WRITING:

Primary 4 will focus on the tools for writing in T1&2. We are learning to correctly punctuate our sentences. All of us will use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. Most of us will use exclamation and question marks. Some of us will use commas and speech marks. Our focus for writing will be informational based on our topic and personal writing, such as diary entries and postcards.

SPELLING & PHONICS:

We are learning how to correctly spell common words. We are also learning the rules for magic ‘e’ and adding ‘ing’ to a root word.

READING:

In term one we will learn about the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts. We will also talk about why the front cover, blurb and author help us choose books. Everyone will be working on tricky words and some of us will use word walls to help secure our sight recognition. We will also focus on comprehension through our individual and class story books.

LISTENING & TALKING:

Our main focus over term one and two will be making predictions about stories and responding to different texts. This will be through asking questions and giving opinions about what we have just watched or listened to.

NUMERACY:

Our main focus during term one will be place value (the value of each digit represented into hundreds, tens and ones). Some of us will count to 10, 000 and beyond. Most of us will keep practising our understanding of numbers to 1000. All of us will secure our skip counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Once we have mastered our place value skills we will learn different strategies for addition and subtraction. Everyone will learn about estimation and rounding.

MATHEMATICS:

During term one we will be learning about the properties of 2D and 3D shape. Following this we will learn about co-ordinates and how to use maps to find places of interest.

P.E: Our PE days are every Tuesday. Mrs Chalmers will teach PE every second Monday which everybody loves! Miss Stevenson will teach us every Tuesday and our focus will be fitness and yoga. We will practice building our stamina and strength through fun activities.

Health: We will be learning about being a Rights Respecting school and how every child has the right to be heard, be safe and play. We will also learn about the names of different emotions and ways to manage them.

Outdoor Learning: We will enjoy maths, literacy and mindfulness activities in the quad.

OUR FIRST PROJECT IS:

Our Wonderful World. We will learn about the 7 different continents and some of the different counties within in them. We will use ICT to help us research capital cities. We will also learn about what a landmark is and research some famous ones. Everyone will contribute to a class book about our learning. We will ask and answer different questions that interest us around this topic.

OUR SECOND PROJECT IS:

We will extend our Wonderful World topic into term 2 and then start to look at how Christmas is celebrated around the world. We will also start to rehearse for the Nativity performance.
