Literacy

WRITING:

This term Primary 1 children will be learning to put words together in order to write sentences. They will be learning about capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.

All P1 and P2 children will be learning about different careers and skills gaining information from a range of sources through our “The World of Work” topic.

SPELLING & PHONICS:

P1 Jolly Phonics

Children will continue to learn diagraph blends (where two sounds join together to make one new sound). They will use these sounds when making CVCC words.

P2 Spelling

Children will continue to focus on diagraph blends such as sp, sl and st as this will help them with accuracy of spelling and fluency when reading and decoding.

Some children will learn about vowels and consonants.

Numeracy and Mathematics

NUMERACY:

Primary 1 children will continue to learn about number patterns looking at doubles. They will begin to explore ideas of multiplication by creating sets and groups of different objects. Children will be learning about division by sharing items into groups that are equal.

Children will be encouraged to use their number knowledge to answer words problems and show their thinking.

In primary 2 children will be learning about odd and even numbers and how to identify them. Children will also be learning number words.

Children will be learning about multiplication and division by concentrating on counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. They will use a variety of concrete materials to make arrays, groups and sets to understand these concepts.

All children will be learning about chance and uncertainty and will be encouraged to use a range of mathematical language when assessing likelihood within scenarios.
