Newport Nursery week 13.5.24

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

What a week we have had with all the lovely weather which the children have all enjoyed playing in especially getting a lovely fruit shoot ice pop which they have all requested getting some more and to make their own using fruit and water.

This week the children have once again enjoyed the visit from their Bubbies having lots of fun together throughout Thursday and Friday morning..

Outside the focus was on individual Sunflower planting activity for the children to eventually take home to plant in their garden or in large pots. Lots of discussions that demonstrate their understanding of how to care and nurture these to grow. This then inspired the children to recall the need to water all the plants throughout the nursery garden through the week.

On Wednesday afternoon the children enjoyed a visit to a Cello music lesson that the older children participate in. They listen extremely well with interest to what the music teacher was telling them about the Cello and the Violin and answered a range of questions too about the differences and the the loud that these instruments make. They were able to recognise the different tunes and joined in to sing along to these. The music interest continue with a group of girls creating a dance show to a range of different tunes outside.

Inside some children showed an interest to learn more about the black jaguars and panthers that inspired others to research a topic on Monkeys. They looked at the largest and the smallest monkey, then discovering  that there is also a Owl monkey that has very large eyes and it comes out at night too.

Forest went extremely well this week with the children enjoying a snack of pancakes with either jam or honey, along with their favourite hot chocolate. Whilst there they engaged in a spinning experiment to see what happens to their bodies after spinning around in a fast movement. Lots of giggles after falling to the ground and they could describe how their bodies felt after the exercise.

On Thursday the children enjoyed a visit from Morag Hood who has written many children’s books, one such one is called Dig, Dig, Digger which they especially enjoyed listening too. Afterwards they participated in a drawing lesson to draw a character from one of her books.

This morning the children released 4 of the butterflies down in the bottom garden, but we still have one left which was the last to hatch that is still needing a bit more care.

Inside we have seen some great imaginative role play using loose parts and material to create a wonderful sea world after creating paper doll mermaids . This interest is still on going and will be supported to continue and extend this interest through other learning activities.

In Nursery next week.

Newport Nursery week 29.04.20

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

This week in Nursery we have had Miss McKenzie, Mrs Wilson, and Mrs McNeil.

This week has flown by and all the children have  enjoyed being outside having  lots of fun in  the great weather we have had this week.

A group of children spent time creating a planting area within the large tyre. They used carboard to  line the bottom and taking turns each helped to fill with soil. They then helped to sow a range of seeds to attract butterflies and bees. They confidently discussed how to care for these and discussed whether the caterpillars will stay here when they have become butterflies. They then discussed what else they could plant in there after looking through the seed packets they selected some sunflowers. One child was able to describe….

“There are big sunflowers and little ones, look”

Throughout the week the children have recalled the need to water and check on their process and share their findings. This planting interest continues with the children filling smaller wellie boot pots pots with seeds too..

Outside the children have been developing their hand and eye co-ordination skills through a range of activities. The swing ball is still very popular along with playing tennis and the new ball catch game.  The children are also enjoying the large snakes and ladders game, following the rules of the game and in taking turns.

Inside we have been observing lots of children confidently sharing  what they have tried, what they have been doing and sharing their learning. One child previously said that he didn’t like porridge, but he tried it with jam and honey and said..

“I loved it”

Some have been showing their growing skills in letter recognition and simple word formations. with some displaying their skills to copy letters and words.  While others have been busy creating a range of models using the Lego and sharing their ideas well. Through the Caterpillar lifecycle process we are also looking at symmetry, and finding symmetry in their environment through a range of experiences such as focus painting the different butterflies found in Scotland, and when outside or at the forest. A group of children after looking at a bird book decided to research a Peregrine falcon, and created some lovely pictures of these birds.

One child showed great courage and determination to succeed in using the peddle bike. She fell off many times but quickly got back on to succeed. Well done Chloe!

In the forest our new children really enjoyed the experience exploring and challenging themselves in the environment. Some children continued their interest in the flowers growing around them from a previous visit. So with the adult they went to investigate their progress taking phots and discussing various that they could see. features.

The Butterflies are growing fast and they are not so small now with the children investigating the process of the lifecycle and sharing with others what they know. The caterpillars are now entering the stage and making their cocoon. So we shall wait and see what next week  has happened.

The music learning wall is still on going with children creating their own bands and asking to listen to a range of different styles of music. This week we had the Harry Potter soundtrack music and classical relaxing sounds being played.

In Nursery next week.

Newport Nursery wk 15.04.24

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

This week in Nursery we have had Miss McKenzie, Mrs Wilson, Mrs Laing our Nursery teacher and Mrs McNeil.

