Learning Overview for Primary 7b

 

Literacy

WRITING:

Our focus this term will be personal writing which will include responses to experiences we have had/going to have.  We will also be writing reports around our scientific experiments within our topic. In response to our class novels we will be writing poetry and exploring different genres of imaginative writing.

 

SPELLING:

We will continue to focus on ensuring we are using taught spelling rules consistently to enable us to spell most words correctly.

We will also be learning specialist vocabulary linked to other areas of the curriculum such as the names of the bones in the body.

 

READING:

We will be developing reading fluency with our group texts and looking in detail at figurative language, author techniques, answering questions, themes and poetry through one of our class novels; The Final Year by Matt Goodfellow.  As part of the transition to Queen Anne the literacy department have asked primary 7 classes to read The Wrong Shoes by Tom Percival.  Teachers from Queen Anne will support us with a range of lessons that explore the key themes of resilience and friendship.

 

LISTENING & TALKING:

The Primary 7 play will provide the children the opportunity to develop talking to an audience.  They will listen to respond at appropriate times and develop their dialogue skills.  Within reading targets, we will be using a literacy circle approach for group reading activities.  This will include sharing opinions and asking other’s questions.

Numeracy and Mathematics

NUMERACY:

The focus of our numeracy this term will be completing the targets around Fractions, decimals and percentages. Making connections between the 3 concepts which will include finding and simplifying fractions to convert into decimal numbers and percentages.  Term 4 will also give us the opportunity to strengthen our calculating skills around the 4 operations and apply our understanding of place value, rounding and answering word problems in real life contexts.

 

MATHEMATICS:

Within the area of mathematics, we will be using the context of our science topic ‘Our Body’ to collect, interpret and analyse data Data alongside producing a range of diagrams, charts and tables.

We will also be exploring the impact of mathematics on the world in which we live in.  Identifying all the ways in which mathematics supported the inventions of medicines, space travel and everyday technology.

We will be looking to convert a range of measurements such as kilometeres to centimetres or millimetres, calculating area and using formulas to calculate areas of irregular shapes.

 

 

 

 Health and Wellbeing

P.E

Health: We will be preparing for sports day events by working on athletic and fitness targets.  This will also tie in with our topic by understanding the physical benefits of keeping fit and healthy.

 

 

Expressive Arts

 

Drama – We will be working towards putting on our Primary 7 performance of the play ‘School of Pop’.  The children will audition and be given roles that they will develop over the term.  They will learn to be able to follow written and verbal stage direction and perform on a stage.

 

 

 

 

Our Topic(s) will be about…

Our Body – Our science focussed topic will look at investigating some of the body systems and identify some ways to maintain our health and wellbeing.  We will be looking at the function and structure of our sensory organs to understand how our body reacts to certain stimuli.

This topic will also look at characteristics that are inherited and those that aren’t.  We will use a range of sources and experiments to increase our knowledge and understanding of this topic.

HOMEWORK: Our homework tasks this term will continue to be a range of short activities on the See-Saw app.  These activities will be uploaded on a Wednesday and ideally completed by the following Monday.  The activities will vary depending on the learning within class that week.  As well as this, the children will have their group reading book to read at home.  As we have our Primary 7 play this term (further details to follow) we would like the children to practise their lines and song lyrics at home.  The entire production is on the Showbie app on the IPADS.
