Block Three (April – June)
Hello, and welcome to the class page for Primary 2! The class teacher is Miss Ramsay. Mrs Daly teaches the class on a Wednesday afternoon.
Health and wellbeing
The topics that we will be covering during this block for Health and Wellbeing are;
- Friends/friendships
- Looking after plants and animals.
- My family
These topics are part of the first level learning outlined by RSHP (Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood).
We discuss our school values daily – Safe, Ready and Respectful, and the children have been identifying what these different values look like in school/out of school. We are continuing to work on these this term.
Our gym day is a Thursday. This term we will be focusing on fitness and athletics. As part of this, we will also be learning about the ways that we can keep our bodies and minds healthy.
Literacy
In literacy this term we will be focusing on:
- Continuing to read and write tricky words.
- Spelling of high frequency words.
- Blending and segmenting, to help with reading and writing.
- Punctuation – question marks, exclamation marks, commas, speech marks and apostrophes.
- Nouns, adjectives, verbs and conjunctions. We are continuing to develop our knowledge of these through using them within our writing.
- Presentation of writing – using titles, headings and drawings.
- Facts and opinions
- Creating texts for different purposes – fact files and posters
- Alphabetical order and dictionary work.
We use literature circles to support our reading lessons. The children read their reading books twice a week in school. We are currently focusing on the following literature circle skills:
- Illustrator
- Predictor
- Word Wizard
- Summariser
Homework
Homework is given out every Friday and should be completed by the following Wednesday. Children are provided with a reading book, and a word wall of common words to practise. Please ensure that your child brings their homework folder into school every day as we use these throughout the week.
Numeracy and Maths
In numeracy this term we will be focusing on:
- Skip counting
- Continuing to work on addition and subtraction with numbers to 10, 20, 100 and beyond.
- Fractions
- Data handling
- Multiplication and division
- Patterns and relationships
- Position and movement
We use practical resources and strategies to help us in numeracy. The children also use their maths workbooks to support their progression in numeracy and mathematics.
To further develop our numeracy skills, we also use Sumdog, which can be accessed at home, as well as in school. Please let me know if you do not have your child’s login details for Sumdog, and I can pass these on to you.
Science
This term we will be conducting some experiments, exploring various aspects of science. Our science lessons will link to other aspects of the curriculum, such as numeracy, geography, and social studies. Our lessons will cover:
- Properties of materials – waterproof/absorbent, dissolvable materials
- Processes of the planet – states of water, the water cycle
- Biodiversity and interdependence – living/non-living things, food chains, looking after plants
We will be discussing the practical aspects of experiments, such as predictions, fair tests, and materials. The children are very enthusiastic about our upcoming science lessons.
Topic
Our topic for this term is Under the Sea.
We have started by creating a mind map of the things that we already know about this topic, and the things that we would like to find out. The children have shown a particular interest in sea creatures, and this will form part of the focus for our topic. We will also be learning about the environment, sustainability, and ways that we can help to solve ocean pollution. The children shared lots of ideas and are always excited about our class topics.