Welcome back everyone after the Easter holiday. We hope you all had a lovely break!!!  We are also welcoming  this week  Gregor and Lachlan and their families to Newport Nursery this week too.  Hello  and welcome to Newport Nursery.

This week the children have settled back into the nursery environment and have continued to develop their learning interests. Outside a group of children created a large hopscotch  design and used skills to hop, jump and balance whilst moving their bodies at speed. They first needed to problem solve on the design, then displayed skills to share ideas, turn takes make changes. They then decided on how many jumps, counting jumps and numbers on the way.

Also outside the children engaged around the sand tray to create an ice cream parlour. Lots of imagination arose with the children using a range of language to describe the ice cream, flavours etc. This extended into developing their numeracy money skills that showed a growing awareness of the different values of coins, notes and other methods of payment creating a shop with a till and money, labels and a price list/menu board.

Down in the bottom garden the children used a range of equipment to further develop their skills to kick and catch a- ball, showing their developing football and tennis skills.  Once again team games are still very popular at the moment with What’s the time Mr Wolf with the children using the dice to see what  and how many steps they needed to take. Another game of Dodge ball was mentioned with the children discussing with the adult the rules of the game and how to be safe whilst playing this outside.

The Learning wall interest in music has returned with lots of questions about the different styles of music through the decades. They have been recalling songs and enjoyed dancing, and singing along to these tunes that has inspired others to participate sharing their thoughts. We looked at Punk rock through Billy Idol and how they dressed. We also listen to a range of different tunes from the 50’s up until the present day. If you would like to share your favourite music it would be most welcome, or if you have a particular skill playing a musical instrument we would love to see your performance…..

In the block area the children have been very busy creating a range of models and sharing their knowledge with the adults about famous structures and building in the world. In the woodwork bench we have seen children creating their own mobile phone and calculators that included a range of functions.

Lots of interest using the smart board showing skills to estimate how many bongs they heard, then matching this to the number. Fantastic response from the children who then asked for more challenges which inspired others to join in also. We had number sequences, make your own tunes and a selection of letter games to find the missing sound.

Well another week is almost over already and in the nursery the children have been so busy developing and extending their own learning.

Outside the children have been developing their skills to design and create and range of models that r appear in their world around them. We have seen some children creating a bed to lie down on using blocks and materials, stating that

“It’s my comfy bed”.

We have seen outside children showing skills to problem solve using a range of materials, then discussing that they felt it wasn’t strong and they needed to make it stronger. So he made changes and added more items to his design.

In the art area we have seen more creative designs using a range of junk, glue, paint and a range of decorative materials. We have seen volcanoes, treasure chests, and even very tall structures that incorporated different types of junk to see how much he could add to it.

In the forest using the natural loose parts around we saw one child creating  a dinosaur world using the pine cones and sticks. Some children were seen collecting a range of berries to leave for the birds and other animals to have a picnic. They were able to share that ..

“You don’t eat the berries cause they will make you really sick, but its ok for the birds and animals”.

They were eager to share their understanding of not to eat certain foods after listening to the rules of being safe in the forest.. The children enjoyed a hot snack of a hot dog and  a hot chocolate drink alongside side the fire. Afterwards they enjoyed eating their picnic lunch that arrived in little blue boxes from the school.

Once again the children presented the forest variety show that show cased their developing talents to perform in front of an audience.

Also this week the children have been very busy developing their letter sound recognition and mark making skills naturally in their play.  One child created her images of two dolls called Raspberry and Strawberry  that she had made at home and shared these at nursery to work with the adult to create a story about these characters. This was seen when another child enjoyed creating his story of Sonic, sharing this very imaginative story with all his peers around him. Some children have enjoyed sharing a picnic with the Reading Rabbit having fun making pretend sandwiches and having a pot of tea whilst listening to a story.

We have observed a group of children engaged with the letter/word games  creating a variety of words that are familiar to them or in using the word cards with the images. Some especially enjoying playing the letter sound Bingo game.

In the snack area lots of children are developing their manipulative skills through helping to prepare snack by cutting up the fruit and vegetables, or in making their own sandwiches using skills to spread..

Today the children enjoyed participating in the Red Nose day and enjoyed being involved in some fun red nose activities too. Thank you for your kind donations to this very important event today.

Week beginning 4th March 2024

Hi Everyone, here is a little bit about what we have been up to this week in the nursery…

by Miss Paul

This week the children and staff celebrated World Book Day! We had a range of different characters and it was great to see everyone in their costumes. Some children chose to bring in a story book too and we spent lots of time reading these throughout the day with friends and staff, developing our literacy, sharing home experiences and our social skills.

Another key focus this week has been outdoor planting and gardening. Some of the children helped staff to plant wildflower seeds to create our own biodiversity garden area. The children involved got stuck in and asked lots of brilliant questions throughout, showing great interest. Planting and caring for our nursery environment provides the children with great skills and knowledge about their planet.

