P5a and Mrs Waddell

Block One (August – December 2025)

It’s good to have everyone back for the start of the new school year. The children have settled in well and have enjoyed rekindling friendships and making new friends.

We have lots planned for Block 1. Here are a few of the things we have already started learning about, or will be looking at, between now and Christmas.

Class Charter

We have talked about the school values and what it means to be Safe, Ready and Respectful. We used the some of the rights from The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and considered how these should apply in school. We have all agreed on how we can work together to make our class a place where everyone is ready to learn, somewhere we all feel safe and know how to keep ourselves safe and how to be respectful of each other and their property.

Topic

Our topic for this term is the Polar Regions. We are looking at where they are, learning about the people who live or visit, the animals and climate. We are also learning about the Polar Expeditions led by Captain Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton.

Numeracy and Maths

The topics we are aiming to cover this term are:

  • Place value
  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • 2D and 3D shape
  • Position and movement

Literacy

In literacy we will continue to build upon work done in previous years, learning more about sentence structure and using vcop to enhance writing.

In writing we will be using our topic as a stimulus and creating, amongst other things:

  • Stories
  • letters
  • posters
  • poems

In talking and listening we are focusing on listening skills and will be getting lots of practise at taking turns to speak in small group or class situations.

In reading, we will be focusing on some of the key literature circle roles such as summariser, predictor and illustrator. We have already started this by looking at the role of word wizard.

Health and Wellbeing

As part of our health and wellbeing learning we will be covering Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood (RSHP). This term we will be covering the following topics:

Friends and friendship

My body

A fair and equal life for boys and girls

More information on these topics can be found at: Second Level – RSHP

We will also be learning about friendships, feelings and about personal space.

PE is on a Monday and children should wear their PE clothes to school then.

In PE we will be practising ball skills, looking at passing, catching and hitting the ball with increasing accuracy and we will be using these skills in a variety of games.

We will also be participating in fitness activities and team games.

Reading books will be sent on a Friday and should be returned on a Monday ready to undertake reading groups. Please spend some time going over your child’s reading with them and ensure the books are returned to school on time.

If your child would like to complete some additional homework to help further their learning and understanding, please have a look at the list of websites below which you may find useful.
