Term 4 – Learning Overview for Primary 3B

LITERACY

WRITING:

This term we will be focusing on creative writing. Pupils will develop the characters, settings and storylines in their own imaginative stories. This will link to our ‘Commonwealth Super Athletes’ topic as the heroes in their stories will have super human abilities.  They will learn to divide their stories into logical paragraphs and incorporate interesting vocabulary, as well as a variety of conjunctions (and, so, but, because), sentence openers, and punctuation. Some pupils may progress to adding dialogue to their stories and learn how to use speech marks. We will work on self-assessment skills so that they can assess their own writing in order to identify next steps to improve their stories throughout the term.

READING:

To inspire pupils to use their imagination to write their own stories, this term our class novels will be from the ‘Flying Fergus’ series by Sir Chris Hoy. This will help them to understand the development of characters and settings as well as the format of adventure stories. Using both the Workshop for Literacy approach and Blooms Questions, pupils will learn how to answer literal and inferential questions about texts – our class novels, their reading books for homework, and books selected from the school library.

We will continue to visit the school library every week to select books to read for enjoyment, and we will also incorporate short periods of silent reading throughout the week. Pupils will be encouraged to find enjoyment in reading while quietly relaxing with their classmates. Reading books will be sent home for homework for pupils to continue practising their reading aloud skills, working on projecting their voices and reading with expression to bring the characters and stories to life.

LISTENING & TALKING:

Talking and listening skills are practised daily in all areas of the curriculum. In order to encourage teamwork skills, this term children will be allocated a different partner each week to work together to research a Scottish Commonwealth athlete.  We will analyse which partnerships are most successful to determine what makes a good partner, identifying the importance of developing the meta-skills of communicating and collaborating.

NUMERACY AND MATHEMATICS

MATHEMATICS:

Fractions

The children will extend their multiplication and division skills from last term to learn about fractions. Through practical activities we will investigate how an item or a number of items can be shared equally and learn to record simple fractions and describe them using the appropriate mathematical vocabulary. We will extend this to practise placing fractions on a number line to compare their size, and begin to develop an understanding of fractions which are equivalent.

Data Analysis

Pupils will learn to collect, interpret and display information in tables and graphs. During MUGA and Gym time when we will be practising athletics skills, they will learn to gather and sort data, then display and clearly label their data using a variety of different methods, including the use of digital technologies.

NUMERACY:

This term we will be revising the basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with a focus on patterns and equations. Pupils will practise describing number patterns, then create and continue repeating patterns involving numbers as well as shapes, pictures and symbols. They will learn to see equations as a way of balancing sums on either side of the equals sign and will learn to use the = ¹ < and > symbols correctly.

All of the children’s learning will be through practical resources, whiteboard recording and games, as well as some written textbook work to consolidate their knowledge and understanding.  ‘Sumdog’ challenges and games on websites such as ‘Topmarks’ can be used in school or at home to help the children’s mental maths strategies.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

PE – Indoor & Outdoor

In the run up to Sports Day and to link with our Commonwealth Super Athletes topic, in both outdoor and indoor PE sessions this term we will focus on athletics. This will give us the ideal opportunity to collect data which can then be used in Data Analysis sessions in the classroom. Children will work in small groups to recognise the value of good teamwork skills and cooperation with others.

Health

This term we will continue to focus on kindness and build up our Kindness display in the classroom. The children will continue to think about how to maintain their own mental health by recording their 5 Ways to Wellbeing.   Later in the term we will have a series of lessons based around the Scottish government programme RSHP.  This is a website that has age appropriate lessons around relationships, sexual health and parenthood.  You can access all of the content that will be shared with the class from the following link:

TOPIC

Our Commonwealth Super Athletes

To link with the Commonwealth Games coming to Glasgow in the Summer this year, our topic will be all about the heroes of the team representing Scotland.

We will learn about the functions of the human body and find out what it takes to become an elite athlete. We will research some of the big names taking part in the 2026 games and discuss the importance of dedication and practice to be the best.

The children will develop their ICT skills by researching the athletes and improve their literacy and presentation skills as they create a mini fact book about each athlete.

This topic covers a variety of science, health and wellbeing, social science, ICT and literacy targets.