We have continued our ongoing focus of spring and Easter by adding some spring / Easter themed resources to our nursery room and outdoor space as lots of children have been speaking lots about the upcoming season. Some of the children were very interested in the daffodil flowers and some lovely pictures have already been created from them!

This week at forest we all had a brilliant time exploring and developing lots of different skills. Some of the children were very interested in making their own ‘fires’ using natural loose parts found around the garden. Others, used loose parts and natural resources to create their own dinosaur world. We saw lots of great tree climbing too, ensuring we were safe throughout. These skills encourage our resourcefulness, imagination and creativity outdoors.

The children showed interest in a new board game which involved numeracy and literacy skills. The children were able to take turns and worked on their number recognition and shape matching skills.

Dinosaurs invaded the nursery garden as children invented their own small world area using material and loose parts and demonstrated role playing skills as they invited others to join and used their imagination.

Reminders :

  • Forest is on a Tuesday where we will meet at Waterstone Crook car park between 9:00am-9:15am then head up to the forest location behind Forgan Arts Centre. Please dress your child in lots of lovely warm clothing, it’s better to have too much than too little, we can always remove layers if they get too hot.
  • The book fair is open to families on Tuesday 12th March and Wednesday 13th March to nursery families after 3:00pm
  • Parent chats commence on Monday 11th March, please get in touch if you would like a time slot with your childs keyworker
  • Bookbug will be on Monday 11th March from 2:15pm in the huts instead of the hall for a  calming space, please join us if you can make it

Have a great weekend everybody! 😁

Newport Nursery wk 19.02.23.

This week in the Nursery we have had Miss McKenzie, Mrs Wilson, Miss Paul and Mrs Laing.

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

Well another week is almost over already and in the nursery the children have been so busy developing and extending their own learning.

So last week was a very short week due to the In-service day and the short break, but the children were involved in so much learning through experiencing  cultural festivals, traditions and beliefs. We focused on the Chinese New year through a range of different experiences. At snack the children tasted a range of Chinese foods that explored the different tastes and textures and to even try to use chopsticks.. A small display area with a range of items, pictures, books and clothing were displayed for the children to explore. After listening to some stories and watching a short educational video  the children researched out what  animal was for this year, which is the year of the dragon. This interest expanded into a group of children creating a dragon outside, then replicate their own dragon dance with some children recalling the bashing of drums.

This week the children have been focusing on a range of physical activities outside. Some children are displaying growing skills using a bat and ball, sharing their experiences away from the setting such as Racket Buddies. The children were observed communicating with each other to problem solve how to get the ball back after going out the garden area, using comparative language and positional language such as under, through, in, out.. Lots of other team games have evolved some children creating their own rules. A group of children have also been active in creating obstacle courses using a range of large loose parts. They are showing initiative to check if  it was safe, making their own risk assessments.

Some children have been extending their own learning through lots of different research. A group of children wanted to discover how big a Diplodocus and a Pterodactyl. This then lead to finding Dinosaur themed games on the smart board. One child researched an Octopus to which we watch a short educational video that soon inspired all the children to sit and listen to the information. This lead to lots of discussions about the sea creatures. Another possible Learning wall topic!!!!!

Dates to remember.

Tuesday 27th February. 2024  –   Forest session to be held at the back of Forgan arts. Please come dressed in their outdoor clothes and meet in Waterstone Crook car park at 9.00 am.

Newport Nursery Newsletter week of 29.01.24

This week in the Nursery we have had Miss McKenzie, Mrs Wilson, Miss Paul and Mrs Laing.

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

That’s January almost over, and how its flown by. We in the nursery have been so busy this week developing our own learning . Here is a quick reflection on what has been happening..

Continuing their interest in the individual art area, one child asked to paint other things and became interested to look at other famous painters work which inspired other children to explore too. We looked at Seven Brown due to how he used lots of different colours and simple brush strokes in his modern work. This encouraged the children to create their versions of some of their favourite pieces of art work. They choose images of the Highland cow, the dog,, cats and the two giraffes, Outside the children enjoyed a range of craft activities using different textures of wool in a range of colours. sticks, glue and Sellotape to create their magic wands. Inside there has been a lot creative model making either in the block areas or at the wood work bench. One child used loose parts and sand to create a rainbow, while others created a very large and decorative castle.

More children asking to research other topics have emerged this week with one child asking  “how do we make paper?. This came from watching and helping the adult cut a range of paper for the different areas in the room for the children to use. We sourced an educational video that  captured their attention and others too. One child wanted to then make a big machine in the block area stating that

” We need to have lots of space because its really big”.

