We will be learning to find, select and sort information from a variety of sources.

We will be learning to read and highlight the key points and key words for our own notes, using skimming and scanning. We will then be able to use these notes to create our own texts.

We will be looking at inference and using evidence to support our ideas.

Our class novel will be The Explorer and we will use this to link our IDL, but also to teach literacy skills and to introduce VIPERS to enhance their comprehension.

Children are also in set reading groups where they will complete tasks based on the skills taught.

We will be working on addition and subtraction strategies. We will also be using our problem-solving skills to solve multistep problems.

We will be extending our understanding of multiplication and division into term 2, linking this to times tables and mental recall. We will be focusing on improving our mental recall and times tables through a variety of interactive games and using Big Maths, Beat That.

Within our measurement topic we will be measuring the area, volume and perimeter of shapes. We will use a range of different scales and appropriate measuring devices to strengthen our understanding.

We will be learning about shape, properties, grid coordinates and bearings. Area and perimeter alongside scale and map reading skills. We will also be showing our understanding of symmetry through reflection and translation.

Linking to IDL we will introduce data handling outcomes, linking to climate and weather.

In art, we will be looking at texture and media, linking work to layers of Rainforest and to artists such as Henri Rousseau.

Music:

We are going to look in to using the Charanga Resource this term.

We will link music through our IDL topic by creating rainforest soundscapes using instruments and also responding to music and emotions with classical music.

Drama:

Role play, hot seating and freeze frames tied to character dilemmas and environmental issues.

Dance:

Scottish Country Dancing

We will be learning to organise and take notes logically under different headings and layouts and acknowledge sources of where our information came from. Focus on evaluating source reliability.

We will be writing for various purposes including letters, newspapers and reports, instructional, diaries and persuasive techniques.

We are looking to develop confidence in using different types of punctuation and connectives in our writing.

Spelling:

We will continue to learn new spelling rules and patterns each week which will help us spell more difficult words.

We will be learning specialist words linked to our topic and will be learning to check and edit our writing appropriately.

We will be focussing on fitness, football, hockey and dance this term.

Health:

We will be focusing on kindness, friendship and respect. We will learn the language of emotions and how to express ourselves in a positive manner.

We will be using Emotion Works and Treehouse resource to support us in this.
