology, outdoor learning and problem solving.

In all weather conditions this week  outside we have observed the children engaging in a variety of role play scenarios where they have assume roles from the world around them. We have seen lots of sharing, and listening to others ideas and lots of detailed descriptive language being used to describe what the items of loose parts are being used for We have seen pirates and treasure maps where a group used their mark making skills to create their maps. Some children have been using skills to investigate and explore to create the best solution in creating a ramp for a truck to go down. While others were seen exploring the flow of water  and how far it would go by pushing it.

Some children asked to go to the bottom garden to explore the environment. We observed lots of skills to climb,  independently developing their awareness to risk asses on being safe while  in the trees. Some explored the large pipes, using skills to push, roll, using a range of  descriptive language and make comparisons. A group shared their knowledge of not to touch or eat anything found outside after discovering a large group of mushrooms.

“You don’t eat them because they might be poisonous, and they can make you poorly”.

Inside our Learning wall topic of animals and sea life is slowly developing with more children now becoming more engaged and are sharing their work and ideas, thoughts to it. We have had one child sharing his favourite books and drawing a picture of his favourite character. Another after asking a question if Star fish are real, completed some research on this and  shared her learning to others

” they live in all the seas”,

“they like being on their own, they’re grumpy”

After an initial interest in shadows after reading the story of the Gruffalo’s child, the adult supported a child to create an area to investigate more shadows through using a book, torch and dark pieces of material. They used skills to find the solution to recreate a shadow, inspiring others to experience this too. This lead to the children using a book to explore other experiments they could experience. The resources were left out to allow the children to independently explore throughout the week.

“The shadow doesn’t work if you point the torch down”

“You have to point it up”

One child outside in the sun noticed that his shadow….

“it looks really tall”

At snack the children worked with the adult to make freshly squeezed orange juice. They demonstrated skills to cut, squeeze, sieve and pour using a range to utensils that sparked conversations on why we need fruit, and less of unhealthy foods. They shared their knowledge, linking personal experiences at from home.

“We could lemons, they are sour”

“Apple juice too”

“I would like apple juice, or bananas”.

The children have been really creative whilst sharing their feelings about being at nursery. They have created images of themselves using  oil pastels and a mirror. The discussions also included their knowledge of facial features and body parts, but also how we similar and different  but we’re the same too. These will be displayed in the dining hall for the children to share with others around.

At the play dough table some children helped to create tje rules of making the dough, showing how many spoons, squirts of water and oil is required, along with creating signs to support their use.

We have observed their use of the water and sand areas, displaying skills htrough their play to pur and talk about which holds more or less, and using the scales to describe the weight. In the sand  area inside and out the children have been creative using a range of natural resources to make cakes and ice cream, along with exploring what happens if they add water to the sand. Lots of descriptive language, and predictions arose from the children when engaged in dialogue with the adults.

Outside the children have spent long periods rengage in a range of activities from den making, using the range of large loose parts  to demonstrating their growing skills in using the pedal and balance bikes. They have explored the mud kitchen area to create a range of cookies and cakes. Some children have returned to previous learning of bugs and having been on the hunt finding a caterpillar in the leaves.

At snack they have enjoyed a range of fruit and vegetables, crackers and wraps etc and are developing their recognition of a free flow snack routine. At lunch they are developing their independent skills in collecting their lunch and to clear away afterwards .

Yesterday a group enjoyed a dance session displaying skills to follow a sequence of movements and following instructions, then some showed skills to stretch their bodies through yoga.
