Teacher – Miss Dalzell
Term 3
LITERACY
WRITING:
Using our farm to fork topic for the context, we will be using the structure of ‘See, Think, Wonder’ to develop sentence structure. The children will also learn the difference between fact and opinion and will be encouraged to write personal accounts that include their thoughts and opinions.
SPELLING & PHONICS:
The children will continue to learn specific phonic and spelling patterns within our carousel or group activities. Children will be encouraged to use these sounds for writing and reading more independently.
READING: This term we will use our farm to fork topic to develop our reading skills. We will read a variety of picture books within a farm context. Using our ‘Blooms Bear’ approach to comprehension, the children will develop skills to ask and answer questions that have a higher thinking challenge. Children will continue to have regular visits to the school library so that pupils can learn to recognise books that they can enjoy reading. The children will also continue to have group and individual reading books that they can bring home. These texts allow them to develop their reading aloud skills, working on expression and understanding punctuation.
LISTENING & TALKING:
Talking and listening skills are practised daily in all areas of the curriculum. Our focus this term is to communicate our thoughts and opinions to others in the class or group. The children will be encouraged to listen to a range of texts and videos that provide information (farming information for example) and use what they heard to sequence and show their understanding. The children will also be encouraged to communicate clearly to express opinions and give reasons for those thoughts. |
NUMERACY AND MATHEMATICS
NUMERACY:
This term our focus for numeracy will be multiplication and division. We will continue to develop the children’s number bonds and place value of numbers within 100/1000 but develop their understanding of multiplication and how it relates to addition (repeated addition). We will encourage the children to learn to count in patterns of 2’s, 3’s, 5’s and 10’s to help recall of tables for those children that have a sound grasp of the concept. All of the children’s learning will be through practical resources, whiteboard recording and games as well as some written work to consolidate their knowledge and understanding. ‘Sumdog’ challenges and games on websites such as ‘Topmarks’ can be used in school or home to help the children’s mental math strategies.
MATHEMATICS:
As often as is possible, we will link our maths teaching to the context of our topic ‘Farm to Fork’ to highlight the relevance of number and maths in the real world. Money The children will investigate how we pay for everyday objects by learning about uk coins and notes. We will look at buying farm products and calculating change.
Chance and Uncertainty The children will develop their understanding of probability and explore chance using numerical representation such as a 1 in 6 chance of rolling a 6 on a dice.
Maths and its impact on the world This area of maths will be relevant to our topic in order to explore how money was originally used to pay for goods that people wanted to buy instead of just trading like for like. We will be looking at ways in which numbers and maths are used to help us in our everyday lives.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
Outdoor PE The class will continue to have fortnightly PE sessions, working on a variety of skills through different sports and challenges. They will work in small groups to recognise the value of good teamwork skills and cooperation with others. Indoor PE The class will be developing their understanding and knowledge of fitness through various games and activities that provide challenge. We will learn about stamina and how this impacts our health and fitness. We will also learn to describe reasons why people participate in physical activity. Health Through our Farm to Fork topic, we will discuss the journey of food and have a go at preparing some nutritious snacks. The class will continue to have fortnightly lessons on children’s rights as part of our Rights Respecting School accreditation. As the school year progresses, we will focus on the importance of kindness in the classroom and in the playground, appreciating how our words and actions can impact on others. |
TOPIC
Farm to Fork We will investigate the different types of farms found in Fife (and beyond) and explore the variety of food produced in our local area. We will study how crops are grown and harvested and learn to recognise the importance of animals reared in Fife to provide us with dairy products, eggs and meat. This topic will give pupils a greater appreciation of the importance of farming in Fife and a better understanding of the journey food takes to arrive on our plates.
