Learning Overview for Primary 6

Literacy

WRITING:

We will be learning to create texts for different purposes including factual writing based on our topic. We will be learning to organise and take notes logically under different headings and layouts and acknowledge sources of where our information came from. We will be writing for various purposes including reports and using persuasive techniques. We are looking to develop confidence in using different types of punctuation and connectives in our writing.

SPELLING & PHONICS:

We will continue to learn new spelling rules and patterns each week which will help us spell more difficult words. We will be learning specialist words linked to our topic and will learning to check and edit our writing appropriately.

READING:

We will be learning to find, select and sort information from a variety of sources. We will be learning to read and highlight the key points and key words for our own notes. We will then be able to use these notes to create our own texts. We will be looking at inference and using evidence to support our ideas.

LISTENING & TALKING:

We will be learning to listen or watch and discuss the main ideas. Our main focus this term is on using the suitable vocabulary for our audience.

Numeracy and Mathematics

NUMERACY:

We will be focusing on place value, ordering, rounding and deepening our understanding of number – applying this to larger numbers and within word problems.

 

We will be working on addition and subtraction strategies. We are focusing on improving our mental recall and times tables through a variety of fun, interactive games and using Big Maths, Beat That. We will also be using our problem-solving skills to solve multistep problems.

 

MATHEMATICS:

Within our measurement topic we will be measuring the area, volume and perimeter of shapes. We will use a range of different scales and appropriate measuring devices to strengthen our understanding.

 

We will be learning about the nets of 3D shapes and also the circumference, diameter and radius of a circle. We will also be showing our understanding of symmetry through reflection and translation.

 

 Health and Wellbeing

Our P.E days are Mondays (indoor) and Thursdays (MUGA).

We will be focussing on fitness, basketball, football and hockey this term.

 

Health:

We will be focusing on kindness, friendship and respect. We will learn the language of emotions and how to express ourselves in a positive manner. We will be using Emotion Works and Treehouse resource to support us in this.

Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL)

OUR PROJECT IS THE TITANIC:

We will be learning to use primary and secondary sources to research events in the past. We will be learning to compare and contrast different time periods and events in the past and present. We will discuss how events in the past impact life today.
