Teacher – Mr Richardson

Term 3 January to April

Learning Overview for Primary 5/6

Literacy

WRITING:

In both short and extended texts, we will be practising varying the length of our sentences. We will use a range of connectives to help with creating these.

We will also continue to work on our punctuation and the structure of our writing with a focus on paragraphs.

SPELLING:

We are working on a range of spelling rules to change words from singular to plural and are developing our ability to apply these rules consistently in our written work.

We will begin to develop our understanding of homophones, homonyms, antonyms and synonyms.

READING:

We are building on our ability to apply a range of reading skills and strategies to read and understand texts such as skimming and scanning, predicting and summarising.

LISTENING & TALKING:

We are using Newsround and our class novel as the basis of class discussions, sharing opinions and understanding alternative opinions. This helps us develop our understanding of the topic through our peer discussions.

Numeracy and Mathematics

NUMERACY:

Our main focus will be on fractions and decimals, using our knowledge of the times tables and our multiplication/division strategies to identify fractions of whole numbers. We will also cover equivalent and simplified fractions.

We will cover money through our work on decimals.

We will be looking at multiples & factors and doubling and halving to make connections in our times tables.

MATHEMATICS:

We will cover time using 12 and 24-hour clocks, durations of time linked to journeys and activities, and interpreting simple timetables.

We will look at co-ordinates and revisit angles to tie in with direction and movement.
