Learning Overview for Primary 6

 

Literacy

WRITING:

This term we will continue to complete 15-minute writing challenges. Our focus this term will be on personal writing and being able to express our emotions an opinions with supporting detail. We will be learning to share experiences, expressing what they made us think or feel. We will continue to practise the tools for writing, including punctuation, grammar and handwriting.

 

SPELLING & PHONICS: We will continue learn new spelling rules and patterns each week which will help us spell more difficult words. We will be learning specialist words linked to our topic and will learning to check and edit our writing appropriately.

 

READING: Our class novel this term will be ‘Wonder’ by R.J Palacio. We will be considering the purpose and main idea to the text and develop informed views of the text looking at fact and opinion. We will continue to look for clues and evidence in the text to back up our responses and complete comprehension and close reading activities. To make links between the novel and real experiences and link to our health and wellbeing discussions.

 

LISTENING & TALKING: We will continue to regularly select and create texts of choice and share them in different ways. There will be opportunities for listening and talking through our health and wellbeing discussions this term as well as opportunities for a personal presentation at the end of term.

 

Numeracy and Mathematics

 

NUMERACY: We will start the term off by completing our division topic started last term. We will then move onto decimals, fractions and percentages and look at the link between them and how we can use them in different ways. We will also have the opportunity to develop our problem-solving skills further by applying strategies to real world scenarios.

 

MATHEMATICS:

In maths, we will be looking at measurement. Then we will move onto looking at pattern, and data handling. In data handling we will be looking at different ways to interpret data using different types of graphs. We will also introduce scale.

 Health and Wellbeing

Our PE days will now be on a Monday and Wednesday.

In PE we will be covering athletics, football and basketball. Sports Day will be on Thursday 6th of June.

 

Health:

We will be continuing to focus on kindness, friendship and respect. We will continue to express ourselves in a positive manner. We will also cover the primary 6 targets following the National Resource for Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood (RSHP) education for children and young people.

Our Topic will be about…

BODY SYSTEMS AND CELLS

 

We will explore the structure and function of sensory organs. We will investigate the role of micro-organisms in producing and breaking down materials. We will investigate lifecycles of plants and animals. We will explore characteristics offspring inherit and distinguish between inherited and non-inherited characteristics.
