P2/3

Teacher – Miss Dalzell/ Miss Kelly

Term 3 – Learning Overview for Primary 2/3

LITERACY

WRITING:

We will continue to look at structuring our sentences with the appropriate punctuation. Last term we also looked at different openers so will use these as well as learning about different connectives.

Linking to our topic we will learn and take notes of different space facts. We will use this to make a fact file about the different planets.

SPELLING & PHONICS:

We will continue to revisit some of the more challenging phonics sounds and digraphs from last year to support accurate spelling of tricky words. Children can then apply their knowledge of these sounds to strengthen both their reading and writing. In their spelling/phonics groups, they will focus on weekly target sounds, learning spelling patterns and rules that help to support their independent writing skills.

READING:

We will learn how to identify verbs in a sentence. We will also look at recognising alliteration in text.

Linked to our topic we will be learning to understand the difference between fact and opinion.

LISTENING & TALKING:

Children will continue to develop their listening skills, learning to listen carefully for key information. They will be encouraged to share their ideas confidently and support them by explaining their reasoning. Opportunities will also be provided to strengthen their ability to talk in front of an audience, as well as to ask and answer questions clearly and thoughtfully.

MODERN LANGUAGES:

We will use songs and a range of fun, interactive resources to help build our understanding of the French language. We will also embed French into our everyday classroom routines, such as talking about the weather, the date, and following classroom instructions as well as making relevant links between the language and our space topic.

NUMERACY AND MATHEMATICS

NUMERACY:

Squares: Learning to counting to 1000 as well as looking at all multiplication tables. We will also cover division.

Triangles: Learning to count to 100 in 10’s, 2’s and 5’s. We will also be learning how to partition numbers into tens and ones.

Circles: Learning about numbers to 100. We will be looking at addition and subtraction strategies to and from 20.

Rectangles: Working on numbers to 50. We will be learning addition and subtraction strategies to and from 20.

MATHEMATICS:

Time:

Children will develop their understanding of time by recognising the numerals on an analogue clock and linking time to their daily routines. They will also use calendars and weekly planners to help organise and sequence events, developing an awareness of days, weeks and the passage of time.

Measure:

We will explore different ways to measure objects, such as length and weight, using simple equipment. We will compare and talk about our measurements, building confidence through practical, hands-on activities.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Indoor PE

In PE, children will develop key physical skills such as hand-eye coordination, balance and control through a range of ball skills activities. They will also focus on controlling their bodies and performing safe, purposeful movements during gymnastics, helping to build strength, confidence and spatial awareness.

Health

We will be focusing on taking care of each other and our own mental health. We will learn how to use personal coping skills and strategies for difficult time.

TOPIC

Our Topic is called Our Planet. We will be looking at what our planet consists of as well as our planet’s position in spaces. We will be able to describe how the sun, moon and earth create a pattern of movement to create days, weeks and months.