There was also interest to explore and investigate planting after a discussion at lunch time about an orange with seeds that at lunchtime . The child asked…..

“We need to plant them”

A discussion followed on what plants need to grow, and those children decided to take them home to plant. This led to further extend this interest when the children found pepper seeds when preparing snack the following day.

We used the pepper seeds and paper towels to plant them inside. The children were able to discuss what we needed to use for them to grow and made a guess on how long it would take. One child guessed 100 days, then we had 3 days, 16 days,10 days and 1231 days till they germinated. We will check up on our seeds in 10 days to see how they are coming along 🪴 🌱 all children were able to recall the process of how we planted the seeds from start to finish 😃

“you need to put water on them”

“they need to stay warm”

“the paper towel is all wet”

“my seeds are all in the middle”

“peppers come from the seeds in the ground”

Our Learning wall topic is developing well with the interest some this week to find out how toys were made. A group of children showed skills to watch and listen to an educational video on how toys were made and how they are made today. This supported the children to developed their awareness of comparing items that and discussing the materials they are made from, and how they work either through the need to wind it up or using batteries or with an electrical sources.

“Oh! that’s wood”

“why has that teddy got straw in its tummy”

2my mummy can sew, and me too”

“That Robot is metal, I have one of those but i think its meta a Transformers” “Its got lights and they need batteries”

Also in the room the children are enjoying daily yoga sessions to either relax or become more awake. The children decide what theme they would like which inspires others to join in with all the different movements and poses.

Another interest shown this week is using the Phonics letter sound game on the smart board. Newport Nursery week 4th-12th January 2024.

Welcome back everyone!  and a very Happy New Year to you all.  We hope you all had a lovely Christmas and are ready for the new term.

This week in Nursery we have had Miss McKenzie, Mrs Wilson,  Mrs Laing our Nursery teacher, Miss McPhail our Early Years Development officer along with Miss Paul  who is another EYO helping us over the coming weeks.

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

We would also like to give a very warm welcome to all our new children and families that have recently started with us, We have welcomed Odil, Robin, Jackson and Leo into the nursery room. Hello!!!!

We have started off with a big bang with some children showing an interest in the forth coming celebration of Burn’s Night and sharing their interest in the music and dancing. They also asked to discover more asking questions such as what is Haggis? and in using their developing understanding of how and what they needed t to use to do this. W e are starting to develop a small display by the entrance working with the children. If anyone has anything that they would like to share with children that is linked to this topic we would love to see.

A new Learning wall topic has just been started with a group of children showing an interest in Toys. Here are some of the questions they have asked..

“Where do toys come from?

“What are they made from?

What are my parents and the ladies at nursery favourite toys?

The interest of a Hobbit arose when one child expressed that a Hobbit was his favourite toy. This lead to lots of little Hobbits emerging in the nursery on Thursday. Some children worked with the adult to gather information and recorded this using a mind map to which we will create with them a simple bar graph to display their findings. This came from one of the questions asked by the children. The children showed confidence to ask all the adults in the school, enjoying time visiting all the different rooms.

Outside the children have continued their interest in playing a range of team games. The popular ones at the moment are Hide and Seek, Octopus, and What’s the time Mr Wolf and Musical statues. Some children are using their initiative to create their own games, sharing ideas and working together at times using a range of loose parts to deepen the game. We have also seen lots of obstacle courses being constructed where children have been challenging themselves using a range of skills and in taking risks. Some children have asked if we can use the gum hall so we will be creating a small obstacle course to continue supporting their interest.

Although we did not visit the forest this week we still manage to create a similar experience down in the bottom garden area. The children experience having a fire that included  a delicious hot snack and drink, some children stating that..

“They’re the best hot dogs and hot chocolate ever”

The children enjoyed climbing the different trees, using the loose parts to move around and roll each other in the big barrel. Some children were helping to redesign areas moving heavy soil that encouraged the children to problem solve on how they could move this. One child designated himself has the truck driver driving the tricycle bike with a bucket of soil to the bath planter. While others helped to fill up the buckets. Whilst down there the children were continuing their developing skills to  risk assessing by checking areas they were they might slip. This lead to some using skills to explore the ice puddles, recalling previous learning experiences, and shows skills to predict outcomes on how long the ice would last.

Miss McPhail our EYDO has been very busy working with the children to redevelop the wood work area in the nursery . We have listened to the children’s thoughts which they are continuing their skills to record and  display information through a mind map. They and have added new tools and included a special box of tools which the children need to ask an adult to support them in using these when they are creating their model. They have also created a set of safety rules to be followed by the children when they are using these. The children are developing their own learning to assess and manage risk to protect themselves and reduce the potential  of harm when possible.
