Block Two (January – April 2026)
Hello everyone!
Welcome to P6’s school page. We are so excited to be back and we are looking forward to a fantastic year ahead. Here is what we have planned for Block 1:
- Topic:
Our topic this block is “The Scottish Wars of Independence”. We will be discussing the importance of the events, key figures and key places, researching uniform, amour and weapons. We will be comparing our lives to theirs and thinking about how they and we deal with conflict.
We will also be diving into the Winter Olympics and looking at that through a STEM lens.
Before we begin our Social Studies topic, we will be doing a mini-topic on Neurodiversity. We will be reading the novel. “Can you see me?” by Libby Scott about the life of a young girl with autism who is starting high school and all the ups and downs that go with it.
We will be linking this topic to the world of work, looking at our own skills and the skills and successes of many other neurodivergent people. We will also be looking at the effect and influence of social Media, peer pressure and relationships.
- Numeracy & Maths:
- Continue with four operations (+-/x)
- Place Value – Fractions/Decimals/Percentages
- Measure – Standard/Non-Standard measurements, converting, perimeter, area, volume
- Co-ordinates, grid references, using a compass and looking at scale.
- Literacy:
Our class novel this block is ‘Light on Dumyat’. This is an adventure novel by Rennie McOwan that follows Gavin, an English boy who unexpectedly spends his summer holiday with his aunt and uncle in the remote Scottish hills. There, he meets three siblings who are skilled in outdoor survival and engage in a series of thrilling adventures. The story unfolds as they encounter a criminal gang intent on stealing his uncle’s silver, leading them to use their skills and imagination to protect their home and foil the criminals. The novel is rich in Scottish culture and wilderness, offering lessons in bushcraft and survival while maintaining a thrilling narrative that appeals to young readers.
We will also have group readers which we will take home each week to read. Please ensure these are always in schoolbags as we need them to facilitate reading groups each day, particularly on a Wednesday.
We are also very lucky to have a slot in our new and improved school library, where we can read for enjoyment.
