Teacher – Mrs Robins/Miss Dalzell
The Children in P1a and P1b are working across three play-based classroom settings and embracing the opportunities to learn through play each day. Mrs Smart, Mrs Robbins and Miss Dalzell are working with the children during their play and all adults are involved in observing the children’s play and planning next steps. All children will also work in their own classrooms with their class teacher at the “Teaching Table” for focussed, targeted learning suited to their individual learning needs.

| Literacy
WRITING: P1 – Children will be using “Foundations for Writing” programme to add details to their pictures before “talking a story”. We will be working on forming all letters in their name correctly and to size. Finally children will be working on writing CVC words using decoding skills and using these skills to write labels and lists. SPELLING & PHONICS: Jolly Phonics P1 – Children will be learning to recognise and form all initial sounds, using these within their writing and play. READING: In primary 1 the children will initial focus on prewriting skills such as visual discrimination and tracking words from left to right, blend the initial sounds covered in terms 1 and 2 and practise re-telling stories they have heard or seen. Together we will be using the “Workshop for Literacy” to use books as a stimulus for all areas of literacy. We will retell, sequence and finish stories as part of this. All children will be introduced to word walls for the “Story World” reading scheme. LISTENING & TALKING: In primary 1, the focus for talking and listening is to listen and respond to instructions, to take turns in talking and listening to each other and joining in with songs and rhymes.

Numeracy and Mathematics
NUMERACY: P1 – Number recognition and formation for 0-20 using the Communication for All number rhymes. Number Formation Rhyme Cards (communication4all.co.uk) MATHEMATICS: Data Handling We will be learning to gather, sort and read different types of Data through our “Under the Sea” topic and during play. Measure We will be focusing on using the vocabulary for measuring. Thinking about the different equipment and ways that we can measure capacity, length, and weight. Time We will be learning about the order of the days, months and seasons through songs and rhymes. P1 children will be reading analogue and digital clocks for o’clock times. Shape and Pattern Children will learn to recognise 2D and 3D shapes. They will be able to use these to create a pattern which will include colours.
We will use a variety of technology to help us explore these topics. Learning games can help children to reinforce learning during play.

| Health and Wellbeing
P.E The children will learn about different aspects of health, including physical and emotional health both inside and in the outdoors. We will have class gym every second Monday with Miss Close and every Wednesday with class teacher and will focus on the following: Term 1 – Spacial awareness, different ways to move safely, listening for instructions Term 2 – Ball skills Health: We will be exploring safety, friendships and understanding our feelings using resources such as Emotion Works, RSHP, Kitbag and Treehouse – Tree of Knowledge. |
