Learning Overview for Primary 4b
Literacy
WRITING:
Primary 4 will focus on the tools for writing in T1&2.
We are learning to correctly punctuate our
sentences. All of us will use capital letters, finger
spaces and full stops. Most of us will use
exclamation and question marks. Some of us will use
commas and speech marks. We will be developing
our skills in writing information texts. Everyone will
learn how to take notes and most learners will use
paragraphs, headings and subheadings to organise
their writing.
SPELLING & PHONICS:
We are learning how to correctly spell common
words. We are continuing to learn the rules for
magic ‘e’ and applying a new sound pattern or
spelling rule each week. All children will focus on a
different spelling pattern or rule, building their
knowledge and confidence as they progress.
READING:
We will use our class novel as the basis for
developing our reading skills. We will share and
discuss our opinions about the story, make
predictions about what might happen next and use
context clues to help us understand what we are
reading. We will also explore and learn new
vocabulary to help us develop our understanding of
the text and become confident, enthusiastic readers.
LISTENING & TALKING:
Our focus over T1&2 will be listening for
information. We will listen carefully to others and
different types of texts, find important information,
ask questions and use what we learn to share ideas,
complete fact files and build our understanding.
Numeracy and Mathematics
NUMERACY:
Our main focus during term one will be place value (the
value of each digit represented into hundreds, tens and
ones). Some of us will count to 10, 000 and beyond.
Most of us will keep practising our understanding of
numbers to 1000. All of us will secure our skip counting
in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Once we have mastered our place
value skills we will learn different strategies for
addition and subtraction. Everyone will learn about
estimation and rounding.
MATHEMATICS:
During T1 we will be learning about the properties of
2D and 3D shapes. Everyone will learn how to identify
a range of 2D and 3D shapes, most of us will identify 2D
properties by sides and corners, some of us will identify
3d shapes by faces, edges and vertices. All of us will
describe 3D properties to help us recognise and
compare shapes in the world around us.
Following this we will learn about symmetry, patterns
and co-ordinates.

Health and Wellbeing
P.E: Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. We
have indoor PE with Mrs Reekie every Thursday. The
focus in T1 will be ball skills and in T2 will be fitness.
Miss Close will do outdoor PE every second Tuesday
and focus on different team games.
Health: We will be learning about being a Rights
Respecting school and how every child has the right
to be heard, be safe and to learn. We will focus on
collaborative learning and team-building skills. In
addition, we will learn about the names of different
emotions and ways to manage them.
Outdoor Learning:We will enjoy maths, health and
wellbeing and mindfulness activities in the quad.
Our Topic will be about…..
OUR FIRST PROJECT IS: We will explore the amazing
human body and learn about its different systems,
including the skeleton, organs, digestion and
circulation. We will investigate how our bodies work,
how to stay healthy and use scientific skills to ask
questions, carry out investigations and share our
learning through literacy and numeracy tasks.
OUR SECOND PROJECT IS:We will learn how
Christmas is celebrated in different countries, explore
traditions, food and customs, compare similarities and
differences, and share our learning through
discussions, research and creative activities.
